I disagree. If an even playing field is what is sought then making that distinction is important in this instance.

She's not the greatest tennis player of all time because she would be beaten by a lot of male players. The old GOAT arguments focus on in their prime; Fed in his prime would beat her.

So talking generally, she's a great tennis player. Talking more specifically, she's the greatest female tennis player of all time, to me shows more respect to her ability. No female ever would beat her. Ever.

When talking AFL, it wouldn't be disrespectful to Wayne Carey to say he's the greatest North Melbourne player of all time, even though he's got claims to be the greatest AFL player ever. I know it's a long pallallel but the premise of respect is the same.

Getting drawn into the mechanics of who would beat who in a match and where Serena would be ranked in the Men's game isn't the point.

Men's tennis exists on its own.
Women's tennis exists on its own.

Therefore the achievements and merits of their participants should be measured on the own terms of each sport.

North Melbourne as a football club doesn't exist independently from the AFL, they don't play under a different set of rules with a different physical biology.

I suspect I'm ramming my overly politically correct head into a metaphorical brick wall by continuing to talk about this but why do we need to say 'the greatest female x'. We are all well aware of Serena Williams gender surely? We know form watching her for nearly two decades she is a female who competes against other females. The gender distinction is only made as a way of re-enforcing male superiority, its shorthand for saying 'but if she ever did face a man she'd get crushed straights'.

Not sure I actually saw any article calling McEnroe sexist for his comments though? Anyone got a link?
Do a google search for "McEnroe Sexist" you'll find plenty. False outrage over things like this does a disservice to the broader battle against legitimate sexism.

Ah true. I had another look, a few more hits than when I looked previously. Pretty much clickbait sites though.

CP3 is going to be traded to Houston. That'll be fun.

I'm in the minority that think this'll work well. Both can play off the ball, but the biggest bonus is Houston being able to stagger minutes so one of them is on the court at all times (or as close to as possible).

It's not just these 2 playing together. It's one of them handling the ball almost every rockets possession.

Can't wait to see what their next move is.

I'd say this almost certainly means Griffin to Boston. Plus they're gunning for Hayward and George..

I reckon Melo will be bought out, too. Houston will go for another big name.

Boston are definitely gunning for Hayward to also make the George domino fall. They wouldn't be able to fit those two guys and griffin under the cap though.

I don't buy into the 'only one ball' philosophy either. No reason it can't work. Harden was absolutely stuffed in some last quarters this year so having Chris Paul sharing the load will be a massive help. He will be so fun to watch in the D'Antoni system.

Morey is a great GM. Doesn't always work out but he somehow finds a way to get stars on his roster.

Which PG do our resident wolves fans want to chase with Rubio out the door??

Surely they swing hard for Lowry.

Man they're building an exciting squad.
Sounds like Lowry, Hill and Teague are the targets. Don't see how we afford the first two and I'm not really that keen on Teague.

Very sad to see Rubio gone. :(

Trading Rubio to give Teague 3/$38M makes absolutely no sense to me. Sigh.

Paul George to OKC is not something I saw coming.

Unbelievable! Completely out of nowhere.

Is that trade (Oladipo and Sabonis) the exact deal they got for Ibaka?

PG is a great fit next to Westbrook, really hope it works out and he stays long term

Didn't the Williams sisters both play against men many years ago in some exhibition match and they lost?

Edit: Yes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battl...998:_Karsten_Braasch_vs._the_Williams_sisters
"Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[34] between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager".[35][36] The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park,[37] after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two beers. He first took on Serena and after leading 5–0, beat her 6–1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6–2.[38] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun".[39] Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350."

Obviously Serena is a lot better than she was in 1998, but the point remains.
Problem with the claim they could beat someone at 350 after brassch beat them is that Braasch then told them since he had lost badly his last tournie that they could play again in 6 days when he would be ranked 400 LOL
