The AFL is a complete mess. Every year it gets worse.
There is hope with Gil the dill leaving.

Let's hope we get someone decent from club land like Gale & not another AFL lacky.

It's totally ridiculous that they are trying to take all the emotion out of the game. It just cant be done.
The other odd part is it's only ever paid to someone standing the mark
I was appalled shocked Harris Andrews didn't get one against him for rightfully questioning the ridiculous Hawkins decision.

Gale would be $1.05 to get the job if not shorter.

The AFL wont take a risk in such a crucial role and go outside.

Thought the AFL insider is the favourites. Travis Auld.

Sounds like the clubs are pushing for Gale.

Clubs want winds of change.
Think most supporters would too.

Gale seems a good operator & decent bloke.

The AFL have been out of touch for quite some time.

Fixing the umpiring wouldn't even be that hard of a task. It would just require the AFL prioritising it.

1) Make AFL level umpiring a full time position, with the responsibilities and scrutiny of that role

2) Review and simplify the rules to remove grey areas and interpretations

3) Improve the match review system by introducing precedent

I reckon there are nine target areas for addressing the rules:

1) Remove or change the ruling around the ball being knocked out in tackles, and players needing to "attempt" disposals. Either you do or don't dispose it properly. Clean up "prior" as well

2) Increase strictness of holding the man. Any holding off the ball, even a slight touch, should be a free against. Would open up the game and make it less like a lotto when a hold is paid

3) Introduce last touch out of bounds to remove the umpires needing to determine whether a player meant to keep the ball in or not

4) Remove bouncing the ball so umpires don't need to learn this skill and can focus on positioning and getting decisions correct

5) Revert the push in the back rule to a more simple hands in the back which is easier to adjudicate

6) Remove the ruck nomination rule and just throw the ball up as quickly as possible to reduce congestion. Would make the game freer and easier to adjudicate due to fewer packs

7) Have a dedicated media spokesperson from the umpiring department who can be contacted during the game to explain decisions and educate the public on the rules. Sometimes even the commentators don't actually know the rules

8) Pay high frees for ducks because it's easier to adjudicate (any high free is paid) but then suspend players that duck via the match review panel. I don't mean fine, I mean minimum one week suspension. Staging should also be heavily punished. Fooling the umpires is not on.

9) Once the rule review is complete, lock the rules for 5 years.

This is a free kick (block) without the exaggeration. I don't blame tall forwards for needing to highlight this. Way too much blocking and scrapping from defenders that don't allow forwards to have a go at the ball.
What's the alternate here though? What should frost do?

Seriously, a player cant move one the mark and now they cant hold their hands out, even if they say nothing. Joke

Players who raise their arms.......... what is this world coming too ??????
Gill cant go quick enough.
Next you wont be able to put your hands up to stand the mark

I came here to say this.

Can’t move on the mark, can’t wave your arms, can‘t bump, can’t say no to the vax, cant hold the microphone, no singing, no vertical consumption or horizontal folkdancing and did we mention it’s only two weeks to slow the spread..?

Okay…okay… I went off track a little bit there.

Point is, AFL’s just a sad reflection of the state of the country. More rules in this nanny state than a ****ing public pool.

And if you think any of it is getting better after Gillon leaves, you’re deluded.

If the arms out is automatically 50 we are going to see even more diving/playing for frees.

Every forward needs to be aware if they can get under their defenders skin they are going to get cheap as goals

Isn't arms out a "questioning" gesture?

"What was that for?"

So true.

Typical AFL, addressing the wrong issue.

As you say fix the umpiring and players won't need to hold out their arms. Fans and players just want consistency, it's not rocket science.
