G'day everyone, please excuse the intrusion. I come in peace.

I have a question which I've been very curious about, and which can only be properly answered by those who were there and lived it. Why did people jump off the Eagles and support Fremantle when the AFL club was formed?

In our state, we had the SANFL in which Port Adelaide was far and away the dominant club, with the largest supporter base, traditionally working-class. The Crows were created in controversial circumstances, as a composite with our supporters coming from all the other SANFL fan bases. Then Port entered the AFL in 1997, with their existing fan base.

I know you had two big clubs based in Fremantle, and the AFL decided to get another club and build on the footy tradition of the Freo area.

But who in their right mind would jump off a state side that had just won two flags onto a brand-new club (reportedly set up to fail) which has perenially sucked ever since? What was the mood in Perth like surrounding the creation of the Dockers, and why is the Dockers-Eagles fan split more even than the Crows-Power split? I understand that you didn't have the rivalry and controversy of Port trying to enter the AFL and the league stopping them by making a composite side.

You're assuming everyone supported the eagles in the first place.

You are assuming he means everyone.

But I’d say most did come from eagles fan base. That’s high enough to make questions valid.

It’s why they are angry, they made wrong choice and can’t back out now.

Growing up around Fremantle I know a lot of people did change from West Coast to Fremantle because it was felt more like their local team.

I know a lot of people who supported the eagles but had ties to freo- they may have lived close or used to support a freo WAFL side. Many of them chose to support both teams - I've found it's mainly younger supporters who have the whole freo vs eagles attitude. Also, freo was such a joke for it's first 10+ years that no-one really expected them to do anything worthwhile.

Personally, I was 10 years old when they came in and there was no way I was jumping off a premiership team and supporting a joke team with a terrible logo and colour scheme. I have never regretted my choice.

X-man makes some great points...but gee my posting stats will drop by half if I don't post hyper-critical garbage about footballers I have never even met. Must ruminate on this.

Yeah but how many actually come on here and read half the crap we write? A bit different to being a flog and personally tweeting the player some nasty msgs.

My sister started supporting Fremantle because all her friends did (no longer an issue, thankfully) and because she had a crush on Matthew Pavlich.
