He probably won't be selected; they're a better side without him. Their midfield is good enough to not need a negative presence.

I actually sympathise with him a bit. Made a dumb mistake rather than tried to cheat I think and 12 months might mean career over

Meanwhile a group of players that most likely did cheat will run out on subi oval on Saturday without serving any ban at all

He took methadone... I cant grasp how that was accidental? Thats some pretty strong stuff, and sourcing it outside the club after being in the system so long, under a coach who has everyone so well drilled on all matters... Smells a bit fishy, and setting a precedent of 12 months is very light. Moreso when you consider Saad got double that? for a preworkout drink that wouldnt offer you anything more than taking caffeine tablets. Freo are the new golden boys.

So the animal is free to play this year's grannie? Unbelievable. Methadone is serious shit. The fact that physically he's now completely under prepared, most likely won't get picked and will probably retire is besides the point.

You're obviously not risking putting him in the side underdone, if their current midfield setup gets them to the GF you'd be mental to risk it on an underdone one facet player but yeah, don't see him going around again seeing as how much better off they've looked without him.

I never saw anywhere that it was Methadone, only it was a narcotics-based painkiller, which are incredibly easy to come by.

12 months is fair, but he should've been banned/sidelined from the moment he returned a positive sample.
I agree, but I wonder if there has been cases were the B sample has come back clean? In that case I think it would be pretty unfair on the player.

For sure. But in the case of a positive sample, they should be making every effort to make the follow up as soon as possible.

Saad was suspended for 18 months by the way. Was harsh then and is still harsh now. All things considered the Crowley suspension is fair.
Personally i think all these suspensions are actually too harsh and it would be more effective issuing large fines.

people would buy a Gold medal in the big time.

There would still be suspensions, but for what can be perceived as minor infractions, you can simply reduce suspension lengths and tack on hefty fines.
Saad drinking some energy drink is hardly buying a gold medal, this isnt Lance Armstrong levels of systematic doping.

Didn't Ahmed Saad get 2 years?

Yes, but the circumstances are clearly different. Ahmed Saad, took a pre-workout that contained a banned performance enhancing substance, methylsynephrine. It's chemically similar to amphetamine, which obviously has performance enhancing abilities. It's still incredibly harsh, but that's the code.

People here saying Methadone is super serious are kind of kidding themselves. It's like that Canadian snowboarder that got stripped of a gold medal for smoking dope. Neither are performance enhancing, but decreasing. It was not even pure methadone, but only part of a painkiller and prescribed by a doctor, for a clearly defined injury.

12 months is hugely unfair, but I agree with it. It's enforcing the policy that exists. As others have mentioned before, Essendon has been up to their necks in dubious shit and they'll still run out there with Hird as coach and a huge list of the same players.

Really? I thought they were reporting he was still training at the club, not with the main group, and was also allowed to mentor the youngsters.
Heard on the radio today that he can begin training with the club in the last 2 months of his suspension in order to get ready for finals, in case he gets the call up

The way I read it was that it's deemed as performance enhancing because due to it not being an approved AFL painkiller and administered by a club doctor, he is able to pay through pain that all the other players would not be able to play through. Not saying I agree with it, but that's how I see it.

Cortisone injections would be just as, if not more, effective than a one-off dose of methadone.
