The thing on the Goodes booing is that him getting off at the MRP for a couple of incidents of dirtily kneeing players (if I remember that rightly) almost perfectly coincided with the negative (and racist) publicity around his Australian of the Year comments. It seemed to stoke crowds and embolden their (both overt and latent) racism. And then the AFL Media tried to tell fans what they should and shouldn't do, which was a recipe for disaster.

Yep, then Roos came into with the old "muscle memory" line about how Goodes used to play soccer as a junior and see a ball on the ground it was purely instinctive for him to slide in studs/knees first at the contest - despite playing professional AFL for over a decade.

I will say I booed him at that time as I naively thought it was about the sliding and in retrospect I'm not happy with how it influenced him and became a racist taunt against him.

Richmond players burrowed their head a few times and were rewarded frees over the weekend. I thought they changed that rule to penalise the ducker and not pay high frees to the player tackling or standing their ground?

Just completely gone. As soon as Grimes did the exact same thing he's done his entire career: ducks, slaps the arm up and throes his head back like he's got whiplash - it set the tone for the rest of the game. And to be fair Darling did fairly similar and got a free not long after. (And Shuey doing the same as Ol' Grimey too)

As some put it at the time, yes it was perfectly fine to boo Adam Goodes shooting at goal or winning a controversial free kick or perceived rough play. If Adam Goodes played 100 games for your club then decided to move to Sydney, boo him to your heart's content - we do it all the time to other players.

But when you were booing him before he even did anything, and when he and others expressed the view that it was now racist in nature and a slight at his Australian of the Year comments, and when the self-confessed racist bigots wanted to keep booing - well, why are you still booing? Is it worth 'sticking it to the man' by lumping yourself in with the idiots?

Well no, I'm trying to say I didn't realise this at the time and I regret it. Thought that was pretty clear.

Was adding onto your post, not saying I agree or disagree or calling you a racist.

I was also one of those booing, and not one of those saying Boo-urns.

Can someone explain this Buddy Franklin getting booed = racism thing to me?

During the game itself I just thought people were booing him because he's a good player, and the crowd wanted to put him off his game. Now after the game it was racist and Collingwood and Sydney have had to put out press releases?

I understand the history behind Goodes - he was an advocate for indigenous rights, and people booing someone for that stance would be considered racist (and also he made the "mistake" of publicly getting upset about it, which just reinforced the behaviour in dickheads). But to my knowledge Buddy isnt really heavily into that sort of stuff like Goodes was?

What part of it was racist?

I suggest reading one of the many threads, articles and interviews that discussed it at the time and when he declined to attend the HoF dinner last year if you're interested.

I boooed him for being a dirty player (only at the time of the incident and not everytime he touched the ball). The fact he chose to play the victim is his problem. His conduct in the last few years of his career made me lose a lot of respect for him, he was too slow to play at his previous level so decided to become dirty to compensate.

I just did a quick google but cant find anything on the HoF dinner - what happened there?

Any rule that relies on an umpire reading a players mind is in trouble - they are erring on the side of 'protect the head' now

Many non swans supporters in Sydneuy refered to him as a cat. There was quite a dislike for his behaviour.

Grass I can accept, but dirt??
5 or 6 years old I remember I was always hungry and I tried dirt once . Only the once . I know some people have disorders eating things they shouldn't. You are right it isn't normal after 2 years old .

Pav did exactly the same thing in 2016. Was generally a fair player then went full sniper for his final season.

Some players who had superb athleticism can get a bit dirty when they lose it with age - one edge they could depend on has gone so they look for another.

Players without superb athleticism are more likely to build an entire career on it.

And there's GAblett snr who did both.
