North Melbourne has announced a significant partnership with World Vision Australia as it moves to enhance its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The Kangaroos have announced an arrangement with World Vision Australia, which insists its partners derive no profits from the gambling industry.

North Melbourne CEO Eugene Arocca has described attacks on the club’s partnership with World Vision Australia as ‘disappointing’ and ‘offensive’.

His strong stance comes after former directors John Nicholson and Peter de Rauch claimed the club was against pokies and gambling revenue in the Herald Sun on Tuesday.

“I think it’s a disgrace we have to defend a relationship we have with an organisation as highly regarded as World Vision Australia,” Arocca told kangaroos.com.au.

“World Vision helps more than 20 million people every year and provides critical relief, community development and addresses poverty throughout the world. We see this relationship as nothing but a positive step for our club and we are committed to working with this group to achieve some great outcomes on a broad scale.

North Melbourne chairman James Brayshaw has slammed claims his club's decision to partner with World Vision Australia would limit its ability to earn external income.

The club has announced an arrangement with the organisation, which insists its partners derive no profits from the gambling industry.

"We have a partnership with World Vision because we think it's the right thing to do because of all the amazing things they do, and we're not making a stance against gambling or pokies machine income in football at all,” Brayshaw told radio station SEN.

Surprised this hasn't been on the main board.

Great stuff by the Kangas. Bloody fantastic. This PDR and Nicholson characters seem like big fat heartless fatcats.

Pioneer of CSR in the AFL.

Has even got Patrick Smith buying a membership hahah :D

Suicide from the Kangaroos. Not impressed at all. Charity begins at home. Very self-righteous act.

Do they even want to survive?

Survive at the cost of ruining your own supporters' lives? What is the point of being a community club if you destroy those that you serve?

If clubs can't survive without leaching on their own supporters then our game is doomed.

I'd prefer if we can survive without resorting to gambling revenue and hope taking a stand against it will draw support from companies who want to be associated with that kind of thinking.

I just don't believe clubs in Victoria have tried to become sustainable without gambling revenue and it is pretty sad that one of the poorest ones is giving it a go and knocking back lucrative gaming venues.

Are they trying to get Melbourne's far too many hipsters to buy memberships as a badge of honour, though never go to games, and wear North guernseys (must be collared) around the streets of Fitzroy, in a like, you know, ironic way?

Bullshit.

It would be self righteous if Arocca and Brayshaw openly bagged other clubs for having pokies, which they haven't.

The current announcements are just a reinforcement of the community engagement agenda North has been promoting for the last few years.

Hipsters wouldn't like WVA as they are religious. And, try to act even more ancient and out of touch next time!!

I think it's a stupid idea to align the club to a religious organisation, a very stupid idea.

It would be one thing for a powerhouse like Collingwood to go down this road, but fail to see how ending ties with an incoming money stream can be a good thing for a club that actually needs the cash.

You're assuming that all people that gamble are problem gamblers? Wrong. Most are not.

They'd better not receive funds from alcohol, cigarettes, junk food or television, as all of these things can cause problems as well.

Don't North receive funds from the AFL, who are funded by gambling themselves?

In all fairness the article highlighted Barcelona's use of UNICEF. The fact though is that didn't end up working in Barcelona favour and they have now ditched the UNICEF logo to I think the shorts and have taken a paying sponsor now on the shirt.

I hope in some way this pays off but it is hard seeing how it would. Good on them though.

Truth eb know North has wasted a packet of money over the years establishing gamin venues which failed.

Might as well make it a virtue, north are a reformed failed bookmaker

I am assuming he means gaming venues, like most clubs have on their books.
I'm sure he is. But North doesn't actually run any pokies/pokie venues, so they aren't actually giving up any existing revenue stream.

True, they aren't pursuing them either ; but the harsh reality is that North never did well out of it when they did go down that path (IIRC, attempted made by the board when messrs Nicholson & De Rauch were on the board).

We had one of the most profitable social clubs, which died in the arse when AFL forced clubs to abandon their suburban stadiums.

Carlton had the same issue when they stopped playing at PP.

What happened to the Kanga Casino at Arden St?

Same thing that happened to Carlton's social club at PP, when you don't play games there it doesn't attract the same level of people to the social club at the stadium.

Now the place to be is low income demograph suburban areas which are rife for problem gamblers, that is why Hawthorn are plonking a new gaming venue smack in the middle of the western suburbs. Because they are a family club. Tha Manson family. :p

Good on them and it gives them a point of difference. It's risky, as they're a poor club, but more clubs should follow their lead.

Spot on, we aren't saying we're anti gambling we're saying we're pro community. Not being reliant on money from a problem area of society puts us in a position of difference to push that message.

So the theory is: we tried and failed, let's pretend we're above it?
