Game Analysis – Brayshaws vs McGuires
Formline
Gosh – we are up and down like a brides nighty at the moment! Two weeks ago I thought we were all but gone coming up against the Swans and Crows who at that point I thought were more likely to beat us. Obviously we won both and whilst both have been a little ugly the old adage of ‘winning form is good form’ cannot be ignored.
I do think we have to be cautiouis about the Crows win and not getting overly excited given they had no McLeod/Hentschel and then lost two of their best three at crucial stages for them.
At selection
Well you would have to say it’s a very settled side at the moment and that is usually a great pre cursor to success. I would like to see Fraser come in and roam the fwd 50 as I think he will add a great dimension to our fwd line. Goldsack is the obvious one to miss in my opinion.
As an outside, this might be a good game for Danny Stanley as the North mids are pretty physical and this game should suit him. His form has been terrific so he would be the other bloke under consideration.
If Wellinghams fit you would look at him to do a job on Wells possibly.
The gameplan – what do we want to see
I would probably prefer these blokes at the G to be honest but in saying that they beat us there earlier this year so not sure it matters. I prefer the G because our fwds get more room to work in than the tighter/narrower Dome. We like playing the flanks so not convinced Dome suits us.
On the reverse the games are usually quicker and you would think that will suit us much more than the slower Roos.
Mick and Dean coach very similarly, its all about sticking to your game plan, pressuring the ball carrier and being very very competitive.
Key matchups
Not sure this is an area that we will have it as good as we have in the last two weeks. Think the Swans and Crows really struggle to match us up whereas I think the Roos match well against us and then cause us some problems.
Our issue with them will be making sure Harvey and Wells stay in check in the midfield. Wells is showing signs of turning his form and other than Shaw we don’t have an option for him.
Forward is the more worrying area and good Pie supporters will remember the damage Thomas and Campbell did to us in the last qtr earlier this year. Clarke clearly gets one of them but he got Thomas last time and really struggled so that will clearly be taking some time up down a the Lexus Centre this week.
Grant will be back this week and will have a point to prove so send Heath Shaw to him.
What worrying Mick
He would be feeling ok at the moment but he would still be nervous about whether his blokes turn up ‘switched on or not’. You cannot give a 5 goal lead to a team like North (as we did v Crows) and expect to win. At a player level he would be worried about making sure Cloke can run Firrito off his feet and how he negates the North little fellas.
What's worrying Deano
Just how to get his team up and going and playing at the intensity they need to. They have looked v ordinary at times this year and he would know for them to be a finals threat they have to turn up playing at their absolute optimum.
Who needs to step up
Maxwell – he is just not going real good at the moment. His effort last week bordered on horrific. He gave away far to many frees that were just dumb frees to give away. He really needs to step up because he is a lot better than what we are seeing.
As good as Pendles is he has been v quiet this year. He hasn’t been bad but he can be better. At times he did really nice things last week, particularly when he ran back into the pack, so the effort is there its just the production.
Davis another but I think he is still carrying an injury and like Fraser and Rocca he doesn’t carry injuries terribly well.
The result
I think we should win this one based on form but you cannot discount the men from Arden St. If they turn up hell bent on winning we may not get the result we want if we aint at our best.
Pies by 3 goals…….
