This is our Captain.
Gaze into his eyes.
Within them he holds no fear.
He looks directly into your eyes as he speaks.
There is no hesitation. No glancing sideways, or backwards, looking for affirmation. He knows he is strong. He is confident.
He seems wise beyond his years, but still bursting with the enthusiasm of youth. You can see how much he wanted this. From the doldrums of waiting for his name to be called on draft day, only to be dissapointed beyond words. Picks himself up, dusts himself off. There is no giving up in this young man. The joy of being placed on the rookie list of an AFL club. For some, it gets no better than this. But not for Nick Maxwell. There is experience, skill and leadership beyond words to absorb when he arrives at the Lexus Centre. Nick soaks it all up. Working, waiting, wanting. What better place to do an apprenticeship than under the most masterfull of teachers and leaders. Nick has never stopped in his quest from the moment he entered the door and painted himself Black and White forever.
I am filled with a calm sense of confidence and trust.

Well written little peice of fluff that I find hard to take serious coming from someone who was very questioning mid season of whether the appointment of Burns was a mistake.

What has that got to do with the price of fish?
I am fully confident that Maxy will play each and every game this year.
With Burnsy, I was not.
I am fully confident that Maxy will lead us head first into the next great era for our club.
With Burnsy, I was worried that he wouldn't be able to play out the season due to aging legs.

Lead us to the promised land Maxy :thumbsu:

Say something about him on field.

Say something about him on field.

I am not one of his biggest fans, but he does stand up when needed and he has a huge heart.
I remember against Hawthorn last year when he was put on Buddy in the 3rd quarter, he actually did a serviceable job. Even out marked him a couple of times. He did not have too many mates though. :o
He goes in hard and does not shirk a contest. Last year was not his best, but this appointment could be the making of him as a player.
He was one of our better players in elimination final against Adelaide and played the finals with a broken wrist. :thumbsu:
Too bad Big Bucks is not around to give us his opinion on Maxwell. :D
Must have been banned for life from this site.

Here is one I wrote myself not in relation to Maxy but I read it at my Dad's recent funeral - but it go's hand in hand with the Collingwood way and Maxy.

Here it is:
Hero
A hero
Isn't rich or famous
As most seem to believe
But he's an ordinary man
Who does simple things in extraordinary ways
that few see

A hero
Isn't the dictionary definition
That most accept
But he's a simple and kind man
Who does the little things
No one sees

A hero
Isn't well known
As most tend to think
But he's a common man
Who changes lives
when few see

A hero
Isn't in magazines
as most accept
but he's an ordinary man
Who does anything for any one
When few see

A hero
Isn't in the news or on T.V.(except Maxy!)
as most tend to believe
But he's the simplest kind of man
Who's in our lives persevering every day
even when no one sees

Tender, eloquent, succinct. I'm sorry to hear the circumstances in which it was written, but equally as impressed you've chosen to dedicate it in this way.

It was worthy to put in this thread.:thumbsu: It is the pies that is the driving force behind my days.:)

That's beautiful. You could be talking about my own father. :thumbsu:

Maaaate, that was awesome! Well done! Not a single wrong word spoken about our leader.

I think everyone should follow my lead and start calling him 'Skipper' Maxwell. He was destined to achieve such greatness at the Collingwood FC.

Those that doubt his on-field ability, name for me another Collingwood player with as much heart, determination, confidence and desire to constantly improve and be better every passing second on that field.

Everytime we're having a shocker, who is always performing and being our best player? 'Skipper' Maxwell.

Why? Because he doesn't worry about the score board, he doesn't worry about what stage the game is at, he doesn't worry what quarter it is. He is always trying his hardest and pushing himself.

Essendon of 2001, Geelong of 2008, West Coast of 2005. What were they missing? A 'Skipper' Maxwell to assist their more talented players, because there wasn't enough heart to get them over the line.

You need heart, you need sheer determination, and it is your lesser lights/lesser talented players or roughies as some call them, to lift the team and perform one inspirational act which will lift the rest of the team up and get them over the line.

'Skipper' Maxwell is the perfect choice as captain, and will constantly feature for the Magpies in years to come. Have faith.

" The Hammer " as in the song - Maxwells silver hammer

Who is the egg-man and who is the Walrus?

Pielebo makes a good point about the spiritual lift being an intangible and important ingredient. I noted that Mick said Maxwell was always one of the first picked in the side and presumably it must be for this reason. Just hope no-one tries to rag-doll him because he's not the biggest bloke in town, but with N Brown and Harry down back you know he will get back up.

Lead us to the promised land Maxy :thumbsu:

Your right Burns was a choice that was made out of no other reasonable option. The same way Maxwell has. If Maxwell was such a stand out for captaincy he would have got it last year.

Make no mistake his a last resort choice and not the ideal choice. I am sure he will do it well and we all know he will give it everything his got but lets be real here. If Pendles or Cloke where a couple of years older Maxwell would not be captain.

As for leading us to the promised land I think it's hard for him to lead when he is not garunteed a ticket there himself. There are a long list of players vying for a similar position with more upside and less intangibles and Maxwell's personal form has had horrid runs over the last couple of years when we have had no viable replacement. He won't have that luxury for long, on top of that he will have the added burden of being captain when fighting for a spot in the side.

I don't know how many people here have had to play a sport at a decent level under a captain that would be border line at the selection table if they weren't captain. Especially one that is a stern hard line type leader which Maxy projects as. Personally when I was preforming fine and he was having a shocker season by the end the speeches etc etc etc get tiresome. You can do so much off the field but if your not playing your part on the field it accounts for not much at all.

What Maxwell needs to do is watch as many games of Tony Shaw as he can. Shaw knew his limits and worked within them and was one of our greatest Captains Maxwell needs to do the same. He is no Buckley or Burns when it comes to talent but he does the things that you want your leader to do. The Adelaide game is the one for me. He had a job to do which he did 100% he went hard at the ball and man but didn't try and be a enforcer like pants was or even Molloy. He is a tough player but when he tries to be tough is where he goes wrong. If he just goes about it like he did in the crows game he will be a good captain for us.
