Official: Geelong List, Changes, Deslitings, Drafting 2008 Season

This is an extract from a post on the Eagles board explaining how they see their list for season 08.

Although now we have...
OUT: Judd & Morton (Traded), Rojo & Wooden (Retired), Chick (Delisted), Braun & Cuz (Veterans List)
IN: Kennedy, McNamara (Upgrade), Pick 3, 13, 20, 30, 35

7 and 7 makes sense.

On our rookie list:
OUT: Wilkes (Sad to see that), Thornton, Sharp, Cones?
Retained: Spaandermann, Cones (Or does he have to go if he isnt upgraded?)
IN: Braun and Cuz (2 Veterans List spots), NSW Kid, 2 Rookies (Or 1 if Cones can stay which i doubt).

Is there anyone on our board who can give a similar summary of how the list at the Cats stands. Things I don't understand very well are the Rookie List, the Veterans List, and how many veterans can be half-payment in the salary cap.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We will pick Donohue with our last selection.

We will elevate Lonergan. We will keep Davenport and Bedford as rookies and delist Grima and Reynolds.

That will require 5 spots on the senior list to be freed up.

Spencer, Owen and Sam Hunt will be delisted. Owen will be re-drafted as a rookie.

Callan to the Bulldogs for a late pick (which we won't use).

Playfair to Sydney for 44.

If Gardiner goes as well we can also elevate Grima.


So, in summary:

Out: Playfair, Callan, Spencer, Owen, S Hunt
In: Picks 17, 34, 44, Donohue (with pick 50), Lonergan

I think they will be quite keen to move Gardiner on then if thats the case. Charlie is better off at a club where there are more opportunities at any rate.

Still who knows what can happen the last day of trade week. Thompson and Grima to me belong on our senior list and I hope however it can be done they make that happen.

Here's another shot at it:

OUT: Callan (Dogs), Playfair (Swans), King (probably PSD), Gardiner (hopefully Carlton for #36), Spencer (delisted), one of Owen/S Hunt (delisted)
IN: Lonergan, Grima, Donohue (pick 44), picks 17, 34, 36

Rookie list:
OUT: Reynolds (delisted), Lonergan (elevated), Grima (elevated)
RETAINED: Davenport (nominated rookie), Bedford
IN: Three players, including a project ruckman

No change to veterans list - only Milburn qualifies again - which allows us to delist one less and keep Davenport on the rookie list as a nominated rookie who is available for senior selection. Otherwise I would be pushing very hard for Davenport to be elevated as well - this guy is ready for senior footy and could be a star.

Top draft priorities should be a key defender and a ruckman.

Thanks guys so far.

I noticed the Pies have one veteran inside the list - is he the one that has the payments halved for the salary cap.

Also they have one veteran outside the list, reducing their rookie list by one. What's the advantage of naming this player as a veteran if you lose a rookie.

Nothings been made official re Reynolds. Until it is i i wont change it. Dunno everyone has different thoughts. I was under the impression it was our "last" pick.

Does that mean we can't 'pass' on any of the earlier picks in order to use 90 as our last one?

No we can pass as many as we want and use 90. Although i assume we can just take him with the last pick we want to use?

I don't think that's the final list as we can't keep Grima as a rookie. I don't think we'll be using any more than three picks so the third piuck will need to be Donohue.

Todd Grima can't be a Rookie next year, hes either on the list or has to be de-listed.

I know. however it is the CURRENT list. I will update it as we find out delistings. Until then its onlu guess work

Yeah, that just dawned on me. If you're at the point where you are going to pass on a trade you might as well use it for Donoghue.

So once we're at that point, we use the pick on Donohue.

Thanks for clearing catempire. That would mean that pick 50 (our pick) would be "our" last.

also, Steven Wells has said we will use at least 4 picks this year.

If we want Grima we just promote him. What if we want Scott Thompson from our VFL team? Do we use a draft pick.

And Rizzo what's the (V+) beside Milburn. Veteran I know but is his payment halved for cap purposes. Does he take the place of a rookie.

Thompson nominates for the draft and can be selected by any club. We have no priority for him.

V+ = Veteran. I think there are salary cap bonusses attached to it. Can't be sure of the figure. Yep veterans take place of a rookie. So you can have 0 Vets + 6 Rookies, 1 vet + 5 Rookies or 2 Vets +4 Rookies.
