I have made my mind up on Murphy and have decided he is a keeper for sure. Simple as this you dont trade away a guy that could quite easily kick 50+ goals per season on a consistent basis.

There have been rumours of us looking at guys like McGregor for a foil to Pavlich, why??? So we can let one of OUR OWN kids rot in the 2's than get disgruntled and piss off??
When we were up and running in 2006 he was a huge part of that success, in the run of games we won at the end of the season he kicked 15 goals from 7 games.
He is only a 22 yr old kid FFS and probably needs to add another 3 or so Kgs to his body to be a big key forward. If he doesnt work at FF play him at CHB we know he can do that. Afterall thats where he played a lot as a junior.

Keep the guy and play him.

Its all relative to what we get offered. you would not want to get mcgregor for murphy. if we were offered a first round draft pick then we should look at that, but otherwise we should keep him. in saying all of this, he really needs to show more desire, some of his efforts this year were very ordinary, and that is the reason he wasnt played

Did you watch the final where he kicked 5 in the first half mate? He looked so different there, had the F50 to lead into, he marked well and kicked straight. And he got really pumped up after slotting one.

Agree completely. Don't get rid of him for the sake of it but if a good trade is offered then take it. I also agree with his efforts this year, he lacked intensity in most games.

Great thread wiz - I think it's time we showed a bit of faith in the players we have on our list to develop and take us forward to where we want to go. Murph definitely lacked intensity for the most part of this year, but he also turned it around in the last month.

hey i wont deny that he has had great games. the problem is consistency and intensity. he COULD be a great player, but he has been at the club for five years now i think it is. thats plenty of time to prove himself and imo he hasnt yet

I have got to say i will be gutted if he leaves, one of my favourite players at Freo and i have no doubt will be a future AA

Wizard - Murphy never kicked 5 in a final. :o I assume you are referring to the semi final against Melbourne. It may have seemed like five goals, because he was certainly our best forward that night and was instrumental in the victory, but it was either 2 or 3 goals from memory. And he missed at least one sitter.

We won't get a first round pick for him, that's for sure. I would have thought a pick around 20-25 would be reasonable. If not, then he stays. :thumbsu:

Jetau, I think wiz is referring to the WAFL finals this year - Murph kicked 6 of Souths 10 in the prelim. If Souths had shown up after half time he probably would have finished with 10 or more.

What's a pick 20-25 going to get us? Not much from the reports on this draft. Do you think pick 20-25 is going to be any better than Murphy?

He was talking about the WAFL pre lim, Murphy was dominant

Let's say that Murphy doesn't stay and is traded for a decent pick/midfielder.

Next year we need three tall forwards, and we have Pavlich and Tarrant certainties for two of those roles. the other spot, which would not be used every game, for example only two tall forwards may be used im Sydney, and we have Campbell and Drum as pretty good options, as well as a host of tall backmen who have the ability to play forward such as MacPharlin, Mundy and Thornton. Added into the equation is Warnock who could spend a quarter of his match time up forward, and Sandilands who has been a good shock weapon up forward as well.

If we have decent trade available then i think we should take it.

Big Bird/Robbie(tallest roosters in AFL) need to step up and each kick a goal a game resting up forward. When they ain't then third forward role can be taken by either drum or Dessie

With tatter it tink it's between the ears - I don't hink he quite feels he belongs in AFL. This could be with the way Cuddles handled him but he has contributed to his predicament by not showing enough of the second and third efforts when ball hits the deck.

He's a keeper always been a keeper. KPP dont grow on trees especially ones with ability. He needs to start at FF and stay there not dropped after 1 game.
Plus you will see a different forward line this year as Tarrant would of done a full-pre-season. Last year he hadnt so for alot he stayed closer to goal but now he will be able to play more as a HFF and lead up with Murph's as our leading FF.
You dont trade KPP for pick 20-25 which wont replace him. He would be a decent fit at the doggies tho and Ray would be a good trade. But only trade if its worthwhile no just for the sake of it.

OK, so he's kicked goals in the WAFL. So has Brad Smith. :o

I'm no Murphy hater but he didn't fire a shot in 2007. Personally I think he should be kept as a back up to Tarrant and co unless a suitable deal manifests itself. I know that Farren Ray isn't the most highly rated player in the world, but he would be more use to us that Murphy at the minute - a straight swap would be fair. :)

And if Smith hadn't had 2 serious knee recons in the last 2 years he would still be on the weavils list. Murph is 22. He's been at the club for 4 years. Yes, he needs to start delivering, but now is not the time to be jumping the gun on him. He's just starting to get a bit more bulk, his attitude seems to be on the improve and there is no doubting his talent. I just hope all those that are more than happy to see him go aren't going to be back here in 12 months whinging about our poor trading and letting another good player go.

Agree with most here.

Guys like Murph don't come around every draft but he had an absolutely forgettable year in 2007. Didnt play with any intensity or show any desire to impress until round 22 when he got a late reprieve. But we all know the boys got skills and if he can settle into a position he could easily kick 40-50 goals to back up Pav, Taz and the Wiz for many years to come.

Problem is, after such a shocking year, his name will pop up during trade week if we go after a decent midfielder. I hope we don't have to let him go but if a speedy, decent midfielder was on offer that might be the way the cards fall...

Farren Ray couldn't even get a consistent game this year in a team that was worse than ours, so realistically, we'd be getting screwed if we swapped Murphy for him. I reckon the second rounder alone should be enough for Ray and keep Murph in the purple for another couple of years at least.

The boy is torn, his sis is over here who he is close to and she works at the club but he also wants to head home.

I reckon he'll be part of a deal to get Farren Ray. :thumbsu:

is ray contracted?

i cant decide what i would do with murphy. on one hand he is incredibly talented and on the other he is a bit suspect mentally

he was good in the prelim for south but how about the room he was given? it was basically him and his opponent in the forward 50. he will never get that sort of space in an AFL match

I dont think so.

He is a lead up foward, I can only see him suceeding if he played as an lead up foward AKA Taz or Hansesn.

A link man who can push foward deep now and then. :thumbsu:

It all depends on how his one on one with Harvey went. If he wants to stay and is desperate to improve we should retain him. If his response was lukewarm we should trade him.
