Draft position has has some impact especially with a younger player, but you waaaay over simplified. You emphasized the point that you'd put a few years development into him but didn't mention that he's barely shown anything at AFL level...
If you think Lisle is worth more than pick 40, put a value on him?
He absolutely smashed Dawes when we played Collingwood earlier in the year, and if he had his kicking boots on against Fremantle in Round 11 he could have easily kicked 4 or 5. Instead, he kicked 0.2, one OOF and one that fell short.
To say he's shown nothing is simply not true.
If Gillies was out of contract this year (which he isn't) I'd suggest a straight swap for Lisle. Unfortunately, I strongly doubt Geelong would even enter discussions with Hawthorn, due to being a top 4 contender.
He's one of those players that is worth more to the club than on the trade table, but because he's out of contract and apparently wanting out for better opportunities, we will probably lose him for very little or nothing.
Whoever lands him will get a very talented player.
