Take note of Albury, they don’t gift their ageing stars games, no matter who you are. In the end they had to tell Fowler he wasn’t good enough. I’ve had to do the same thing, sit a bloke down in the dimmed rooms after hours and tell him he’s done, dumbbells flying across the room, tears flowing, this caper is not for the faint hearted. Stevie-J has been there, got the tap on the shoulder at Geelong, Chris Scott wouldn’t look him in the eye, Stevie threw the toys from the cot and Scott had to later go to his house to console him.
Was the Auskick kid’s mum there when you delivered the bad news or maybe one of the Carlton Crew to tell the kid to toughen the **** up?

Pecker bagged ten against lowly opposition which is a nice boost for the average, anyone who studied the Albury vs Wang game at Biralee Park in that that last final would’ve seen Newton is a spent force. He was beaten one out on every occasion and barely chased. They can’t rely on him anymore, you’d rather a lively forward pocket sniffing under Moore’s feet than him lurking. Baiter is also done. Marklew is in his prime, would’ve been close to first in the comp for goal assists, has a high pressure defensive side to his game, ridiculous to cherry pick stats to suit your bias Peta.
Didn’t Newton have a serious knee injury leading into the finals?

I saw Newton a couple of times last year, he apparently can't jump anymore but one on one he doesn't seem to get beaten, he leads and takes marks. He apparently can't run anymore either but still manages to get in the clear and get the ball. He's still good enough to get a game in a top side. What a great player who's given this comp plenty to cheer about and I hope he keeps going. How good for a young bloke to play on him and learn what it's all about, these guys are priceless.

I saw Wang play Lavi at Lavi about a decade ago and he tore them apart and he's still going, I'll never forget that day.

I think the player everyone is forgetting at Yarra when the discussion turns to forwards is Matt Casey. Correct me if I’m wrong, but started back last year before being swung into to familiar territory near the big sticks. Full season forward he kicks 40 to 50 goals. Good presence alongside Williams who is not dropping off like Newton.

The one exception to rule of Albury not gifting “ageing” stars flags might have been Jason Sheather in the first of 3 in a row under Spargo in 2009. Sheather missed the 1990s Tigers flags and was a great servant in ensuing seasons. But my black cat could have coached that side to a flag. Grand final absolute non event. Boring as bat to watch

Observation, O&M players who have played well in to their 30s, they’re completely committed to their health. Newton, Porter, Kelly and Reid all appear to have leaned right down as they’ve aged. Stabber Caruso was well ahead of his time, played good footy until he was 43, had skinfolds like tissue paper. I don’t think we will ever see that again, Brodie has it in his veins to do it, but I think will retire prematurely once that Premiership cup comes back home.

At the risk of a tsunami of abuse has Beddy been in Corowa long enough to get a vibe of how the “reset” is travelling? Few schooners always lead to some honest assessments

Superstar of O&M. Second only to Robbie Walker of his era which is a serious compliment. Since 2000 the top 10 contenders have got to include Craig Ednie, Drew Barnes, Chris Hyde,Shaun Daly, Joel Mackie, Xavier Leslie, Jon McCormick.
Brad Murray, Mick Stevens worth a shout. Tim Cooper was very underrated player in those Yarra sides of early 2010s. maybe left field for some, but you’d love to play alongside Carl Dickins from Corowa.

Geez the Wodonga Raiders have recruited well or so it appears,,, they have picked up a guy bt the name of Sam Stubbs from Mt Gravatt in the QAFL.. this guy can play , not a big tall forward but a solid strong guy that takes those marks that are so classy and when the ball is on the ground the same ,, he should do ok at O&M level

Brunner was Mr fitness
Speaking to someone who is heavily involved within the board level, they've already conceded that after their round 1 clash they won't be able to field a reserves team due to lack of numbers coming through

Whilst there were good numbers on the track when Horse was there, a lot of those numbers were made up by under 18's kids and even then, that in itself isn't great either.

It's going to be a very very grim season for Corowa Rutherglen unfortunately.

I heard Dan Leslie was pretty good too

Leslie’s best trait was his loyalty, something modern players don’t have. I’m telling you now, nothing tastes as sweet as a victory with a bunch of men who’ve struggled through dark times together, the piss is sweeter the song is louder and the friendships are stronger. There was a bunch of blokes I trained in the 90s, they would’ve jumper in front of stray lead for one another, dirty money dangling, not one of them tempted, and each one has three medallions tucked in the dresser, that’s what football is all about.

Rhys mathieson has signed with wilston grange in the qafl. Looks like raiders missed out on his signature.
