It has been reported that former Woodville - West Torrens and current Geelong player Mathew Stokes has been arrested in connection with possessing illicit drugs and suspected TRAFFICKING of cocaine.

If this turns out to be true (and at the moment it is just speculation), then WOW . It certainly raises a few questions that would concern all players of AFL.

One thing springs to mind immediately:

Whether or not some of his team mates / peers would have known about it and the implications that would have. Is this a can of worms that has just been opened?

UPDATE 2.42pm: GEELONG premiership player Mathew Stokes has been charged with possessing and trafficking one gram of pure cocaine.
The young forward was granted bail after a hearing in the Geelong Magistrates' Court this afternoon.

The court heard Stokes purchased one gram of cocaine from a Geelong nightclub worker last month to give to friends from the Northern Territory.

The court heard he told police he had never consumed the drugs.

I call bullshit!

Just holding onto it for a mate, I refuse to believe he's that stupid!

Yeah I PM'd Stabby to find out correct posting procedure. Please delete if not appropriate.

I'm too pretty to go to jail, and to poor to pay the fine :o!

Users shouldn't be charged with criminal offenses only dealers and growers.

Users need help, not criminal charges or Gaol.

Trafficking is a dealer-type offence. Then again, holding 1 gram for his mates is hardly at the Schappelle Corby level of trafficking.

He 'apparently' arranged the deal. So organised the sale of 1 gram to a mate.

The organisation of a sale is trafficking, but I thought you needed 600 grams to be done for that?

He'll get possession charges.

Im a bit ignorant to these sort of things, 1 gram doesnt sound too much, is it really worth being labelled trafficking?

What sort of jail time (if any) would people expect he'd recieve?

i saw adrian anderson talking on the news sayin if he gets charged with trafficking the afl imposes 4yrs - lifetime ban...

lets hope he didn't really say it was for a mate in the NT who he was taking it to. Even the average footy player isn't that dumb surely. Personal use man!! personal use!!

Wait - they can't give him a four year ban if he's CHARGED, surely? What if he's eventually found not guilty?

Of course, the same thing is happening with Lovett at the moment, so it is an interesting time ...

It's a WADA mandated penalty (4-years to life) if he's found guilty. For now he's been charged and is suspended indefinitely. That suspension will become a deregistration & permaban if he's found guilty. If he's found not guilty, then presumably the suspension would be lifted and it's back to normal.

Interestingly, there's no indication that he's taken any of the drugs himself nor involved any of his teammates. He appears to have made a confession, which would seem to make a not-guilty plea somewhat difficult!

No, he has to be convicted of trafficking and WADA will impose a 4 to lifetime ban.

If he's a user, I presume it's strike one and the AFL will charge him for bringing the game into disrepute ala Cousins and impose a ban of their own.

Why should they get help?

Because they're still people, who have problems.

As Dostoyevsky said, we can judge a society by how it treats the least among them. Which realistically tells me we're ******.
