I just fixed my computer and was suprised when i came on here and there wasnt a thread about the melbourne cup!

So what bets did people have? Did anyone back the winner?

i had some bets:

$3 each way on Elvstroem (4th) and She's Archie (last) mainly because i backed it last year and it paid well:p

$1 each way on Roman Arch and Hard To Get

mystery trifecta boxed had: Elvstroem, Vinnie Roe and Media Puzzle!

Boxed trifecta with Makybe Diva, Vinnie Roe, Media Puzzle and Roman Arch. Close but not close enough.

:(

Media Puzzle started at about 20 to 1 and finished about quarter past four I reckon.

had $50 bucks on vinnie Roe for the win and was rubbing my hands together with joy once it started to come down. 1.4 seconds kicks the ********ing cat

But put $10 bucks on Makvbe Diva for a place. A return of $21.00 a bit of joy

I had Champagne the year that Might & Power nicked it at the post.

The joke from all my mates for a week was "in a split second your Nintendo 64 turned into a Commodore 64."

Oh well, as the cliché goes “there is always next year”

When from caviar to tuna.

picked up ON A JEUNE in a sweep. Was $85 to win so thought it was no hope but it ran surprisngly well, was around the mark at the start of the straight.

My dad and 3 other work people all chipped in $60 for a box 6 (i think its called tho im not sure).

They picked 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th. Didnt pick Zazzman. Would have paid $38,000 had it won. Pity that!

Had On a Jeune in a sweep....24 of us contribute $3 a fortnight - so it would have been worth $1,000

Boxed a trifecta with Makybe Diva / Media Puzzle / Pacific Dancer / Hugs Dancer.....

Put on a trifecta for my wife.....Makybe / Vinnie / Elvestrom / Distinction

thats 1st, 2nd, and 4th....close but no cigar........point is she wouldn't know a blinker from a handicap....but I suppose thats the fun of the Cup

Thankfully I had $5 each way on Makybe as a get out.... :p

All in all - a pointless exercise - :D

17 years in Australia and I have never picked the winner

My each way bet came eight.

I had Vinne and Maykbe in a trifecta but the third horse was She's Archie.

The Melbourne Cup always teaches me that gambling is for chumps!!

Had an each way bet on Makybe diva which won me enough to cover my stakes in box 5 and box 6 triffecta's. How the hell did Zanzzman get in there for a place. Have a race day at Morphy in a couple of weeks for a bucks show, looking forward to it.

Ive picked it twice. Back in 88 when Empire Rose won when i was about 7 and Dad used to get me to pick a horse in the big races and he'd put a dollar on for me. Only other time was Media Puzzle a couple of years ago.

I didn't win a cracker, but me missus won $1,000 in an office sweep.

Which means another grand worth of useless home accessories!

Same here :( even though i spent countless hours studying the form the best i could come up with was a 5th in Hugs Dancer.

Needless to say my better half fluked the quinella

Well, another year and nothing changed.
Had my very first bet in 1974. Myself and a few mates got told that if we wanted to have a bet we should bet on a horse that was called something or other big (we forgot the exact name).
We pooled our money, wagged school, went to the bookie shop and looked on the board till we found it. There it was, in white on black, clear as a bell.
Every year since it's been the same result.

Just for those that do not know it, Think Big won the 1974 Melbourne Cup.

However, bloody Big Angel came second last. :o

I thought it was Doreimus (sp?) who lost narrowly to M&P?

Here are my bets,

$5 on Makybe Diva for the win - Paid $22
$5 on Elvestroem for the win - finished 4th
$5 on Media Puzzle for a place - Don't know where it finished but was paying a 7/1 for it.

and my trifecta was, Elvestroem, Makybe Diva and Vinnie Roe Boxed

1st 2nd and 4th

Just missed it. Spewin!

Yeah, it was Doriemus 2nd in 97, Champagne 2nd in 98. Would you believe, both times they looked the likely winner close to home and both times someone in my family had bets on them to win only. Could have been a pretty huge payout if they had gotten over the line, but didnt even get the place dividend in the end.

Had Makybe Diva last year but went Elvstroem and Grey Song this year given the anticipated rain.

WOOOOO HOOOOO Go Makybe Diva!!!!
All I can say is Port Lincoln is partying hard tonight :D
Congratulations to Tony!!!
Yes I did have money on Makybe Diva.

Had $15 each way on Makybe Diva for a $97-50 return.

Put $5 each way on for the missus for a $32-50 return.

Lost $10 on a trifecta with 1st, 2nd 4th, 5th and 6th.

No 3rd unfortunately.

Still a good day for the household overall.

That's the last 3 cup winners in a row now. How sweet it is!!

I had Champagne that year too, but wasn't it Jezabeel who pipped it at the post.

And if I remember correctly, didn't Might & Power literally win by the length of the Flemington Straight. 5-6 lengths wasn't it, being the only horse ever to lead from start to finish?

Ahem...go over to the punting boards and you will see this little black crow crowing all over the place...

Watched Zazzman last MC day and kept an eye on it and put $10 E/W on it for a pay of $220 and also had $10 E/W on Makybe Diva for a $61 payout..

Oh and also boxed MD VR and Zazz in the tri ..twice...$5291 for a $116 spend
