Ports picks -

30 - Alan Obst - to me we have a big problem coming over the horizan in that we do not have a full back to replace wakelin when he retires. Thurstans is on the list for safety but I dont expect him to make the position his own. Obst has been playing as a forward for Central Districts but showed at the National Championships that he has potential to be a key defender. I feel he has the best ability to punch the ball in the marking contest out of all the potential full backs. Use of the football can be a worry but I have faith that this side of his game can be coached.
44 - I feel we lack some strong body 188cm types in our list and Stanley attacks the ball with purpose and show a fair amount of pace and ability. I think he could step into the vacancy that will be left by Michael Wilson in a couple of years.
57 - Lucas Markovic was a step away from my plan as a Full Forward was not on my agenda but I rank him in my top 10 (no one on here will agree with me) mainly because I feel he has the strongest contested mark in this draft. He also has an ability to jump off of the ground vertically when at the end of the lead (like roger luders used to do, and ablett but he aint that good). The only pllayer in this draft capable of being a 100 goal full forward. He was forced to play most of the year in ruck in the TAC.
70 - Leigh Adams - I wanted one midfielder, he has pace and size and is bottom aged and it looks as though he has improvement in him and some of the things he does just oozes class.
71- Brad Kelleher - another of the 188cm types that has speed and strength to play at either end of the ground. Gave Clark a bath at the championships. Could play the Bishop third tall defender and he is a dead eye ******** with his kicking.

11. Bulldogs - Beau Muston (Murray)
They ask 'why not Hughes?' The question they should ask is 'how significant is a knee reconstruction?'
If his injury turns out to be significant I might have thrown away a first round pick, if it's not, we've picked up the bargain of the draft. Before his knee this kid was pure gold. 188cm, quick, gets it heaps and uses it beautifully. Only managed 7 games before his injury but averaged 25 touches with just 5 ineffective kicks in total. Also kicked 13 goals and laid 37 tackles including 8 in one game. Without the injury he was top three.
Another reasons for not taking Hughes is that we don't desperately need another 18 yo forward, we have plenty (a 25 year old key forward is another matter entirely).
My final reason for not taking Hughes is every other phantom draft gave us Hughes so for me to do it as well would have just been too boring.
27. Bulldogs - Paul Bower (Peel)
Rocket made the comment on SEN the other day that he would like another defender. Williams looks good but I have little faith in Wight making it so we are a bit light on for developing defenders. I have only seen Bower the once at the Nationals but that day thought he played as well as Ryder or Kennedy and a lot better than Clarke. Very attacking and ended up AA CHB.
46. Bulldogs - Trent West (Gippsland)
We need another ruck in the wings for when Darcy gives it away. Minson will be good but Street struggles and Skipper's not big enough. 198cm but 90kg means he probably won't get any taller. I was a bit opportunistic taking West as I didn't think he would make it to 46. Hugh Minson sounded romantic but I've never been a fan of nepotism.
56. Bulldogs - James Wall (Calder)
A bollocks pick really because I'm a Podsiadly fan and would have taken him here but for the sake of the exercise I wanted to stick with the kids. Wall might end up another Cameron Wight. 198cm, as skinny as Wight and a top 10 in the 3km time trial at draft camp. Was named in the BP in the TAC team of the year but went forward and managed 18 goals as well including a couple of bags of 4. Pich hits in the ruck but would need some special West Coast vitamins before he could ruck in the AFL
68: Bulldogs - Nathan Lyons (Western Jets)
Local boy who is a dwarf (178cm) and skinny but real quick. Averaged 20 touches a game but only spent the 2nd half of the year in the midfield. Bottom age and we can afford for him to take some time.

To be honest I sat down and watched him again this morning and I was sitting in my chair scratching my head as to why I have him rated as high as I do. I think he is sitting that high purely on the fact he is playing senior WAFL football and certainly not from what I have seen. It is one ranking where I am giving in to popularity.

I couldn't agree with you more. The football enthusiasts deserve to know rischbieth is only 187 not 190 as listed at the carnival and that one of the proposed top 20 picks has a 20m time of 3.24.

I must say it has been fun going through the SA and Qld boys and downgrading their height although rischbieth is by far and away the most important adjustment.

Medical, pshyc and interviews should remain private.

45. Kangaroos – Travis Casserly - 184/76 (Swan Districts) – Right foot – draft camp - Very quick receiver ? of the football with good skills but needs to learn to find his own football and to stay in the game for longer periods. WING

Bulldogs - Trent West - 198/93 (Gippsland) – Right foot – Draft Camp – XXX for 20m is not a good sign but I am wondering if this is more to do with him not be fresh at draft camp, I would love to seem other test times. Good size to play as a strong ruckman and has enough presence around the ground. Gathers a reasonable amount of the ball and is ok at ground level as well as in the air. Of all the ruckmen in the draft he is the one closest to being physically ready. To succeed in ruck he will need to have a big leap and I am not sure that his leap is good enough. RUCK
47. Geelong - Sam Lonergan - 181/80 (Lauderdale) – State Screening – XXX for 20m was better than expected he needs to take advantage of this and break the lines more. All Australian U18 Interchange, 27 touches and 9 clearances against queensland. 5 goals in allies v vic game. In and under type but tends to burn the ball a bit too much. He is a very strong tackler and gets a great deal of joy from throwing them into the ground as hard as he can. Looks to have a strong upper body for his size. Appears to lack pace to break away from the packs. 7 VFL games/ 9 goals. MIDFIELDER
48. Adelaide - Matt Riggio - Bottom Aged - 188/82 (Peel) – Draft camp -
49. St. Kilda - Tim Looby - 187/89 (Murray) – Left foot – Draft Camp – Small hands XXX for 20m is a good plus for him. Rebounding defender with a long kick that penetrates quickly. He is big for his height but still appears to have a good turn of speed. His weakness appears to be his lack of ability to get a fist onto the ball in a marking contest. Looks dangerous when playing up forward and could well play as a forward flanker who links between defence and the forwards. Reminds one of Stewart Dew but not of his class.
50: Essendon – Matt White - 179/78 (calder) – right foot – state screening – 2.93 for 20m is better than I thought. Carries the ball when he gets it and tends to have a bounce and run 30 metres before kicking. He needs to be more accurate with his diposal.
51. Sydney - Ryan Cook -
52. C'Wood - Thomas Redden - 191/80 (Glenelg) – Right foot – State Screening – 3.15 20m, 66cm vertical leap. An ugly looking footballer who looks uncoordinated at times but covers the ground with speed and knows where to go to be in position to find the football. Reasonable skills and looks to have an upside. I however don’t like the way he carryies himself around the ground and the last person I saw carry themselves like that had his career cut short with a back injury. Playing reserves SANFL football WING / HBF
53. Melbourne - Matt Thomas - 184/81 (Sandringham) – Right foot – Draft camp – XXX for 20m may explain why he doesn’t hurt on the scoreboard more but his XXX for 3km is a good reward for his dedication. Nice solid athletic build but he is top age. He can find his way through traffic and his disposal is quite tidy. Finds his way through traffic quite nicely. I don’t think he will make it as a midfielder but he could be handy as a rebounding defender. Doesn’t hurt enough on the score board either. Often takes a long time after marks or free kicks to move the ball forward. He has scope for improvement as he does not have the ability to receive a lot of football. By all reports he is the next Craig Bradley as far as dedication to his body and fitness goes. HBF
54. Sydney - Daniel Dzufer -Bottom Aged – 189/80 (Caloundra QLD) – Left foot – Draft camp - rated highly but from what I saw he is either soft or lacks strength in the contest. I think it is more lack of strength of mind at the contest. He has good skill when in the open. WING

Port Adelaide – Lucas Markovic - 191/81 (Eastern Ranges) – state screening - strong overhead – has a big vertical leap and can leap straight up into the air at the end of a lead (a trait which Gary Ablett and Roger Luders had) which will enable him to protect the ball from defenders more as well as making it harder for him to be pushed under the ball. He kicked a couple of bags of goals to end the season before badly dislocating his ankle in the first game of the finals series which will be interesting how much it has mended by the time draft camp gets here, obviously not enough to do the tests. Played a lot of the year in ruck before being tried as a key forward later in the season and this is when people began to notice him. Even earlier in the year his marking ability stood out. He does not do much at ground level and will need to improve that part of his game. The only player in this draft who is capable of becoming a 100 goal full forward. The injury could see him slide down the list. TAC 9.2 kicks, 2.9 handballs, 12.1 disposals, 4.5 marks 1.1 goals

Kicks over 50m on his right boot when on the run. Looks strong in the contest and looks like the type who could explode from the pack and break the lines. TAC 11.8 kicks, 6.5 handballs, 18.3 disposals, 3.2 marks, 1.5 goals. CENTRE
