A p-plater borrowed his dad's Nissan GTR which he wasn't allowed to drive anyway, and hit a powerpole at 200km/h killing himself, a 33 year old friend who was in the front passenger seat, and the friend's 15 year old girlfriend who was 7 months pregnant. The 33 year old friend had spent most of the day playing Need For Speed Underground 2.

Completely disagree. The law is there to protect younger people as they dont have the maturity to protect themselves. A 15 year old girl doesnt know what she wants.... she's 15 ffs. She would have been 15 with a child and a life lost due to raising a child.

Yet 2 months later when she is 16 all of a sudden she has the maturity to not get pregnant? The mere fact she was able to get pregnant means her body was ready to have sex. Its a natural thing... and we can't stop nature deciding when is the right time. Only the morals of people decide when is the right time or not. The only thing I will say is that by being a 33 year old he is able to manipulate her mind into believing he loved her etc just so he can get her in the sack.. and maybe if she was 17 or 18 she might not have fallen for it.... but even then who is to say... Problem is you see your 13 year old daughter and you still see the baby that you have watched grown up... she will be 17 and you will still think of her as your baby... thats only natural. Basically, the age someone is allowed to have sex is 16. However at that age, they are only allowed to have sex with someone upto 10 years older than them. Once they reach 18 they are allowed to have sex with someone of any age. The law is there to protect people who otherwise may not have the maturity to protect themselves.

You said yourself that some girls at 15 feel sexually ready, yet does that mean they are a 'mature' person? With sex comes responsibilities and Im not sure a child would understand that. As above you stated you know 21 year olds who are maturelywise very young. What about 15 year olds who have the maturity of a 12 year old? The law is there to protect them.

The road rules and speed limits etc are not made to cater to the best cars with ABS brakes and best drivers on the road, theyre there to cater to the worst. They are not made for a Mercedes on a sunny day, they are made to meet the requirements of a Datsun 120Y in the wet. A similar situation applies to the above.

What's the other option? Have girls tested every 6 months to see if they are mature enough to have sex. That would make for an amusing situation.

If youre 18 youre allowed to drink alcohol. If youre 17 and 11 months youre not. Same goes with driving. There is no grey, it's the law.

In the same way if you are .05 you are safe, if you are .06 you are not. There has to be a line in the sand.

Basically why I'd be against any change. I have no confidence in the people charged with the protection of children in our society. Judges, priests, school administrators and cops seem to have a far higher percentage of paedophiles than the rest of the community. The thought of these people being allowed to essentially consent to minors having sex leaves me a little cold.

There's always grey areas with any law. And I don't think laws that apply to age limits should be as black and white as 15.9 is not ok, 16.0 is. Not to say that I think the 16 year old limit should change, but recognise that someone sleeping with a 15.9 year old in a relationship is in no way comparable to someone raping an 8 year old.
