Actually I started this because of a little disagreement with a mate of mine champ.

Also Bate finished 3rd in Melbournes B+F this year, is 20 and has played 33 games.

Paddy is 19 and a half and has played 30 games.

Who is better or who will be the better overall player? I think Bate is very handy but Ryder will eventually be able to hold down CHB or develop into one of the leagues best ruckmen. He will add intensity as he gains more and more confidence.

Currently Bate.

Honestly i believe Bate is and will be better. This is 1 kid who i think plays well above his years and will be a star! As for Ryder, well its typical essendon. I have never seen a player so rated for doing so little. If my memory serves me correctly these essendon supporters were talking up 1 kepler bradley in a similar way just a few years ago....

I am biased I know. BUT for someone so early into his career 'Master' has an impact on almost every game he plays. Paddy does have big wraps and may become a great player. But it's Bate for me.

"i feel insecure so ill make a thread about a top essendon player vsing an above average melbourne player
Bate, purely to piss you off

Probably Ryder over the course of the journey but I rather have Bate than Dowler has he been delisted yet? Just another first round draft pick stuff up by the hawks

Currently probably Bate, in a few years Ryder by the length of the Flemington straight.

Ryder is better. Can play in more positions and is better.
Bate has played in the middle, on the wing, at CHF, and on the forward flank. Where exactly has Ryder played? CHB and thats about it.
The raps might be there for him, but until he shows whether he's actually any good or not, its Bate by a mile ATM.
Bate has had a few big games where he's turned it on, has Ryder?
Another ridiculous statement by someone with no idea.

He has played up forward and in the ruck champ...:o

And how did he go? I havent seen him play in these positions so I honestly dont know.
Bate has played some really good games in the positions I have mentioned. There was even a few suggestions that he should become our permanent CHF.
Dont ge me wrong, I think Paddy will be a very good player, possibly even in the top ten, but until I see him him start to play a few really good games like Bate has done, then Bate is ahead of him fairly easily.

He was fairly good on the lead and showed the talent to play there, however he was a bit casual at times. After he gained the 1st step on the defender he slackened off and ended up having the ball punched away. His intensity will lift as he continues to build his fitness base and the confidence.

As a defender some fans underate his value fron opposing teams. He wasnt the stat gathering defender but was really good at getting a fist in with the body on body contests and on the lead. He had a few off games but thats expected of a player playing his 1st year down back. Has a lot of talent to work with and will be great to watch him develop.

if Paddy had kept up his ealy season form he would have won the rising star, i have no doubt about it, but as a 198 cm 2nd year player it was an almost impossible task

Bate is more versatile and harder at the ball. I think Ryder needs to be left in a position to develop but he seems to lack a bit of intesity at times.

Bate is a gun and a better player at the moment, and that's who I voted for. But Ryder has massive potential, and could certainly overtake him at some point in the next few years.
