I'd happily game on 1080p on the highest card purely for that extra fps on the same resolution (compared to a lower spec card).

On my older pc I used to game on lower resolutions for that extra fps boost (460ti-560ti era).

That said I currently do have it on 3840 x 2160 a lot lol.

im pretty sure there gets to a point that humans cant tell the difference between certain FPS points.

i mean do it if you want to but its alot of extra money to spend for literally zero to tiny gains

I've been able to get my 6900XT pulling close to 400W. Going to be interesting to see just what the nextgen cards will draw.

People are gonna need good cases/cooling.

yeah.

1000w PSUs will become te minimum IMO.

CPUs are only getting more and more juiced too.

wonder how high the requirements will actually end up being after all the talk. even back when i got my PC people were talking about the upcoming gtx980 debating how it would need x amount of power even saying to get 800w PSU to be safe but then when it came out turns out you could easily run it on 550w probably even 450w if you really wanted to lmao

i mean its hard to say until it all lands but GPUs and CPUs are certainly trending upwards in terms of power draw.

My 3080 is supposed to do up to 455w under load and surprisingly runs cooler than my previous 1080ti. Partly to do with better thermal design I imagine. I know smaller form cases are prone to being hot boxes on current gen but full size ATX builds should have no issues with cooling. I'm not buying the Fermi mkII talk yet. The same was said for Ampere and while they're more power hungry it never resulted in Fermi. Being on a smaller process Ada won't need as much juice but of course they'll push them harder to get a bigger performance uplift. Sounds like the next Navi will be the same. I'm not so concerned about the power draw but more so the prices. As the 4080 isn't due until next year there is a lot of water to go under the bridge. If Taiwan becomes Ukraine 2.0 then shit is going to hit the fan regarding TSMC not to mention all the other issues plaguing the west right now like inflation and supply chains.

Umm I got the 2080ti in 2020 and won't be upgrading a video card until I can be bothered getting a whole new pc.

I can tell the difference between less than 10 fps to over 200 :P

2080ti is still a beast of a card.

basically competes with a 3070ti.

There wouldn't be a game out for a significant period of time requiring an upgrade from a 2080

oh yeah i'm sure you can tell the difference between 160 and 170 fps lol..... I'm pretty sure there was a university study done like 10 years ago that confirmed human eyes can only process up to about 75FPS - anything more than that and our eyes literally cant process it to our brains quick enough.

Running high end cards in 1080p is completely useless except for bragging rights.

maybe monitors and advancements in refresh rates have changed that but i seriously doubt it.

And I will brag until the cows come home :P

I just think it's funny that a simple resolution change can boost the fps even with the same max graphical settings. Experimented with it in the NBA 2K10-12 days.

And yeah the 2080ti is going into my next pc(if I can ever decide what I want, still have my heart set on a small form factor design but that's almost impossible with my dream of the 2080ti AND a bluray burner in the one mini case).

I don't know that many people could pick between 155fps v 165fps in a straight comparison but you can definitely tell the big jumps 30 to 60 to 90 to 120 to 165

Was this a Ponds Institute study?

I can definitely notice the difference between 80fps and 120fps on numerous games.

not sure - can find it but not on my PC atm.

but id suggest your noticing refresh rates far more than just stand alone frames per second.

again study could be wrong, but I doubt paying an extra $1300 bucks for a gfx card justifies the minor benefit you get to FPS.

So my 4 days of solid use review of the AW3423DW.

It's everything it was hyped up to be to me. The HDR is amazing, in fact I'll say it's better than my C1 as being a Samsung panel and slightly different tech it actually achieves a higher peak brightness. The C1 is great for contrast which is typical for OLED but if I was to nitpick the one thing that bummed me about my previous B7 and now C1 is I wish they were just a tad brighter to let the highlights really pop. Watching HDR content like Netflix on the C1 it's no issue, but a few console games I actually had to disable HDR due to black crush and the bright parts not being clear enough. Since the AW3423DW is brighter it's not even an issue. There is an option for HDR400 and HDR1000. I've set it to HDR1000 like I've read everyone else do. All it does is allow peak brightness of 1000nits at a 2% window or something like that with a slightly more aggressive ABL. The ABL isn't distracting and I've so far only noticed it a couple times in Destiny opening my inventory after being in a really bright area. This is also why I installed Windows 11 just recently as I heard about its superior handling of HDR. I'm running auto HDR and HDR is just running 24/7 even on the desktop. I never experienced HDR in Windows 10 but I read many opinions that it was a bit washed out and didn't handle it well. I'm yet to try a game that doesn't support HDR but it's supposed to be like the Series X and handles it really well. So far the only games I've played are Destiny and Metro Exodus. Destiny has always been exceptionally optimised and it's pure eye candy in HDR. The different elemental explosions are colourful fireworks going off. Metro Exodus is a dreary game but things like your glowing compass and visibility indicator on your arm look like actual shining LEDs.

Is there fan noise? I don't know, I play with headphones. If there is it's quiter than my PC fans which I don't even hear because I'm wearing headphones.

Is the anti-glare coating noticeable? If you set the right conditions and look for it. Though OLEDs have never been recommended in bright environments or anywhere with direct light because they simply don't get as bright as other panel technologies. Where I game is ambient. There are downlights about 10m behind me and there are no reflections. During the day the blacks are still as deep and is actually less reflective than the C1.

Text clarity with the triangle orientation of the subpixels? When I first turned it on and got into Windows this is the first thing I looked for and spotted it. After about 10 minutes I stopped looking, forgot about it and it looks completely normal.

"ermagherd the stand is big". Yeah, it is, but so is the stand of my X34P. It's the same sized footprint, just slightly thicker feet. Seems pretty standard. If it's a problem get an arm.

I've bought expensive tech before that while I've been happy with the purchase I've felt that maybe it wasn't the best value. Not this time. This is worth every penny. For anyone else that doesn't mind dropping premium coin on premium gear I honestly recommend to do some of your own research on this monitor and give it consideration. If ultrawide isn't your thing then keep an eye out for when the Samsung QD-OLEDs start appearing in 16:9 versions. Otherwise I saw the 20% off deal is now available through the Dell website. Previously that price was only through their Ebay store with a discount code.

So my thoughts after nearly 3 months:

Still the greatest monitor I've ever had and is an absolute pleasure to use. Worth. Every. Cent.

Currently 25% off on the Dell site too

It was 20% off when I got it through their eBay store too. I'm surprised it has been on sale for so long considering the demand for it. Maybe it was to get in before the new Samsung monitors but it looks like Samsung may have misread the room on what people want.

dunno if i am missing something but that seems like alot of money for a non 4k screen.

Ahh its on sale. I was gonna say.

For 2.2k id be ripping this SAMSUNG | 49-inch Curved | G9 | Odyssey Monitor | Samsung Australia

The G9 is still an LED panel. The AW3423DW uses Samsung's latest l, never seen before and superior QD-OLED panel.

I nearly bought the G9 a while back but it was before the firmware update that caused issues with RTX 3000 series cards. Also already coming from a 21:9 monitor and having to deal with not 100% support in games I didn't want to know what 32:9 might be like. No way now Samsung can keep the G9 at that price for much longer.

Thought I remembered you built one a year or two ago, 3080 5900x.. I must be mistaken, would still be an upgrade on my 1060 1800x lol

Built it in November 2020, just in time for Cyberpunk. I was going skip a generation but with only the 4090 this year and the rest to follow next I'll probably just do a new build next year. I do roughly every 3 years anyway.
