Peoples thoughts on GRIGG

Edwards wasn't a top 20 pick in a super draft. So we really have nothing to lose with selecting him at 36 (from memory)

I've always been filthy on Carlton selecting Grigg because I thought he wasn't worthy of such a high selection. Grigg at 35 would have been a worthy selection.

Albert Proud, Hislop and Dawes should have been selected ahead of Grigg.

I hope i'm wrong though.

I did. Not top 50, but I stated who we should have picked up.

I still stay strong in saying that Jetta and Hampson would have been a better option than Grigg and Hampson. There is no doubt in my mind that Essendon would have overlooked Hampson.

Pfieffer is an absolute bargain buy. He could end up being one of our best players.

I'm sure there isn't, but quite frankly unless you are Dordoro you can't say that with any real authority. I'd back WH and our recruiting department in on that one. I wouldn't be surprised if WH rated Grigg above Jetta anyway, or it was that close it wasn't worth taking the risk on Hampson, I also think while Jetta is more likely to have more impressive singular games that Grigg is a better chance of a more consistent and sustained AFL career. Fact is we desperately needed a young ruckman on our list, over and above any other priority/player and IIRC Hampson was the next name on our best available list at 17 anyway.

Another if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle argument (which you seem to be very good at).....fact is with the Dawes draft we had JK on our list and the coaching staff were pleased with his progression......could not possibly have forseen the Judd trade happening to take a risk on a KPP with a dickie knee.

Besides, there are factors in recruiting that mug punters like you an I just aren't privvy to.........speaking with their junior coaches, family and the players themselves......psychological profiling is also becoming widespread. There is a lot that goes towards whether a kid is cut out for the AFL other than ability alone. Lots of kids with ability have gone on to not make it for other reasons and vice-versa......it is easy to be a hindsight recruiter based on our limited viewing of talent alone, but a lot more difficult to piece the big picture together.

In the past we all make wrong predictions on players, but from day one I thought JR was a pathetic decision. I remember almost kicking my PC when we selected him. I was so keen on Monfries! I watched a lot of U18 footy and I thought the kid was a ripper.

I'd have to agree with you on that point.

Robbie Tarrant from this year is a good case in point....on raw talent and his best TAC games alone, you would pick him top 5. But there are other factors which meant he ended up sliding to the teens. I can't comment on how he interviewed, but his second and third efforts were non-existent and he often went missing in the bigger matches.....also had quite a few ?? over his shoulders IIRC.......a pick that an RM could end up being drawn and quartered over, but if he gets it right then you have a bargain. I suspect there are some personality types/recruiter styles that lend themselves to taking risks like this.....probably also has to do with list balance and the stage of development your list is at. WIth us rebuilding, coupled with Hughes' recruitment style I suspect we have erred on the side of conservatism, going for the players who have good temperaments and work ethics, have leadership potential and are better chances at forging out consistent 100+ game careers.....if some of them over-achieve then this is a bonus. I think some posters when commenting on recruitment fail to take into accouunt our current rebuilding process. Perhaps in a few years time we will be in a better position to take some risks on your Dawes and Mustons with later picks ??

I learnt the hard way last year not to make calls too early on the kids, it is a long season and a lot can happen (Mitch Clark and Lance Franklin cases in point). However at this stage I would have Rich a tentative number 1 as well. I would have Naitanui 2 though.

I understand your thinking, but my problem with Naitanui is that he isn't a natural footballer. Don't get me wrong, the kid could be the greatest thing since naked chicks, but at this stage the out and out footballer in Rich looks the goods. A couple of KPP also look good at the top end.

You're absolutely right, he isn't a natural footballer but he seems to have a real competitive streak and hunger for the contest, similar to Kreuz. He is also hot property for the modern game. I would think that in a few years the dominant big men will be Leuey, Kreuzer and Naitanui.....(Hampson could be up there too). Goodes and Franklin are two other tall, athletic blokes that can take the game by the scruff. I think that stands Naitanui in good stead as hot property come draft time. Franklin aside he is probably the best athlete/size I have seen.

I'm not as sold on Grigg as many others on this site seem to be.

Sure, he shows some signs that he might be a handy player, but I am still yet to be convinced.

I really don't like how he is being played though. Moving Houlihan up the ground is a great idea and one that most of us have been calling for for a very long time. However, Grigg is not the player to replace him with.

When under pressure, he seems to panic a lot, and turnovers galore result. It may just be something that is frequent as a youngster, but realistically, if he is going to be effective in the sweeper position, it has to impove dramatically.

I think he'll make it, but I have serious doubts as to whether it's playing mainly out of the back half. I'd much rather see him develop on a wing or a forward flank.

I watched a Bullants practice match about this time last year, and he seriously got leather poisoning off HB. And his disposal was very very good that day.

I'm more than happy to give him time because, as I said, I think he'll make it. I'm just surprised at how many people seem to be getting a little carried away with him.

I wouldn't be playing him in round 1, I just don't think that he's good enough yet to warrant a game. I have him in my reserves for that game, but there are quite a few players I'd prefer in the side than him.

Having said that, we're playing Richmond after all so he might just get a game.
