THE CROWS will consider promoting rookie Jared Petrenko to the senior list following a second season-ending injury to forward Brett Burton.

Adelaide is yet to place anyone on its official long-term injury list, which the club is required to do before a rookie-listed replacement can be elevated.

The minimum stay for a player on the list is eight weeks, which means the Crows are likely to shift knee reconstruction victims Burton and Rhett Biglands onto it in the very near future.

A rookie can be elevated to the senior list at any stage during the season, provided the club has already named a player on its long-term injury list.

Petrenko has been the most impressive of the club’s four rookies, overcoming an off-season shoulder reconstruction to regain his spot in the Woodville-West Torrens line up.

The 18-year-old, who has played both in the midfield and defence, has featured regularly in the Eagles best players and Crows coach Neil Craig said he was impressed with his efforts.

"Jared’s been very good," he said. "Of all the rookies, he’s back playing at league level.

"There are two other rookies who have just started playing league in James Moss and Brodie Martin, but Jared has been playing league on a regular basis and is now playing very good SANFL footy.

"I like what I see on the training track. I like his attitude to the game and to training and there have been some big changes to that.

"He would be strongly considered if he continues that sort of form because we do have a spot available."

The Crows' fourth rookie, super athlete Ed Curnow, has been hamstrung by injury this year, but is back playing good football for Glenelg reserves.

Other Adelaide players to start their careers on the rookie list include Nathan Bock, Ben Rutten and Michael Doughty and Craig said any player elevated in the coming weeks was likely to play AFL this year.

"We won’t just put Jared up on the list for the sake of putting him on the list," Craig said.

"If we put him on the list, it means to our supporters and to ourselves that we’re seriously considering playing him."

Good to hear! He's been the only rookie at the main training sessions over the past couple of weeks, so I guess it was imminent :thumbsu:

Yeah, I've always had the feeling that it was going to be a case of when, rather than if.

Hopefully he puts in a good one on the weekend, as that'll put him right in the mix for the Sydney game.

Great news, let's hope it actually does happen because he deserves it and will be a gun. :thumbsu: Already one of my favourite players.

As for Craig, his quotes are always so cringeworthy, all the time it's training and effort. "There have been some big changes to that". So let me guess, at the start his training and attitude to training wasn't on? All he cares about is training. Should quit as head coach and become the head training guy.

Too bad he knows more about Football than you ever will.

The most significant part of that article i think was the last part... Where thety said that he would only be elevated if he was under serious consideration to play. On that surely he is the only one with any real chance of ebing elevated...

But who would NC take out... would be hard to see it happen this year...

But having said that surely himself Rodney and big Tex will be three very very nice inclusions to the side next year! gee the off season will be long this year.....

That's pretty par for course really. Essentially all the article is telling us is that Petrenko is close to selection.

i agree that he should not be the team coach but for differnet reasons. i belive he should not be because u never see adelaide come back from those games where u think they have not chance. like look what paul roos can do for sydeny. can make them win games which looks like they got no chance. i dont think he responds enough and does not do many big chances on feild. but anyway thats my opinon. hope petrenko makes the team

It's more a question of when rather than whether with Petrenko.

If the powers that be intend to play him this year, then he will be upgraded in that week, otherwise it will be left to year end.

But he will be upgraded.

Once again the club has shown that it thinks a little bit more long term than some clubs, by being prepared to rookie list a lad that wouldn't be able to play until half way though the year because of a significant operation to his shoulder.

As was the case with Dangerfield, the AFC has recognized the underlying talent of each lad and been prepared to take the longer term view.

Next year when these two are playing AFL along with Walker, we'll appreciate the fact that the club we support has vision. :thumbsu:

That’s what I said a few days ago macca, it is inevitable that he will be upgraded so we should just do it now. He should actually be playing this week so I’m not sure why it hasn’t been done already.

As for your comment about how the club has vision, it would be nice if we actually played someone ‘before their time’ for once. And I find it ironic the one time that we did, with Jacky, it was ridiculous because he wasn’t even having an impact in the SANFL. We are the most conservative club in the league seemingly incapable of taking risks.

We took a risk with Jacky.

Not just the one time Drummond.

We have done it 3 times this year - Jacky, Otten and Sellar - and each time it has been well before their time and each time the result is what??

Simply this - we have virtually played with a player short, because it WAS before their time and they were out of their depth. You mention Jacky, but he was the closest to doing something. Otten and Sellar were like startled rabbits in the headlights.

The club works with these players virtually every day of of the week and knows better than we do when they're ready to play AFL footy Drummond - why do you have trouble accepting that??

I can accept what your saying is the truth because as most can see that Jackie and Sellar are clearly not ready to play AFL football with how they play their SANFL football. However Andy Otten is quite regularly in the best player with South Adelaide, is the gap between playing in the SANFL and AFL that big or is it a Neil Craig thing by making younger player wait longer than they should?

I honestly don’t believe it’s a cultural thing at the football club because playing kids in the early 90’s was the back bone to the success we have had over the last 15 odd years.

If he (Andy Otten) is in South Adelaide’s best player’s week in, week out and still not deemed to be ready, what can be done? Is the gap between SANFL football and AFL that big? If it is, what can the AFC do to lessen the gap between the SANFL and the AFL to potentially fast track a younger player development?

Or is it Neil Craig’s refusals to play a teenager from any longer than 25% game time. I hope next year he takes a risk and plays a few kids before they are ready so they can be fast tracked at the AFL level. I don’t believe the SANFL will ever develop a player to dominate from the word go so having them wait will be a very long process.

The question though is what would have Otten produced in his fourth or fifth consecutive game?

We don't know. The club doesn't know. And it never will know with any young player because they aren't prepared to take a hit and back a youngster to find his feet.

It hasn't been done because they haven't selected him to play yet. It cost money to upgrade him along with a place on the list. If he was going to play this week he obviously should have been upgraded.

However, if we upgraded him this week with the view of him playing next week or in two weeks time and in the mean time playing for WWT he gets injured (touch wood he doesn't) it effectively means we've wasted money and a place on the list that may be needed for someone else (although this is unlikely, but why take the risk?) for reasons of pure symbolism.

I'm glad they took Petrenko, but they did give all the other clubs a chance given they didn't even pick him up until the rookie draft. More luck than good management IMO.

I have heard similar mail that Patrenko has already shown enough to convince the AFC that he will be added to our squad next year off the rookie list. My brother is an SANFL Eagles supporter and he was surprised that Patrenko wasn't nabbed with a late draft pick and was still there in the rookie draft and he told me last year after the rookie draft that the Crows had picked up a potential smokey with him. Hopefully his prediction is on the money

Given we didn't have first pick in the draft last year, every player we picked up could have been taken by another club

That he is on our list means that we got in before everyone else....

Even if Walker gets picked he'll spend most of the time on the pine I reckon. Happens all the time. We never give debutants much game time. Shows a lack of faith from the coaching staff...

As far as Petrenko's prospects from last year goes - I definitely had him going late in the draft. I was a big fan last year. There was one particular run he had in the Championships that had me taking down a heap of notes on him with exclamation marks and the lot. However, I can understand the reluctance from AFL clubs. Small frame, shoulder reco is not a good combo. There was an element of risk in taking him, evidentally no one was willing to take it and we reaped the benefits. Small blokes have their place in the AFL, but small blokes with a shoulder reco to their name (the part of the body I'd be most concerned about recurring injuries with such a light guy) is something to baulk at.

I'm glad it panned out the way it did for us. :D
