Yeah there was a fair bit of mail late re JDG. Most of the 'experts' assumed we would take Ellis at 2. Thomas was a bit of a surprise and Pendles was a bigger surprise. There was no noise about taking Pendlebury in the lead up, apart from one poster, whose name I can't recall, who called the Thomas/Pendlebury double on the morning of the draft.

Nah - there was a lot more noise about Pendles than that - days out there was the news that West Coast wanted him at 13 but that we were tight in the mix

The night before the draft they asked Hine about Ellis and he was super evasive saying “I guess we’ll find out tomorrow “

I remember wanting Ellis at 2 and Pendles at 5 - so goes to show how hit and miss we are on here

Why do you think Coffields defensive game is an issue? Most bio's say he is fine and uses his speed well defensively. He's had some nice scalps like Fogarty.

Tackling and pressure game is weak.

Freo won’t take Naughton. They delisted defenders because they were surplus in the role so they won’t blow a top pick on an overstocked position.

They’ll take Brayshaw or Fogarty, or Cerra in the unlikely event he slips through. They need to bolster their midfield stocks.

Is that really an issue if as a defender you beat your man one-on-one? Some of the best rebounders have low tackle numbers. If he wasn't a good kick I'd say yeah sure, but he's the bloke you want with the ball rather than getting in and tackling. Still averaged a couple per game. Not a huge tackler yeah but I think with his game style it won't be an issue.

Our ancestors demand it

If I'm honest Stephenson is the one I want the most if he's still available but any of him, Cerra, Coffield, Fogarty, Naughton or Bonar will leave me feeling content.

Now watch Derek pick someone else.

Dont get the love here for Stephenson, reminds me of Cale Morton. Tall and lanky and not overly clean. We would be better served by using Crisp in the team over Stephenson. No doubt we will get a top pick as a slider.

Fox Footy’s phantom AFL draft 2017: How the first round could play out on draft night

(No way we let Cerra get to 7)

PICK 6: COLLINGWOOD — AARON NAUGHTON

Clubs: Peel/Western Australia

Position: Key Defender

Size: 194cm, 84kg

Bio: One of the most promising key defenders in this year’s draft pool, Naughton played a huge role in a Western Australian side that exceeded expectations in the Champs. At 194cm, Naughton is a solid lockdown defender, a good leader and has also shown glimpses of his ability to provide some dash on the rebound. He’s got an awkward kicking action, but he cracked Peel Thunder’s senior WAFL side and ended the season with seven games to his name. He averaged 13.9 disposals and 6.9 marks per game in the WAFL.

Why: The Pies rate Naughton highly and would love for him to slip beyond the Dockers to Pick 6. And the feeling is mutual. He is a lifelong Pies fan, having moved to WA from Victoria as a young boy. He would bolster an undersized backline. Nathan Murphy has been linked to the Pies, who could also eye off Brayshaw or Nick Coffield should they still be available.

We will take Cerra if he falls to 6, seems to be the popular opinion of most draft experts.

But will he make it to 6? If he does I have no problem with us taking another mid, because he to put it simply has the potential to be an absolutely elite AFL mid.

Also shows our approach though, we will take the best player left at 6 (according to Hine's rankings anyway), not so much about position, height etc.

I have my Doubts Cerra will get there. Hearing Carlton are BIG fans of Him.

IF we go with yet another Mid we pretty much go tall with our 3rd Round Picks

Heard a bit of this for a while now. If he’s gone I think it will be out of Naughton, Murphy and Coffield.

Cerra is a high ceiling player, the knock is his speed which is not great for us, and his injuries.

Now I think about it, a slower injury prone player sounds just like us! :p

That what it Sounds Like at the Moment. Though been a bit of talk we could take Brayshaw

They should check their list again... Johnson already 33 yrs, 2 kids with a handful of games and another one that didn't play all season... Hamling is about the only one you'd have any confidence in

https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/tp-fremantle-dockers?year=2018&sby=7

Hamling a very solid contributor and Alex Pearce was developing extremely well before injury. Griffin Logue is the Michael Johnson successor - he’s a great stopper and is versatile so they can play with those three every week. They don’t need to use a top pick on a defender.

Are we picking him up to be a rebounding defender though? Crisp and ideally Scharenberg/Langdon give that.

All ifs and buts though, forget Johnson if you are working toward a premiership window and sans Hamling who knows? Naughton is walk in according to the experts... in fact I'm starting to come around to him, we are going to sell the farm for Lynch but maybe this guy is just as important to our backline

It’s important to remember that if Lynch becomes a Magpie, this may be our only first round pick until 2020 and by then, our only one in six years so I’m praying Dekka doesn’t pull one of his fancy specials out of his ass and just plays it cool by selecting a prospect with a great chance at making it, not a high risk/high reward type. I think the recruiters realise how important this pick is as well, considering the stance that Pick 6 wasn’t on the table. If it ain’t Naughton, I hope it’s Brayshaw or Fogarty.

Freo still looking for a Pavlich Replacement and Forgarty could be that

Amazing how Brander has vaporised on a lot of phantoms and been replaced with Naughton in the last month.

Brander doesn’t even feature in their top 18!

Could get Brander at 38 how far he is Falling;)

Unless of course he pulls another Pendles out of his ass.

Of course the board will lose it’s collective shit while the kid develops.

But yeah.. I want a bloke who’s gonna chalk up a Rising Star nom early in the year for once, not another speculative potential based pick.

Get it done Dekka.

Having a Top 10 Pick will help unless we Pick Murphy or Richards at 6;)
