Nothing "just" in the Australian Football Entertainment League. As Vince McMahon conceded 20 years ago, this is revenue making entertainment folks. I accepted that the AFL crossed the rubicon years ago, and i'm talking 100 years ago. It's never been just.

The GC def needed help, they would have got it last year if the pesky Blues weren't "deserving" of it too. We all know that. But i'm for them getting it and us not. We can help ourselves, and we have. GC are just a 9th weekly game. They need help to be somewhat competitive.

I understand that the lack of transparency may have always been there, but how did clubs not rise against this?
Never before has a club been gifted so much, so quickly and so easily.

What if GC somehow become competitive.....really competitive......Repeat premiership competitive. What will the football world say then?
Granted Gold Coast lost some quality players but they were already well compensated for that bringing in King, Lukosius and Rankine last year.
They also brought in 4 top ten players in 2016, therefore it's quite possible and even maybe likely that they've access to ten top ten players in 4 years.
What then if GWS fail and drop to the bottom of the table? We run this cycle again?

Gold Coast do have a problem but the AFL aren't working to fix the problem but rather make more problems for other clubs equally deserving.

Harks , Eddie McGuire has openly trumpeted his mantra re everyone involved in AFL football many a time.

Just don’t rock the boat
Keep your snout in the trough
There’s heaps of 💰💰💰in this game for all of us.

And that is what those involved in the industry largely do and really, why wouldn’t they.
I have a good mate who is a leading presenter/commentator in the sports media in Melbourne town.
During the * drugs debacle, I asked him why don’t the media stop protecting * and tip the bloody bucket on them.
He simply replied :
I’ve got a wife, kids and a mortgage ...

I hear you and we know how it works and unfortunately integrity takes a back seat to the dollar.....as per your example.

This is how things work and why in life, people don't care to seek facts but side with whatever keeps them warm and comfortable.
Governments know this, Institutions know this and as sure as hell, the AFL know this......until one day.....maybe?

Isn't their assistance/priority pick package reviewed on an year by year basis? Correct me if I am wrong, but if the Suns somehow have a Lions like miracle season on 2020, they won't get their extra first round pick.

The AFL is just assuming (if not banking) on the Suns being dog **** for the next for years. And there is no reason Gold Coast to actually bother to improve on field and get more wins assuming what I believe is true..

It's like the AFL are actively encouraging the Suns to tank with this 'rescue package'

I do think the Blame should lie squarely with the AFL and Gil the Dill rather than Gold Coast though, Gil will realize his folly sooner rather than later (but by then, the damage is done)

Really losing a lot of passion for the game (not the club) i grew up with.

Lukosius and BKing showed plenty in their short time this year and Rankine didn't even front up for injury
Brodie was a little slow on the uptake and Wright didn't have the best of years........but somehow all these factors had no influence on the AFL throwing as much as possible to the GC after affording them a couple of State League players last year. The math does not work.

I’m just not sure where he fits into the backline in the future and that’s why I don’t think he should come into consideration when we are rating Ash without even considering his injury history. Ash will be asked to play on the smalls, especially early on in his career, I don’t think this will be Williamson’s go. With Doc and Newman turning 27 next year by the time they are nearing the end Ash will be ready to take more responsibility and more of a rebounding role.
Writing off Doc and Newman a little? Plenty to happen in 4 or 5 years they have left. I can see us needing to wheel Doc out before he finishes up given his last two years.

Stephens, Kemp or Robertson in that order for mine.

You would think that the "what if" possibilities are being discuss atm between clubs; as 5 mins on the night for live trading is only long enough for go or no go decisions, plus paperworks
Agreed. I remember listening to an interview with SOS earlier this year where he said the pick swap with Adelaide had been established prior to draft night just in case ‘the player we wanted (Stocker)’ was still available.

5 minutes is not enough time to imagine and enact the convoluted deals the LMs come up with. To be a fly on the wall hey!

Lukosius, King, Rankine, Brodie, Ainsworth, Brodie, Ballard, Fiorini, Wright, Weller, Macpherson and Pick 1 is a brilliant start. Adding 2,11,20 and a free hit at academy players is absurd.

The handout package in time will be seen as a ridiculous overkill and if they have any brains up there (after the Martin fiasco I’m not sure) they’ll trade those picks before the AFL realise it.

Every Blues fan should be cut about this decision, but as was mentioned we can help ourselves, they can not.

It’s certainly more corporate than it was in the good old days. AFL execs put themselves between a rock and a hard place with GCS. On the one hand, they have dived head first into the Gold Coast over a sustained period of time so they can’t be seen to fail at this stage in the timeline. Thus, do what you can to prop them up: draft picks, financial support, key staff members.

On the other hand, they could let them be more self sufficient and see them go under as another failed Gold Coast experiment and become the next instalment in the vacuum that is the sporting ecosystem, something the execs simply cannot allow to happen. Thus, they have to prop them up.

What is the right thing to do?

To me, give them on going soft cap allowances and draw the line now. Sink or swim. If this was enough time for GWS to build a culture, it’s enough time for GCS. No more draft concessions, get your **** together and build a winning culture to keep players at the club and sustain success. They have failed to build once, this is it...

Wowee, just read on the AFL site that Dougal Howard got lapped by the top 2 in the Saints 3km time trial, doesn’t say much for his endurance or the program at Port if that is the case, Saints would have to be disappointed with that result.

Was he using Cam Wood as his pacesetter?

Not at all I was making the point that is how long it could take Ash to be ready for their role. It took Doc 5 years and Newman 8 to become capable. We also don’t really have anyone outside of our two number one picks in Walsh and Weitering really exceeding expectations early in their career so I’m not expecting him to

Fair enough. Happy to take him, kind of have my uneducated heart set on Stephens, Kemp or Robertson.

Has it been confirmed it's able to be traded at this stage? Given the tentative nature of the concessions year-to-year, I'd imagine that was one of the first things nixed.

The afl only outlaws things AFTER someone has someone has done something the afl disapproves of.

They never close off the loopholes ahead of time....

...or old Percy....still love the story how he caught the tram down Royal Pde during a training run around Princes Park...apparently nearly got away with it too, but our fitness adviser spotted him getting off the tram.

The AFL is not a real thing. Nor is Carlton. Nor is GC. Nor are concepts like ‘justice’. All of these things are fabrications of the human mind. All help survival. Hence why they persist.

Go Blues. Cheers

If none of this is real, my mind must be F'd up to come up with the end to the GC match in round 4 this year... 😭

We have bucket loads of wings -

there's plenty worse than longthinmissile......

Poster provides a lot of great content, but is also one of the more obstinate that has graced this glorious club page. Admire the willingness to defend one's views, though...
