Ok, so the ashes are now over.

Pick your alltime best squad (from players you have seen) to tour to England for a fully fledged ashes series.

Keep your squads to 17 and pick your starting XI for the first test with remaining 6 squad members. Also state when you started watching cricket.

From 1979 onwards:

M.Hayden
M.Hussey
R.Ponting
G.Chappell
A.Border
S.Waugh
A.Gilchrist
S.Warne
J.Gillespie
D.Lillee
G.McGrath

J.Langer (reserve opening batsman)
M.Clarke (reserve middle order batsman)
I.Healy (reserve wicketkeeper)
S.MacGill (reserve spinner)
T.Alderman (reserve quick) ashes gun in england :-)
J.Thomson (reserve quick) - was past his best come 1979 but i did see him play

I didn't pick an allrounder for a number of reasons - Gilchrist factor, waugh, chappell, even border and clarke can roll the arm over and warne and gillespie are no mugs with the bat.
Hussey can also cover the middle order batting in need. Didn't take an offie or a left arm quick with me.

This side would be hard to beat against most teams I would've thought.

Apologies to a number of players who I won't mention because no doubt others will.

Ok, who's next ?

Don't think Gillespie warrants a spot, averaged near 34 with the ball in England and was absolutely horrendous in the infamous '05 series.

Was a gun before he broke his leg. Was never the same afterwards.

Memory extends back to 96 ish

Hayden
Taylor*
Ponting
Clarke
S.Waugh
Hussey
Gilchrist
Warne
Harris
D. Fleming
McGrath

J.Langer (Reserve top order)
M.Waugh (reserve middle order)
I.Healy (reserve Keeper)
S. MacGill (reserve spinner)
J.Gillespie (reserve quick)
P. Siddle (reserve quick)

Fleming is a bold call as he never played a test in England that I can recall, but he goes in because he can swing it, and it compliments the two other hit the deck bowlers extremely well.
Dizzy had one good series in England, Harris hasn't had a bad series ever, since this is a hypothetical, you assume a fit Ryan Harris, and a fit Ryan Harris picks himself, as do pretty much the rest of them

Can remember from the mid 80s on.

- Taylor
- Langer
- Boon
- Jones
- Border
- S. Waugh
- Gilchrist
- Warne
- Hughes
- Alderman
- McGrath

- Clarke
- M. Waugh
- Healy
- McDermott
- Harris
- MacGill

Due to only seeing the tail end of his career, when no where near as good as earlier on I have discounted Jeff Thompson. On the other hand, G Chappell, Lillee and Marsh are in contention despite retiring earlier because they were still great towards the end.

1 M Taylor (vc)
2 Langer
3 Ponting
4 G Chappell
5 Border (c)
6 S Waugh
7 Healy
8 Warne
9 Lillee
10 McGrath
11 Alderman

Hayden, K Hughes, MacGill, McDermott, R Marsh, Reid

This is done in a few minutes, will have many players forgotten, and therefore subject to change.

Greg Chappell's last tour of England was 1977.

1 Hayden
2 Langer
3 Ponting
4 G Chappelli
6 S.Waugh (c)
6 Border (vc)
7 Gilchrist
8 Warne
9 Lillee
10 Reid
11 McGrath

Boonie
D. Jones
M Hussey
.Gillespie
Harris
T Aldermann/Mcdermott/Merv Hughes

Gosh hard to toss up between border and S.waugh as captain. If they were all the same age, I'd go s.waugh because he executed teams.
haydo's, averaged about 50.
langer a career in two parts, opening seemed to average about 50, middle/lower batsman about 40.
the middle order is hard as nails and played against better attacks than we have now against us.

Bowling, just squeezed Reid in ahead of Harris, although aldermann against england was irrepressable and dizzy 250 wickets at almost nothing.

Would back this team against most anything in history that doesn't include the Don.

There is a certain all-rounder who averaged 25.9 with the ball in England alongside a very handy 37 with the bat (2 hundreds)...and he is yet to make any list in this thread. For shame.

not sure marcus north gonna make too many teams here....... those matches in england included the tests v pakistan.

he's there to pick for anyone if they dare.

If gilchrist was injured I would fly out healy. I know swampy has a great reputation but i just prefer heal's.
McGill would be the obvious choice as the other spinner too should warne be injured.
Boonie can take the gloves in an emergency, and well, you could do worse than picking 4 pacemen out of this lot.
As for picking an all rounder, you are looking at a batting line up that averages close to 400 and bowling line up that gets them out for less than 250....

I do hope Pattinson or cummins is the 'next best thing' preferably both of them.

I do miss it when our most rubbish bowler was brett lee (mcgrath, dizzy and warne, and the rubbish bowler was averaging 30 and bowling at 150km/hr :( :( )

From early 90's onwards

Elliott
Rogers
Hodge
Jones
White
McDonald
Wade
Warne
Reiffel
Siddle
Fleming

Maxwell, McGain, Berry (He toured as backup keeper so can again), M.Hughes, Pattinson, Miller

That side would beat all :) Although been a bit short on batsmen last 20 years...
