Simply select the most likely 15 for your this summer's ODI's and your best XI.

Australia

1. Hayden
2. Watson
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Symonds
6. M Hussey
7. Haddin

10. Johnson
11. Bracken

Balanced attack - 7 potential bowling options.
-------------
12. White - spin option as an all rounder, could take Hopes' spot on spinning wickets.
13. Clark - likely back up quick if one goes down. Will have stiff competition from Geeves and Hilfenhaus.
14. D Hussey - back up batsman, ahead of Voges.
15. Marsh - back up opener if Hayden or Watson struggle. Ahead of Quiney.

1.) Marsh
2.) Ronchi
3.) Ponting
4.) Clarke
5.) Symonds
6.) D Hussey
7.) M Hussey
8.) Watson
9.) Lee
10.) Johnson
11.) Bracken

White, Hopes, Henriques as back ups. Need to inject some youth before it is too late!!!!

I reckon it pretty much picks itself these days.

The top seven doesn't really need to be discussed, does it?

The only persistent question is whether we pick a specialist spinner as the fourth bowler.

If not, which quick gets the nod? Tait? Clark? Hopes?

I'd like to see Tait recalled.

When will it be "too late"? What will happen once the time runs out?

We don't need to inject youth at all.

The vast majority of our senior players should be able to stick around until the next World Cup. Hayden is the only one who is a definite no-no.

And, for the record, I reckon you're one bowling option short.

Its pretty clear Siddle is in the selectors thinking....
Sure, and maybe he'll get recalled.

But I think we need to get another look at Krejza.

Presumably, we'll be playing a specialist spinner in the Ashes. Are we going to go to England with our spinners still an unknown quantity?

7. Haddin
8-11 - 4 of Hopes, Lee, Bracken, Johnson and Tait. Even rotate them.
13. White

- In terms of spinners, they'll probably call White one and name him.
- I don't see a ODI future for Clark or Hodge.
- It's unlikely, but not unfeasible that they'd make one of those tough calls on Hayden and dump him for Marsh.
- D.Hussey, Marsh, Voges also in the mix.

They won't pick 15 for a domestic series, be 13 or maybe 14.

Your getting totally off-topic :p

You bring up a good point though, who do people see as the 1 day spinner? Krejza? or will we stick with part timers?

Yeah - you're right.

Wrong thread.

I thought I was discussing the side for the first Test against the Proteas.

My mistake.

Regarding Siddle and the ODI side, surely Tait is in the mix. In terms of spinners, Aaron Heal has gone OK for WA this season.

Hayden
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Symonds
Hussey
Haddin
Lee
Johnson
Bracken
Tait

That's the main XI

The rest:
D.Hussey
Hopes
Marsh
Heal/Doherty

Does anyone else think that Matthew Hayden might be cooked as a ODI player ?

I just think the selectors might look to bring in some new players, and Hayden is the logical player to be retired. Dont think we lose too much with him not playing ODI's - and a solid break might just help him get to South Africa then on to England for the Ashes.

The way Hayden reacted when he got out and the way he was playing i think he might be about to call it quits.

So i think the XI will be:

Marsh
Watson
Ponting
Symonds
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Heal/Hauritz
Lee
Johnson
Bracken

12 - Heal/Hauritz
13 - Hopes
14 - Clark
15 - Ronchi/Paine or even Warner after his monster ton against Tassie even though it was on a rather small ground and he isn't a keeper.

I'd have pretty much the same squad except i'd have Siddle there instead of Marsh. Heal would be my spinner of choice.

Yeah, if there was another spot i'd have put Siddle in. He could very well end up being selected.

Heal would easily be my spinner choice also but i reckon the selectors will call upon Doherty.

Marsh
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Symonds
Mussey
Dussey
Haddin
Lee
Bracken
Tait

Ronchi
White
Hopes
Geeves

I've left Johnson out as I think the time has come for quicks to only be considered in 2 forms of the game. I know the selectors haven't worked out that Twenty20 and ODI are different games yet so it won't happen, but that's the reason. Geeves gets the reserve's spot ahead of Siddle and Magoffin. Noffke's back's ****ed.

Toss up between Hopes, White and Dussey for the number 7/8 spot but with Watson and Symonds as the 4th and 5th bowlers I went with the best batsman.

Hayden won't be around for the World Cup, there's nothing to be gained by bringing him back in. 50/50 whether the selectors will be prepared to make that call.

Specialist spinners are far less important in ODI cricket. Better off telling them all to concentrate on their 4 day bowling and stop worrying about being tidy one day bowlers.

aussie selectors are clowns, there are any no of aussie cricketers who have played a match or two and done well yet they never played again, some of the relatively younger first class cricketers that fall into that category are hilfy, voges, cosgrove, noffke, i hope they play in the future

It probably helps when you're getting a game for your state. I know he played one game but he made a duck.

When should these guys have played?

Are they best XI?

Who would you like to see dropped to accommodate these players?

Cosgrove - no, can't get a game for SA and is not committed enough sadly, has plenty of talent.

Voges - playing well in one day domestic cricket, horribly in four day game. Only one ODI appearance however you feel D Hussey will get ever oppurtunity to establish himself as back up batsman.

Noffke - unlucky to play only one ODI and might have missed the boat now.

Hilfenhaus - still relatively young for a fast bowler, plenty of upside. Best chance of the lot to play in the next 12 months.

1. Hayden
2. Marsh
3. Ponting*
4. Clarke
5. Symonds
6. M Hussey
7. Watson
8. Haddin+
9. Lee
10. Johnson
11. Bracken
-------------
12. Clark
13. D Hussey
14. Hopes
15. Ronchi
16. Hauritz

Obviously one has to drop out of that group, methinks Haydos is going to hang up the pads in the coming weeks and that would resolve the issue, Ronchi/D.Hussey comes in with a straight swap or Hopes goes to number 7 and Watson opens. If Hayden doesn't retire then one would think that Ronchi would be the man to miss the final cut.
