With Bird, Moore, and Jack stepping up this season, what players do we have
in the ressies, that can step up this season,if we cop a few injuries?

an enviable list
makes a mockery of all those dismissive, often very rude comments from non-swans about us having no young talent, an ageing list and a grim few years ahead
and that's not including senior players such as fosdike, davis, mathews and crouch (if and when they're fit - physically AND mentally, davo)

In terms of THIS season, I doubt many of those are ready to make any significant contribution.

Brennan could step in and fill a hole. We know what we'll get with him but he's not going to step up and make the current team any better.

Vez looks to have the most natural talent of the players on that list (certainly the smaller ones) but I doubt his body is going to stand up long enough this season for him to get fit enough. He's been in and out of the side and now has a groin injury. That suggests it would be foolish to push him too far too quickly.

Laidlaw looks physically ready to make an impact but his hammies aren't helping his cause. If he can get himself right, he might be a chance to do something later in the year.

White probably needs more time, though I don't think he'd let himself down if he came in for another game or two later in the year.

The rest need more time. Clearly the club sees something in Smith and I think he has the makings of a terrific player. He needs another pre-season, at least, to build some bulk before he's capable of being any more than a bit part player. O'Dwyer has shown real improvement this year but I'm not convinced he's polished enough yet. Similarly Bruce has shown he's a real goer -reminds me of O'Keefe in many ways- but needs time. Faulks and Currie - not this year. DOK and Terlich haven't shown anything yet to suggest they'll become senior players, though with DOK I think it is at least partly about his body and getting some confidence in that.

So in terms of 2008, I reckon only Brennan (plus Davis and Mathews) represent real depth, maybe Laidlaw later in the year. The rest are WIPs.

If the Swans suddenly get lots of serious injuries to key players (im talking St Kilda level injuries) then you can bet that Paul Roos would seriously consider using all those players i listed.

i agree
and to be honest, liz's post seemed like a giant wet blanket
since saturday, for the first time since early 06, i feel really optimistic about the team, like we've really got something to look forward to
yes, a lot of those young blokes aren't ready, and won;t be ready, but if, as you suggest, we're forced by a chronic injury run into playing one or two of them, i'm all for it

i don't think anyone's talking about all, or even any of these players being ready
but they're all coming along nicely, if reports are true, and certainly we've all seen a few of them and they've done okay
this seems an unnecessarily negative post
it's back to the idea of bringing in players who are past it or not as good as many in the list ahead of them

I reckon your spot on Rancid, this is now a very exciting period coming up for the bloods,it's just a pity the ressies arn't in a state based comp where they would be tested every week. But wherever their playing its looking good for the future

i'm not letting you drag me into the ressies debate

but as i've said far too many times, bringing mathews or crouch in, and maybe even davo now, would be a step backward for a team going forward much quicker than i'd even dreamed

Similarly Bruce has shown he's a real goer -reminds me of O'Keefe in many ways- but needs time.

Strong overhead mark, good stamina, easy to alternate between attacking and defensive and can kick goals pretty well ?

Well, from what I've seen anyway :)

The opening statement of this thread was which players are ready to step up this season if we get injuries. The question raised wasn't about the longer term prospects of the developing youngsters on our list, some of whom I am very excited about (as I have often posted).

The reality is that most of those players listed do not represent genuine depth for us this season if we see ourselves as a top 4 team. That doesn't mean it's doom and gloom. We still have Davis, Kennelly and Hall to inject back into Saturday's side, and maybe Fosdike too if his knee injury isn't that bad. But throwing Currie or Faulks into the team now - if we're forced to - isn't going to help us retain our spot as one of the better teams in the competiton, and isn't going to help them much either, I suspect.

I see that as realism, not negativity. And it is a short term view only. Assuming injuries don't intervene, Vez, Murphy and Currie have already shown enough to suggest they will become damn fine players, Laidlaw looks like he will be solid at worst, plus White, Smith, O'Dwyer and Bruce in particular are showing very encouraging signs. Plus we've yet to see Meredith get into his stride, and Thornton was showing every sign of being ready to step up during the pre-season. But that's the future. Not 2008.

Yep, pretty much. And just his approach to the game - gut busting running all match long from one end to the other. Indeed, he's probably playing far more like O'Keefe now than O'Keefe was at that age.

okay, fair enough
but if we had sucha spate of injuries that forced us to go this deep into our reserves, we're probly not going to be a top four side anyway
but what i meant was that in terms of need, if we HAD to throw in say a vez or o'dwyer or DOK, not all three in the one game but just one of them surely we could carry them like we seem to be carrying a 60-70 per cent malch at the moment
i agree, longer term, we're looking darn good

Real pity to hear about DOK, was really hoping to see him this year. All the hype around this kid and weve seen nuda..
What complications/injuries is he having? Anyone know? Anyway it seemed that 06 provided some real good draft picks and im hanging to see our top pick.
Reminds me of the debate around our possible picks, one springs to mind, Mitch Clarke. Been watching him come on for the Lions, looks real good.

No pun itended, but thanks for the prospective player run-down RUNVS & Liz,

I was wondering how our other "irish project" player Murphy is progressing. From the posts I have read, you both seem pretty astute in judging player performance/development.

Could you give us any idea whether or not you think Roosie might give him a taste of AFL footy before this year is out ???

Oooh! Murphy is one many, many reserves watchers are particularly excited off. Great run and poise and he gets his teammates riled up pretty well too. It won't be his year this year, but we've seen him in the bests more than a couple of times so far, so a definite for next year possibly.

veszpermi: he was listed as a few weeks and they kept comin down, i believe it got down to 2-3 weeks and now he is listed as indefinate. has be got the dreaded OP?

I sincerely hope not, but I'll try and find out because from what I saw of him, I want to see more. Maybe he's just in the early stages where with rest you can bounce back relatively quickly ?

I am waiting for Laidlaw, Veszpremi, Murphy, Smith and Dan O'Keefe. It also appears the Faulks can play so I am waiting for him too. I am patient. If I can wait 4 seasons for Moore I can wait the same for the above.

I can't wait to see Laidlaw back in the seniors. Thought he was fantastic against that cats last season.
