If Brown played for a Vic team, he would be a media colossus, that he is as feted as he is playing for an interstate based team just underlines what the footy public think of him.

There is a very good argument to be mounted that he is/was a media colossus (I've just sat down to watch Fox Footy's Round Table and how many appearances on the Footy Show?) and that playing for Brisbane helped more than hindered here. If he had played for Carlton or Collingwood, he belongs to one set of fans, but as a player for the inoffensive Brisbane Lion he belonged to all Victorians. The HOF Tribute match probably brought a tear to the eye of all Vics to see him in the Big V. Anyway, don't disagree with much of you've said, but you have to understand with lists like these, higher rating of Brown almost always tends to go hand-in-hand with under rating Tredrea.

They certainly try and make him look like one.

Fee-fi-fo-fum.

Jesus I can't stand Dermott Brereton,he's either A)scared of the threat of us or B) just flat out hates us for whatever reason.

Even J Browns leadership was overrated. I remember him wearing a mic during a game and all he did was grumble a few noises like some Neanderthal.
I think that's very, very wrong and at best uninformed and disrespectful, there is a reason he was Captain in the last Victorian State of Origin team, I suggest you look up what the term leadership is or perhaps go and listen to your coaches thoughts on it.

I wasn't there for that mark he took. But can one mark really motivate or inspire a team to a win a flag mid-season?
It was late season - you had to be there to see the impact it had on the team, was like they all got a jolt and the switch was flicked - it was the catalyst - I'm not the only one who thinks that.

He was captain of the Vic team because of his media profile.

Do you think Andrew McLeod was the best captain outside Victoria at the time? Do you think he was the best leader? Was he a better captain than Pavlich, Enright, Goodwin or Kirk?

It's this. Last pre-season he was saying how he would be on us for 2015. But now that his beloved Hawks have a chance of creating history, Port is seen as the enemy. I want to drink the tears of unfathomable sadness from those glassy, drug filled eyes.

In a similar vein to why everyone loved Richo.

He never, ever bothered anyone when it matters.

Very true I remember those words. What's he saying now?

Look i think Brown probably was a good captain. However my "uninformed" opinion is that Tredrea, Pavlich and Riewoldt were all better players and captains.

He wasn't the number 1 Lions forward in 2003. Lynch was way, way ahead and Bradshaw kicked more goals than Brown, albeit in a few more games.

In 2003 and 2004 he was 4th in the Lions goalkicking. He wasn't the leading man by any stretch. Brown was a part of those flags, but he was the 3rd tall up forward. Using them to justify his hype is ridiculous. He didn't even finish top 2 in the Lions goalkicking until 2006.

I'm happy to concede that Brown wasn't a poor captain despite his team's fortunes, but people can't have it both ways.

Either the team is separate to the individual, in which case you can discount his 3 flags when judging him as a player because he wasn't important to them, or team success is really important, in which case he was wildly successful early in his career but woefully unsuccessful as a leader and captain.
But his swagger...you forgot his swagger and deep voice

I get why Tredrea and Pavlich get underrated in this discussion but how on earth does Riewoldt not get the kudos he deserves? Has been in the top 5 key forwards in the game for over a decade, which is astonishing and probably unrivaled in the history of the game.

St. Kilda

If they had snatched a premiership when they had the chance, Riewoldt's standing would be vastly different today.

Riewoldt gets a flag and surely he's top 10

I don't disagree but that's pretty unfair really.
It is what it is - someone pointed out before how low Hird and Buckley were rated by the fan poll. People let their bias dictate how they rate a player far too strongly.

People sometimes point to Riewoldt not performing well in big games, but that's a load of rubbish IMO. He played a very good game in the drawn GF, but Collingwood mauled them in the midfield in the replay. In 2009 conditions were such that no key forward was going to have a big impact on the game stats wise. He's won them plenty of finals over the stretch as well.

Pavlich seems to be respected more of the two for some reason, I think somebody hit the nail on the head earlier though with this in that it's a lot easier to appreciate a player when you aren't fearful they're going to ruin your sides shot at a flag.

LOl Bigfooty is fan, the annual pre season debate of the modern time forward :)

There is no right answer except for Tredrea is the BEST. I long for the day of our next SUPERSTAR forward, they are so exciting. No offensive to our current forwards
