I think this issue deserves a stand alone thread to discuss.

Q. Can I move players in my team between positions? They were available in multiple positions when I bought them...
A. YES! In 2010, the players you have selected who are available in multiple, matching positions may now be substituted between positions. Simply click the Substitution button - any players available for substitution in another position will be highlighted in the same way as your Reserves bench.

Considering this new rule, to what extent will you be loading up on players with more than one position? Whether you like the new rule or not, this will definitely come in handy for people with injury/selection crises throughout the season.

Will this impact the way in which you select your initial team?

Is there any chance of someone posting a list of every dual position player?

Its kind of useless unless one of your dual-positional players goes down (in which case a like-for-like swap is possible). However, if I have a FWD only player who gets injured and have a FWD/DEF player who I want to substitute for him, it won't work.

Seems like laziness on the part of virtual sports not to come up with a complete solution for this.

Fortunately most of my defenders and forwards that I have picked also have mid eligibility (by coincidence). In previous years I have never been short of midfield cover, so selecting a single MID/DEF and/or a MID/FWD in my midfield will probably cover my back and/or forward lines in case of injury (to perhaps 60% of my forwards/backs), as I will likely have midfield cover most of the time.

At the moment I have 1 MID/FWD in my midfield, but can't choose another midfielder I'm willing to drop for a MID/DEF. So only a slight increase in forward cover for now.

Interesting twist... My opinion is not fully formed yet, but I don't think it will have any baring on my initial team selection. When I think about it... over the last few years I would have only needed to use this move a very small amount of times.

It does however give certain players the edge when you cant split them on any other factors. (often you will be in this situation when deciding which 2 game rookie to pick)

PETRIE might be handy to have in the forward line, but as I said you don't want to let this new rule consume you as there is a chance you might not even need to use the move

I think its a good idea. We are going to need it next season anyway. I think if you put a little bit thought into it you could find you can use it to your advantage in certain areas of your team.

I'm going to use it to some extent but not go overboard. In fact I don't think i'll pick any players I wouldn't have picked regardless.

To this end, there will be no ruck-forward, ruck-defender, defender-forwards in my side as there are no guns available.

But there could be some value in the centre-forward and centre-defender doubles. I was going to pick Hodge and Goddard down back. Might pick one in the middle now for flexibility. The problem is you don't want to overuse it and miss out on gun mids.

This might be a bit long, but here's a list of just the dual position players

If someone wants to edit it to fit better, go ahead.....

This is an interesting development and i imagine it could be used to some advantage this year but wont make or break many teams. It does change the setup of the game though and could have a far greater impact next year as a means of cover when teams have a bye. Consistency will be of greater importance and the big scoring mids might not compensate for the extra zero scores.
Unless they come up with some other means of combatting the bye. Theories?

I am not going to base everything on it but it is useful.

The other thing to consider are swapping rookies to have back up on bench. For example Davis and A. Moore. If one is named then can choose which postion they are emergency for (which will be good for injured players in Sunday teams)

Well I'm not gonna build my side around the feature but it is a nice option. Right now all my mids are single types but I have 3 F/M in my forward line but I'm happy with them there so I'm not gonna let it upset my structure. But the way it see it helping me is by watching other sides load up on dual types whilst I pick the strongest side I can.

I guess the thing to weigh up is if you can save getting a zero by using this option , will it be enough to cover the loss of points from choosing a dual position player instead of a single position gun player as you could be saving the trade you may make to cover it

Not only will it save you zeros, but even if you wouldn't cop a zero, its still useful to get a few more points out of your team if you get an injury.

For example:

In your midfield you have Goodes and on the bench Martin and Trengove
In your forwards you have Chapman, Higgins, OKeefe and Dangerfield (for example) who are all mid-eligible. And on the bench Gumbleton and some other cheap forward who isn't playing.

If you get an injury to one of those named forwards, under the previous system you would have Gumby as emergency and likely get 30-50 pts out of him.

However, swap Goodes into your forward line for the injured player and the injured player now in your midfield has Trengove or Martin for cover who will probably get between 60 and 90.

You've just gained yourself about 35 extra points for that week and probably for several weeks given the duration of the injuries.

Depending on the durability of your players you'll probably sub in a forward emergency 5-10 times throughout the season as various players get injuries, so thats about 175-350 extra pts.

To address your concern of picking a midfielder who might average better, if you took Goodes over a midfielder who averages 5 ppg more, thats 5x22=110 points you miss out on. But add back the 175-350 points you make up and that 65-240 points you get back over the duration of a season.

Given the amount of genuine MID/FWD prospects, I'd say most teams will have 3-4 MID/FWDS in their forward line. I currently have 4.

Ive survived this long without it, and cant forsee myself using it this year.

Im not going to compromise the tactics that ive always used. Filling the midfield with midfield only players, and filling the rest of my side with midfielders that come under defender/forward qualification.

I may try and use a defender/forward combination though. :thumbsu:

After the events of last year where I was trying to cover for multiple zeros in both forwards and backs each week, having the extra cover is going to be more valuable than getting an extra 5-10 pts a week from a dedicated midfielder. besides that goddard and goodes are just as good as most other midfielders you care to choose, and ive still managed to squeeze in another captain option into my midfield.

I finished last year with Liam Anthony tearing it up on my midfield bench whilst I copped a zero in the forward line. To have the flexibility to flip some players around would make the world of difference in some situations.

With this feature, you could select a side so that, say, Paul Chapman's zero in your forward line (due to his round 18 hamstring tradition) could be dumped to the midfield and a Goodes or Brent Harvey could be thrown forward and your superior midfield cover comes in.

Sure, it's not necessarily going to help you, but the potential to be the difference maker come finals time is very high, in my opinion.

I don't think it will make a whole heap of difference in the early rounds where most of your side is fit and secure so the need for MPP isn't that great but by the end of year bringing them in could add a fair bit of diversity especially as we will know which MPP are tearing it up.

Good point, but later in the season it could be harder to bring them in your side, especially if they are tearing it up. Easier to bring in a fallen gun at a later stage of the season.

Although, if a MPP like goddard or goodes drops in price, you're laughing. Given Goddard's shortened pre-season, he could definitely be a midfield upgrade target if he starts slowly.

Some interesting points.

To be honest thought, I think it's a bit of a red herring. Essentially, the benefit only comes in if one of the MPPs is injured (because the move cannot be done with SPPs) and basically it's like a lottery trying to predict who might get injured and what other decent selections you can make in order to allow for swaps whilst not compromising the overall quality of your team. Perhaps it is simply better to choose players who are less injury prone, or be conservative enough with trades so that you can make them when it really counts.

Likewise, the success of swapping players is also contingent on having good emergencies, if you can afford them. For instance:

* I have Chapman in the forward line who gets injured (and no decent emergency coverage)
* I swap Goodes from the midfield for Chapman
* I still need a good emergency in the midfield to cover for Chapman (the move is virtually pointless unless this is the case)

Therefore, if you're trying to set it up to allow a FWD/MID swap, then you need to have at least one good emergency in each of these areas to allow for a swap either way to be worthwhile. The more MPP swaps that you try to rig up, the more coverage you need in emergencies (basically at least one in each area if you want full flexibility). Some people might prefer to choose cheaper rookies who are less likely to play in order to afford more expensive starting-22 players as opposed to trying to select MPP with good emergency coverage. Mind you, if you're lucky enough to choose good emergencies across your team, you may not even need to use the MPPs to cover for injuries/suspensions anyway. So, I think it's 6 of one, half-a-dozen of the other.

Ultimately, if injuries strike badly enough (more likely than not!), then MPPs probably aren't going to save you anyway and you'll still most likely have to resort to trades.

So, I think that whilst the capacity to move players from one spot to the other could be useful (particularly late in the season to cover injuries in finals or if/when you're out of trades), it's still more important to try to get coverage from choosing some good emergencies and trading conservatively during the year.

It seems to be harder this year to select decent emergencies due to different price brackets.

I thought the whole idea of Supercoach is to pick all the top midfielders for your forward line? SO far I have Goodes, Chapman, Pavlich and Dangerfield in my forward line and I don't have any duel position midfielders in my midfield.

Midfeild never seems to be the problem with me as far as injuries go as I usually always have good bench players, its the forwards and back that drive me nuts and the rucks to a lesser extent. I would love to load up on some forward/back duel position players but the problem is there really isn't any good ones and the one good one that is there is injured .ie. Waite. :o

Tippet looks like a must have I reckon so you can use him forward/ruck. I'd say he's the handiest duel position player going around in Supecoach and I have him in my squad as a ruck but may start him as a forward and bring Coxy into the squad. :)

yeh im just choosing the team like I normaly would. I didnt really like any of the guys that can switch+JM point above.

I can see it being useful later in the season like when you are downgrading a cash cow for a rookie that can swap positions to cover an injury.

I think the dual positioning is great. My intention when selecting my squad was to pick the best at price. Then with a little bit of a tinker I have coverage in all areas bar forward/defender. Will come in handy towards the middle of the year, maybe earlier, but at that stage it will come at the cost of a trade and a possible price rise
I'm willing to give it a go, it doesn't hinder the strength of my side, and covers possible 0's. The only thing that may need tinkering is the reserves after NAB Cup to complment my selections.
If it's a success how popular will it be next year. I'm not missing the boat

Stocka's found part of the trap, but the whole trap is even worse. In order to take advantage of this "feature", you need two dual-position players. From the FAQ:

A: By popular request, we've updated SuperCoach in 2010 to allow for more flexibility. If you have a Forward who was selectable as a Defender AND a Defender originally also available as a Forward, you may now SUBSTITUTE the two between positions, without costing you a trade.

So you need a FWD/BAC playing in the backs, and a FWD/BAC playing in the forwards, then you can swap them. Perhaps you'd be able to do three-way FWD/MID + MID/BAC + BAC/FWD but I wouldn't count on them being that clever in the GUI. I thought Kurt Tippett (RUC/FWD) was a must-have until I realised this limitation.

I thought Kurt Tippett (RUC/FWD) was a must-have until I realised this limitation.

To some extent he is because of the existance of Lobbe (PA) who's a bottom priced RUC/FWD that can sit in Ruck 4 and swap with Tippett.
