Im same as you Wahooti......on the MTB that is. When I took off OS last year for 4 months, I needed cash so sold a lot of my belongings. Had an '07 Giant TCR C1 roadie which I sadly bid aurevoir too. I still have a '98 steel-framed Giant Iguana SE MTB tho. I kept it as the amount I would get for it wasnt worth the trouble and I wanted to get back onto something decent and cheaply when I got back...............I was riding it the very next day.

Im looking at grabbing something when I get back from OS again in October. manufacturers will be releasing their 2012 models then too so a good time to buy a brand spanking new off the production floor model, or the existing 2011 models which the shops will be discounting to move.

Despite only getting by on the MTB (without the treads), I've still been logging all my rides on www.strava.com. For any rider who hasnt discovered this yet, it's a fairly good website to compare your rides with those of your mates, training partners or club mates, or just others in your city who ride the same roads in the area. Comparing can get quite addictive, but it's a great motivator too. Can get started with as little as an iphone or android and app and will sync your rides to the website. Otherwise, you can download from various Garmin GPS computers.

The nicest bikes I have ever seen up close are two handmade Tommasinis owned by a friend. They are both in immaculate condition and I shudder to think what he paid for them.

The same guy also owns two Bianchis. All four are set up slightly differently for different types of races (he does crits, longer road races and also triathlons) and all are absolutely beautiful.

And they're only his bikes for competition. He has a couple of training/commuting bikes and an MTB as well.

This is what I was thinking; get a 2011 model just as 2012 are coming out.

And here she is:

With SRAM Force, FSA BB30 cranks and chain rings.

Will be looking at getting some wheels for some (hopefully) interstate crits as these are just trainers and will cope with the k's.

The Giant Cross City I posted before is pretty great value at $700. Been putting about 250km a week on it with my commute for the last six months, sometimes hilly terrain, and its been fantastic.

Not sure if that's a bit on the cheap side for you though.

Caesar - I rode a similar bike (and similar distance p/w) on a daily basis for over six months. The bike weighed at approximately 13kgs.

When I switched to a bike that weighed approx. 9kg, it made bike riding much more pleasurable.

New cockpit (Oval A921's google them and drool) added to the P3

Yeah, that is what my friend has got(brought it for over a $1000 though). im looking at roughly the same price. From what the net says, its better to go more expensive rather than be cheap??

Since this is my first bike since childhood, i dont know if i should go road or flat bar road/hybrid. also dont know if i can actually ride the thing since it has been so long. Will be usually it for fitness and fun on the roads here.

will either get the Avanti Sprint (2010), which is a Road bike, or a Giant Cross City 2(2011), which is a flat bar road bike. Any advice on which one to get?? Does racing handle bars make the bike hard to handle for a newbie or is it the way to go?? any advice would be appreciated.

Won't make it harder. Are you mainly using the bike for commuting? If so go the flat bar option.

Cheers. Riding for fitness on local bike paths and roads. I dont plan to commute using the bike. So basically, it is just a comfort choice. I guess my best bet is to test both positions at the bike store and see what the difference is. whatever handle bar i do try will feel funny after so long without a bike.:o

probably will go for the drop bars though, as it reduced in price more than the Cross City.

i think the flat bars make it a bit easier to use. At least initially. You also feel more protected on a flat bar and I think it's because your hands still have a bit of handlebar on the sides.

You feel (and go) quicker on a road bike, but a flat bar is more comfortable as mentioned.

I'd start with a flat bar, see how you go and how much you use it, and then upgrade later.

Cheers guys. In the end, i got the Giant Cross City 2, the flat bar bike, as they didnt have the Sprint in the store. went for my first ride for ages just then, and apart from the sore hands from gripping the handle bars a bit tight, and having trouble changing gears(which i will learn once i get on a flat course), it went alright. got to get a bit my more balanced though, as i still dont have the greatest control.

Will be getting some gloves to hopefully help the handle bar problem.
