Had an bit of an discussion with a few people from work yesterday about who the greatest player has been to play for the Sydney Swans (Not South Melbourne).

Personally I said Goodes (Just ahead of Kelly, O'Loughlin and Jude) this drew an interesting reaction from the others as they all said they would struggle to rate O'Loughlin in the top 10 players to play for Sydney.

I understand that he was a little injury prone at times but he played over 300 games for us, won a best and fairest and finished runner up two other times, Named at full forward in the Indigenous team of the century, leading goal kicker on a few occasions, state of origin player and a premiership player...

I would rate O'Loughlin's achievements as the equal as anybody who has played for the Sydney Swans, Am I overrating him or are the others just idiots?

If you were picking a forward line with the criteria being: the absolute best available who had played a game for Sydney, would O'Loughlin make the team?

Lockett and Hall as the 2 key forwards, and you'd take Franklin ahead of him in a heartbeat without thinking twice. The fact he played 300 games for this club and Franklin has played 17 doesn't change the fact that one is a better player than the other. O'Loughlin's greatest ever haul for the Swans was 53 goals, Franklin will go past that in his first season and is a chance to win the Coleman, plus lays twice as many tackles and is more dangerous around the ground.

Maybe you can make an argument for taking O'Loughlin as a 4th 189cm+ forward but Punts would say we are too tall. This hypothetical side also sees Warwick Capper fail to get a spot, despite averaging almost 3 goals a game across his career.

If thats the criteria you would be picking some very shit players for our club based on their success at their pervious or next clubs. These teams should ONLY be picked on what a player does while they are at Sydney and therefore....

....Franklin hasn't done enough for the club yet to earn a spot in such a team, his history at Hawthorn can't come into it.

Did I question those two?? No, but a little point - Lockett won the Brownlow at St Kilda and not with us "hardly a Sydney Swans achievement" is it?

Based on goals sure, but I don't buy the idea that O'Loughlin's 1998 season is any worse than Franklin's season this year.

It's funny how players with career longevity sometimes lose a bit of their lustre in the last straight. We're seeing it a bit with Goodes and Judd this year. Two of the modern greats become taken for granted as they wind down.

MOL can claim to have done about as much as any player to build this club. Awesome talent. He had some faults, sure. But if he'd played in VIC he probably would have earned a Michael Long style awe from the pundits.

Those Norm Smiths awarded to losers are usually just despised by their recipients anyway and end up getting get chucked in the Yarra don't they? Unless you're Gaz in '89 nothing warrants it imho. Just sucks the joy out of it.
