Just wondering what peoples views are regarding the possible list changes for 2011. There is obviously conflicting views regarding the ratings of several players on our list (i.e. Hogan, Djerrkura ;)) so thought that we may have a range of differing opinions as to how we may look next year. Who we retain, who gets delisted, who gets traded, who goes to GC ().

For me I reckon the following may occur:

Leaving: Ablett (GC), Milburn (ret), Gamble (delisted), Laidler (delisted)

Also possible that Rooke may retire.

New: Pods (elevated rookie), A.Varcoe (elevated rookie), 2 new draftees,

If Rooke retires I can also see Allwright being elevated as well.

Both Hogan and Djerrkura are safe. West may be traded.

moving to QLD to collect woodenspoons Ablett
possible retirement Milburn,Rooke,Ottens [might if we win the GF],Mooney [see Ottens]
trade or delist West,Gamble,Djerrkura,Laidler
rookie upgrade Pods

* Does A Varcoe need to be upgraded as he's been on the list for 2 years ?
* What's the go with Ranga. Can he still be rookied next year ?
* upgrade B Johnson if Moons retires, although I guess he could still play seniors next season while still a rookie

Re: List changes for 2011

Out: Milburn, Ablett, West, Gamble
Upgrade: Podsiadly

Every team is obliged to take three draft selections AFAIK.

Premiership-quality midfield depth is legendary but directly below that is thin.
Current Mids: Ablett, Bartel, Ling, Selwood, Corey, Kelly
Mid/Forward: Chapman, Stokes, T Varcoe

Next Up Mids: Hogan, Djerrkura, Christensen
Mid/Forward: Duncan, Menzel

So the proven talent does not run as deeply as we'd like to think. Would make sense to keep Djerrkura for that reason. And don't think the rookies are setting the world alight ('part from Pods). West is unlucky but with four other ruckmen is surplus.

Re: List changes for 2011

Considering Djerrkura is the only one of the 4 we got in the '06 draft currently not getting a game (Hawkins is in when fit), Geelong will probably look to trade him or delist him. Sad considering his talent, and his terrible run with injuries, but they can't all be winners. Gamble and West you'd expect will go too, not sure what the club thinks of Laidler. There may be a mini cleanout at the top end too, as stated Milburn is pretty much done. Might be Marcus Drum's time to shine because he'll be gone at the end of next year if not.

Re: List changes for 2011

Suprised to see Gamble as a delist option - surely you'd wrangle a 3rd, or maybe even 2nd round pick for him? Not sure how old he is, but thought 22 or so, and has shown previously he can play at this level, and play relatively well.

Has he been injured this year? Or are there other reasons to his non-selection?

Re: List changes for 2011

I suspect that DJ will ask to be traded if his card hasn’t been stamped. He won’t have a problem finding another home and will be an asset to wherever he ends up - which I reckon will be Hawthorn. And it might be in his best interests move on.

Gamble, West and Hogan have had ample opportunity to prove their worth and we should see what they are worth in the market place. Unfortunately I think father time has caught up with Maxie. I hope we can get another year out of Corey but that is problematic. Laidler is worth holding onto.

he's not getting picked because he is a deadset hack

Re: List changes for 2011

Milburn still doing a good job isn't he? I feel he will go another season but if Cats win Premiership maybe a different story.

He's played a couple of games and been an emergency for probably 8-10 others. The problem is that he's been used as a defender this year,a role which nobody has ever seen him play before [including VFL games] and he's stunk at it.Maybe if he played his normal role up forward he'd be okay.As a defender he makes Shoenmaker [sp?] look like a bloody legend.

Didn't someone on here report that he'd signed with North Shore in the GFL for next year?

I think it was only a rumour at this stage

Re: List changes for 2011

This looks about right to me.

Someone else suggested 7 or 8 players could go.
I can't see it as this isn't the draft to be making wholesale changes.

Retirements will be what impacts us this year.
Eg. If 4 retire + Ablett goes I can't see anyone being delisted. Even Gamble.

Re: List changes for 2011

I know we have to delist a certain amount of players each season so obviously there will be changes.

However as this year will quite thin for GFC being at the top of the tree when it comes to the draft this year - it comes to my mind that we might need to trade players to get draft picks or players from other clubs more so than usual.

I suspect other clubs know we have a pretty good system and maybe at the right price be willing to trade. GFC premiership window is open now and for 2-3 years to come. So topping up with a player or two from another club could be an ok option.

If this were to happen - then quite a few second tier players could be on the line at GFC. I think you could consider the following players as possible trade bait -

Taylor Hunt, Gamble, Laidler, DJ, West and Hogan. Cannot see Geelong offering a regular senior player up for trade as this would cause internal problems I suspect.

I thought Milburn's career was over at seasons end but he is still playing well and is durable. So who knows.

As far as Mooney and Scarlett go - they will hang around IMO. They get paid well, are in a great team and seem to enjoy their footy. So I suspect they will be there for 2011 season.

In fact I cannot see anyone retiring. Maybe Milburn and maybe Wojo will get forced out (but he is playing ok) - but that would be it. And Rooke I fear will also go due to injury. Pods has sort of already taken his forward position.

So I do not see major changes - of course accepting the Ablett situation. I hope if this occurred GFC would then do what is best for the club - sign up our other good players and then go out get a decent player in return for Gary's loss - especially as we should have some salary cap space from his absence.

I would hate to lose Ablett full stop - but to get nothing really in return would be even a greater tragedy.

Re: List changes for 2011

I reckon someone should retire at season's end or we face the prospect of replacing a whole heap of players at once. Things don't look good for Rooke and Milburn as has been said above is probably done. I hope all is not lost for Corey though who is one of my favouite Cats. :(

REB

I keep thinking this as well - but then I remember its all about Premierships and GFC has an opportunity now and in the few seasons ahead to win another one.

So given that situation - just choose the best players to play that day - to get us into another GF, even if it means not playing a few younger guys.

We can worry about giving younger guys opportunities after the window has closed.

Having said that I think that Mitch Duncan might just force his way into side next year - and that would be fine also.

Just 1 more Premiership please. Then I will start getting greedy !

I could live with some failure for a few years after a winning 3 Premierships !

Re: List changes for 2011

i reckon ottens will retire, his body's just about gone

I tend to look at it the other way - he has had so much time away from the rigours of footy over the past 2 years his body should be good for another 2 seasons - if well looked after.

Only time will tell - but his injuries do not seem to indicate he has any significant injury that he could not get over - like perhaps Max Rooke's degenerative knee concerns.

Perhaps I am just an optimist ? and besides we are due for some good news on the injury front.

Re: List changes for 2011

Hard to know without knowing how many of the 30 + guys will retire (which I think will be influenced by whether we win the flag or not).

One thing I am certain of is that we will prob take 3 ND picks, so we need to make 4 senior list spots (including Pods). The interesting thing will be how many rookie picks we want and therefore how many rookies, if any, we elevate (besides Pods).

Obviously Gamble West and DJ will be the most in danger, I'd fling Gamble first because his performances have been the worst, I'd be inclined to keep West a) because he's playing well and b) i think ottens may retire and so i want to have 4 ruckmen on the list. DJ I'm 50-50 on.

rookies can stay for a third year but it's their choice....ie they can accept our 3rd yr contract, or go in the draft and try to get on a senior list. I hope we keep all 3 for a 3rd year.

Re: List changes for 2011

Scarlett is our 2nd oldest player. He must be weighing up his options as well.

Wojcinski is another one with a question mark over him. Think he signed a one year contract didn't he?

Yes.

Wojo is interesting because body health wise, he's the one of our 30 + players most prepared to go on, but he's the only one not guaranteed to not end up in the vfl at some stage if he plays on, which I think will weigh heavily on his mind.

Re: List changes for 2011

face facts, he's 34, we have salary cap problems, and he's clogging up the vets list. He will have to retire because he won't be offered another contract. I know that sounds harsh because he's been a great servant, but these are the business decisions you have to make under the salary cap model.

The Cats may want to hang on to Wojac due to Ablett's departure. We will be short of our two best run and carry players if both depart.

Re: List changes for 2011

the list changes for next year we be left till gazz makes his mind up,there are up to 9 players l think, inc wojo that could be affected either way.l think there could be a few hang up there boots "IF" the boys win this years flag.
