Potential Midfield recruits with 2nd pick

Are we definitely picking a midfielder with our 2nd round pick?
IF we pick up Moloney and Goddard (Caddy unlikely) would we still need to draft one?
Goddard would release Myers and Heppell (which he already is) into the midfield, and we still have Kav and Merret developing.

Seeing as it is likely we might be trading a KPD and might be Fletcher's last season, would it be possible we would look to draft a KPD?
No. Not at all.

I don't think we've got 1 bleeding gaping hole, rather 5-6 areas we need to bolster and a couple imminent.
That may change, completely.

It'll depend on who we delist; how many & what picks we end up with after trade week; and who we trade out/in & lose/gain to FA.
If we don't land anyone significant, we need to get a midfielder ASAP. If we do get one/both of the older blokes, we've a bit more freedom to look at small forwards & backs & tall backs & a Hille replacement etc etc etc

Ive been a massive Graham fan for quite some weeks now, hopefully he is available at pick 32. I expect Hrovat to be available or go around 32 massive ball accumulator has had a great champs and TAC season. Gets to more contest than any other draftee really, will be interesting to see his testing - his size limits his upside (Blair, Colyer).

Josh Simpson should be available and hes an electric outside type with a long kick. Neade, Barry could be X factor types from NT that could suit. A.Carter is a real leader type think Conca will play down back first and has the ability to probably play on small forwards early in his career than develop into an inside mid.

Also wont surprise me to see B.Kennedy slip whether it will be far enough im not sure. Menzels injury how far will he slip, id hope we wouldnt pass at 32 if available. R.Atkins is another good midfield type that will be around our pick. Not a massive Colquohn fan reminds me of a David Teague and cant see him becoming a midfielder only a back but a rally good defensive one at AFL level.

Lonergan and Broomhead also other mid types that Knightmare ect have going around our pick. No nothing about them but i like what is said about Broomhead in the mocks. Lonergan is the best player from Tasmania this year and they always seem to go well.

Just a few names.

I'd pass on Menzel even if available. Too much of a risk even for pick 32. He had LARS surgery as a 17yo and has now done his knee again. He's an undoubted talent but he is a huge injury risk. Right now we need to minimise risk with our first 2 draft picks at least. If he's available late in the draft I'd have a look though.

I disagree. Menzel had LARS but he returned very well and had some outstanding performances through the U18 carnival. I think the Reward outways the Risk to much at pick 32. It would also depend on who else may be available i mean id probably pick Graham over Menzel if both were available. Menzel injured his other knee and it was only a slight PCL injury. I cant remember who but some AFL player played with some PCL injury this year (not sure if it was Pav). Its only a 6-8 week injury. For me Menzel is also exactly what we need hes very capable as an onballer but also an extremely effective forward.

I know people hate picking flankers but he isnt just a flanker and with Monfries a good chance to leave. Reimers no good. Colyer very questionable. Jetta has concerns and Davey not long left in his career i think we lack a half forward capable of rotating alot into the guts. Zaharakis was that man but he is now required further up the ground. NOB has potential but is still only a few games into his career. So a goal kicking mid is priority and one that is very capable of starting their career more forward.

Haynes is another potential prospect had a pretty poor year but probably would have gone top 15-20 last year. Hes a dashing outside player and i think getting Kav and Merrett last year means he probably isnt required, but another prospect that was highly touted just a year ago, many had him as a top 10 for this draft at the start of the season.

any chance Josh Simpson, East Fremantle could drop to 32? but anyway Menzel is one of the puzzles of this draft. He got nine-goals against Tasmania didnt he? and didnt he also get another six against the Northern Territory?, he strong overhead and gets to the right positions inside attacking 50, does anyone know if he quick or not? only problem is he did underwent a LARS knee reconstruction but sound like he has confidence in the surgery, would be good pick up with pick 32 if he drop that far, has talent to burn

You could be right Yaco but the depth of good/quality midfielders in this draft and with quite a few clubs needing talls/key forward something good at 32 will be available always a few sliders aswell. Markworth was penciled in at 19 for us and went 34, Kersten dropped to 30's.

Whitfield, Toumpas, Macrae, O'Rourke, Vlastuin, Kennedy, Hrovat, Graham, Garlett, Menzel, Mayes, Viney, A.Carter, J.Simpson, Ballard, Wines, Wright, Haynes, Pongracic, Broomhead ect ect

Plenty of good mids and with some clubs having 3 or 4 picks before us they certainly wont all be taking mids. I can see someone very decent being around pick 30.

Mids mids mids, we need 22 midfielders filling every single spot of our best 22 so we can never be midfielder weak again

I think the Brownlow says it all, halfway through the season Job and Stanton were out in front.

As soon as Stanton started dropping so did Essendon whilst Jobes impact diminished, anyone who see's differently and think we should get a KPP at pick 2 is a damn right fool, cough cough slattery.

Can't any of you predict more than a day into the future?

You could just as easily say we started dropping when Ryder went down, or as soon as our forward structure went our midfield structure followed, etc etc etc
While I'm sure we'll look to improve our midfield at some point in the draft, if we land some ready-made recruits, it drops down to our 2nd/3rd priority, rather than 1st.
And we will "only" rely on improvement from Heppell, Browne & Kavanagh in there. Which is no bad thing at all.

The only reason id pick a midfielder at 32 is because of the strength and quality of the midfielders in this draft and the weakness of talls. Plus we already get a tall in this draft and a very good one at that. History also shows you can pick up some good talls/rucks later on in the draft as they take longer to develop. Stratton from the hawks and Taylor for the cats are certainly good examples plus all the best ruckmen being rookies.

Like slatts said we really need the improvement to come from Heppell, Myers, Kav and Melksham all these guys were first round picks and considered top 5-6 in their draft group at some time for a reason. A fit and firing Zaharakis for the entire year as a true starting onballer is also required. We saw how Dangerfield and Beams went this year after being played as forward flanks that had short stints in the middle/wing. Its also clear that Stanton does struggle with the tag, Zaharkis firing like Beams would mean he wouldnt get the tag. I also think Howlett is still underrated hes every bit the player of Wright for the crows and hes become a very good starting onballer for them. Its not a bad midfield.

For me im not sure we need Moloney. I think he could potentially now looking at the side take time away from Myers, Howlett through the middle and as pure backup we already have Lonergan, Hocking.

For me, it's definitely midfielder at pick 32, although say someone like jaksch or tanner smith (key position players) slides I would be happy for us to take them, would finally be able to solve the Hurley back/forward puzzle.

But in saying that midfield would have to be a priority.
- graham
- Atkins
- Colquoun
- Simpson
- Hrovat
- Pongacic
- Lonergan

Would be happy with any of those and all would be good additions

Midfielders do tend to flow right throughout the (phantom) drafts. I would not be opposed to picking something else besides that inside midfielder we want. Would look at a Jacksh, Smith, if they were available. Even flankers. Guys like Hrovat and Colquon (sp?) could be options. I dunno, we might even trade our second rounder!
