Toast Power Aboriginal programs - Why 'Community'? PCL Explained

Port Adelaide's compassion and genuine respect for Aboriginal people is the prime reason I changed from a Crows and Glenelg supporter to Port Adelaide. Not saying that both Crows and Glenelg werent welcoming but it seems to be both part of Ports DNA and mission.
So proud of our club. So thankful for our awesome indigenous community who make our clubs culture even richer!
Glad you did. A club can't fake the type of commitment and community caring that PAFC demonstrates and lives, although others may try.

The headline that as long as you bleed black and white you're in, has been Port for as long as I remember (and starting supporting in the 80's I'm a new supporter compared to some here). The whole China xenophobia from those at the Swamp, only the latest contrast in attitudes.

The story in the Tsier is basically a rehash of what was on Port's website but it included this extra bit.

The Coalition Government is also investing $60,000 through the Regional Anangu Services Aboriginal Corporation to redevelop the Indulkana Oval on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. This grant will enhance the range of school attendance activities already under way in the community, including the Government’s Remote School Attendance Strategy and Power Community Ltd’s WillPOWER program.

The minister's statement is linked below and this is all part of a $138 mil Commonwealth program for - Indigenous education package announced by the Prime Minister in May to improve educational outcomes among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

We have been working directly with PMC - ie Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet for several years now on developing several of our indigenous community programs. It all helps with getting the PM's ear for our China venture.

In the video you can see some decent specs have been drawn up and looks like they have allocated a slot at Alberton for it but it might not be there. Raising another $12-$14m from corporates and private donations wont be easy.

This thread was started back in 2014.

Meanwhile, three years later, Melbourne released it's Reconciliation Action Plan and will wear their indigenous jumper at home for the first time this week.

Better late than never, I guess...but it just goes to show that for Port Adelaide, the axiom of 'making our community proud' is not just a hollow plaudit.

I haven't seen this picture before, but is this the concept drawing for the aboriginal leadership centre? For some reason, it's attached to a relatively unrelated article.

Did some TRT work this week at a school for kids with emotional and behavioural difficulties - many from traumatic and DV backgrounds etc. School got an email from the club looking for GOM (guardianship of the minister) kids to come and join a specially designed program where they get to engage with the club, do some lifeskills stuff and earn some SACE credits etc. Had no idea this program existed and just goes to confirm the breadth of understated, underrated and under the radar work done by the club's community venture, done not for profit, media plaudits or to sure up future members but done just because it's the right thing to do. We should be so proud.

Hear. Hear. Great work by PAFC - as usual.

Well said

Has anyone seen Isaiha Dudley play , some of my aboriginal friends reckon he's got the goods , I think he's at Salisbury West .
His pedigree is good but another thing some of my aboriginal friends tell me is that some of the kids from poorer backgrounds don't get selected , I'd hope that's not the case and programmes like ours can help pick them up .

That's basically what Rendell was getting at that the indigenous guys without good structured family background, have had problems handling AFL pressure cooker industry - there are high profile failures as well as the ones very few hear about - and as a result clubs are avoiding wasting draft picks on them. He was trying to warn the AFL they have to do something about it and the pantswetters at the AFL thought he was being racist.

Yea it might be true , hopefully the academy could help out by geting in early and being a positive influence in their lives , Byron , the Burgoynes , Wells , Ryder , Krak amongst many grew up with both aboriginal parents so it shouldn't be an an issue , but I definitely know they ask certain people in Pt.Lincoln for example about wether the kids smoke , have stable family life etc.
I suppose it's understandable but a bit sad if some kids don't get put forward if they're from an unpopular family or something

Love to go fishing there b geez

Marlon working for the club's indigenous programs, Daniel still working/involved with the club and spending part of the year down in Adelaide with his Something Wild store in the Adelaide Central Market, no wonder Steve Motlop is interested in moving to Port,

I have know Matt for over 35 years both as a teammate and friend and you have summed up perfectly....he does not have a racist bone in his body and the Cows and AFL burned Matt at the stake....unforgivable

I've got some good news about some things going on in this space re: Port's "Powerful Futures" that should become apparent soon if the club publishes it. I felt proud of our Club when we were discussing the details of it.

Huge for all of our programs, and huge for the Aboriginal youth that our programs cater to.

What I will say is the costs involved are covered by sponsorship by the partners of the program, including my workplace.

And that was his mistake.

No one tells AFL House what to do.

Since we are now high on the Rockliff news I will reveal what is happening.

Port, and the SA Government encompassing Attorney-General's Department (AGD), Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) and Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) have just signed a deal to extend our Power Cup program.

The Power Cup is based around the idea of educating young indigenous people and setting them on the right path to being not only highly employable, but successful. Students complete the educational programs and schooling with the added incentive of gaining a position in the Power Cup AFL games which are played once each year. Students are only be able to participate in the Power Cup if they successfully complete their schooling and education.

The program has been such a success that we ran into the unfortunate issue of the students struggling to find work post completion of their education. So Port and the SA Government have come together to help solve this.

The aforementioned government departments will now be placing (in paid positions) over 1000 (!) indigenous students who have completed the program into roles across SA that best suit their interests and skills, with full support and developmental pathways. DEWNR is a huge asset to this partnership, as they have many park ranger type roles and remote jobs that perfectly suit many indigenous student's living locations, interests and knowledge of the land.

Furthermore, AGD will be resourcing a full-time staff member based at Port Adelaide Football Club with the sole aim of interviewing all the students, assessing job fit, strengths and assisting with any boundaries, hurdles or issues the students may face. They will act as a direct liaison between the club, the students and all of the government departments involved to ensure we are placing students effectively, and supporting them as best as we can.

Just fantastic news. It is no wonder we attract the best indigenous talent in Australia. We care, we facilitate them to thrive, and boy is it rewarding for everyone involved.

Quoted because I couldn't like it twice. I love this club.
