Thought it would be fun to have a go and guess our starting 22 round 1, and see how you went.

My guess

FB Scarlett, H.Taylor, Enright
HB Mackie, Lonergan, Wojcinski
C Bartel, Kelly, Corey
HF Chapman, Hawkins, Steve Johnson
FF Varcoe, Brown, Stokes
R Stephenson, Selwood, Christensen
Int West, Guthrie, Smedts, Duncan
e Motlop, Schroder, Gillies, Murdoch

missing pods at ff moron. He doesnt have a 6 month injury god ppl exaggerate injuries, round one is 2 and a half months away! i bet vardy will be back early season and menzel by mid year
if brown plays ff were no hope he'll break down, way too skinny and frail, will never become a main stay afl player, henry playfair II

Ease up. He probably just forgot him.

This is laughable. Menzel will be back for finals AT BEST. Even then he will just be in the VFL. Full knee reco is a 12 month job, they will not rush him.

Vardy is a big question mark. May see him at some stage this year, may be out for the year. I'm having my money on us not seeing him in the AFL next year.

Doubt it. Injury problems are now past him. Will be a gem.

I'll second all of that Rizzo.

Please remember guys , opinions are neither right or wrong , they are opinions. Disagree but maintain respect or else .......

Starting 22 R1. At this stage we are really just guessing and just like last year with Guthrie , I suspect a kid who plays well in the PSC may well start in the best 22.

FB Gillies , Lonergan , Smedts
CHB Enright, Taylor, Mackie
C Varcoe, Kelly, Poodle Hunt
CHF SJ, Hawkins, Duncan
FF Pods, Bartel, West
R Simpson , Selwood , Christensen

Int. Ink Hunt, Stokes,Cowan,...(Motlop/Hogan/Guthrie)

( Scarlet ,Chappy, Wojo have been left out as I think they will manage them. R1 is in Perth , R1 is different to R22 and R2 is against Hawks)

Good team. Feels weird not having Ling and Otto on the list anymore...

I reckon they'll keep out Scarlo for a fair few games next season, probably to get some good development into Gillies for the seasons following 2012. That is IF Scarlett retires.

Menzel is not all doom and gloom, not every knee is a 12 month job....Menzel is already back running which is a very positive start. I remember Prismall was back in round 10 for the bombers after doing his knee in the QF the previous year. Also, Brown was due to come back for The pies before doing something stupid in Arizona...point being not every ACL is a year out, although I agree caution will be exercised.

Vardy will be interesting, seems they caught the problem before it escalated into something more serious and reports say they are now confident the problem has been addressed. Ultimately would be great to see both back as they would be huge contributors to our premiership assault

Can see no reason why Josh Hunt won't line up Rd 1.
I do agree Turbo that some players will be rested as per Scotty's rotation system (if that's possible before the season opener"

Bartel at FF is an interesting one for sure.
Can do it for sure, but doubtful on that.

My roughie for Rd 1 is one S. Hogan

Like rizzo said I did forget him. I forgot he will be ready to play mid way through the NAB cup. I actualy also agree with Turbocat, in which I think a few players will be rested to train for one more week and not having to travel.

I always miss someone doing this kind of thing, but here goes:

B: Lonergan Scarlett Enright
HB: Mackie Taylor T.Hunt
C: Varcoe Corey Kelly
HF: Chapman Hawkins Duncan
F: Christensen Podsiadly Johnson
Foll: Simpson Bartel Selwood
Int: West Stokes Wojcinski
Sub: Smedts
Emerg: Brown Byrnes Motlop

Was thinking about putting Brown in the forward pocket, but decided to go for another running player since we're at Subi in Round 1.

I hope Smedts can be a similar sub to what Milburn was.

I remember reading in the book "Greatness" that Scott wanted to play at least 4 players each week with less than 50 games experience, so that quota is more than filled with T.Hunt, Duncan, Christensen, Pods, Simpson, West and Smedts.

not trying to have a go but i would be playing the best 22 for at least the first month of the year no need to rest players that early on esp rd1. rather get off to a go start so resting players becomes a luxury and doesnt compromise a top 4 spot. set ourselves up early and then we can start doing this, exactly like last year.

You make a good point.
I think it is very advantageous to get a good, reasonably set team structure before we start resting players.

It's 3 months early...........but for the meat tray

If you seriously think menzel wont be back next year you've got rocks in your head, he'll be back no later then round 15, vardy round 7 or 8.
July is 6 months away, if hes jogging now barring any set backs he'll be cherry ripe for july, and that'll give him a good 6 weeks to get match fit for the finals.
And how do you know that injuries are behind Brown, he doesnt even know that how would you?

You are new here and already well and truly on your way to getting booted off the forum.
Show some respect.

By the way, the guy you are having a crack at is a newspaper sports journo. I think he knows more than you chief!

I think my experience of playing footy my whole life and gone through a knee reco myself gives me better knowlege then a sports JOURNO

It took me 9 months, never had any sorness or worry since

Good for you. Personally I hope you're right re Menzel and he gets back for July-ish but history is not on his side, but I would venture that subjecting a knee to the rigours of an AFL season is somewhat different to whatever level you played at.

Ladies...it's all speculation at the very best, no one can determine the exact extent of anyones injuries. What we do know is that ACL injuries typically take 12 months, some come back earlier, like Prismall, some take much longer, it is however very encouraging that Menzel is back running and participating in proper non skills training....that puts him ahead of the pack I would imagine.

As for starting line ups....I would imagine Guthrie, Hogan, Simpson and O would be the prime candidates to take the place of Ling and Otto. You would imagine that we are likely to see Taylor Hunt, Motlop, Brown and Smedts very early on as well....my smokey is still Schroder though!

B: Junt, Lonners, Boris
HB: Gillies, Taylor, Wojo
C: Donuts, Sel, Mackie
HF: SJ, Hawk, TV
F: Kersten, Jimmeh, Chappy
Foll: Big O, Kel, Bundy
I/C: Stokes, West, Hogan, Smedts

Emerg: Cowan, Simpson, Hogan, Motlop

Scarlett to be in for RD 2.
