Hi gents, it’s a freezing hello from downtown Prague, Melbourne weather is underrated!

Just wondering if there’s any news from any practice matches that may have been played so far this pre-season?

Just throwing it out there for discussion : Im thinking the fiscal positions of a lot of Clubs out there would be somewhat constrained and tight.
Revenue streams were squeezed over covid, not to mention maybe, the premature retirement of some players due to the lay off as well. How benefical financely has the introduction of the womens teams been, if at all? Have they instigated new revenue streams to complement their respective Clubs, or has the cost been disproportionate. Im suggesting it was never easy out there, but Im thinking it has just become a whole lot harder.....

Interesting subject FF

I know personally that through the correspondence I get from Collegians (my club) that there was a large spike in costs last year, mainly due to with extra sides from 21 (6 up from 5) and with 4 of the 6 sides playing finals there was basically another 4 weeks of running costs at the club, plus match costs like physios, trainers, coaches.

I know a couple of other premier section clubs have mentioned that sponsors have been a lot less forthcoming with funds post COVID as they were pre COVID with a changing and ever complex business environment, coupled with high inflation, it is getting harder and harder to retain sponsors let alone attract new ones I'd say.

In relation to female footy, I wouldn't know how many they'd bring in, in terms of sponsors etc, but I know that senior womens footy is not as established as male senior footy is, so you'd expect attendances would be a bit lower etc, which won't bring in as much bar and canteen revenue on games where it is only females playing.

Clubs are really looking for ways to find money, not an amateur club or the same sport, but I know of a local soccer club who have said to a local catering company, pay us $30,000-$35,000 rent per year and you can use the canteen for game day and dinners for Thursday nights for players and get to keep all the revenue. This has basically guaranteed an income stream and reduced volunteer hours required by this club substantially and turned a canteen that barely turned a profit into a very valuable revenue point for a club. I know some amateur clubs do this as well and it seems more and more common. Long gone are the days of mothers, fathers and partners running the canteen for clubs.

If women’s footy is in anyway a drag on your club except for volunteer umpires then you are dinosaurs. It is no fluke that SKOBAFL won both comps last year. Women’s footy is the only good news at VAFAHQ for half a decade.

It appears to be a good move by the soccer club.

Years ago, the Willi CYs ran a very successful Bingo. Then Friday night shopping kicked in together with Friday night footy plus a few other Friday distractions and the revenue stream dwindled.

The external revenue stream was great, initially paying off our clubrooms which the CYs had financed through our co-op, refurbished the social rooms and looked after the cricket. Then there was no longer very much involvement in normal players’ and friends’ voluntary organising of the many functions which, pre-bingo had generated and covered not only operating costs, but player bonding, and a great club family atmosphere.

Club volunteers needed to step up because for the past 10 or so years they hadn’t needed to organise anything because the gravy train had all club costs covered.

For the 10 years when the club had been awash with funds, the CYs languished in the lower grades. There was a void in the atmosphere which wasn’t understood. Then the cash cow disappeared, players stepped up, and add the girls who are great organisers, the club is again pumping.

Players and supporters need to be involved which generates more volunteers and a great club atmosphere. External cash inflows are great, but keep the troops involved.

Who would have known you can watch the Pakistan Super League cricket live in Portugal? Amazing last over here!

Anyhoo, as I watch this game here, I also read online that Dan Hannebery is playing at OX, great pickup for the competition. They also mention Sam Naismith at OX but I believe he is one of Port Melbourne’s marquee recruits.

I also hear SKOB have some gun from Williamstown VFL who played in two flags for the Towners.

Hannebery is a great signing for Xavs and the competition. Good luck playing against him.

Who is the Williamstown recruit SKOB have picked up? Will he be a 5 point player?

Mr Platinum: "I also hear SKOB have some gun from Williamstown VFL who played in two flags for the Towners".
The SKOB recruit may be too old for VAFA Premier as the last two flags that Willy VFL were involved in was in 2015.

Hannebery will be a gun recruit for Xavs and the comp, enough with the negativity.

Just be glad Ormond don't have to play against him.

Player point values are irrelevant for all but BluesAFL and ScotchVFL.

Back in Oz and all I’m hearing is that the OX are telling anyone who will listen that they are ‘unbeatable’ this year!

Here’s an attachment of their last game, with their BOG from that day gone from the club, along with Hams, Schoenmakers, Richards and possibly Robinson.

Obviously Billy Gowers is a great in, Hannebery unknown based on his last 6 years at AFL level. I’m sure OB will be looking forward to putting them in their place again when they play them.

Let’s not polish the trophy for this years nomads yet 😊

Bring on season ‘23!
