PSD and Rookie Draft

Thanks I.P:thumbsu:

Just like they did with Sandi, he was just putting putting the finishing touches on the Christmas decorations in Esplanade Park by putting angles and stars on the tops of the Norfolk pines when Smartie asked him to come down for a run, and we've never looked back since.

Bullshit! they were Angels not angles.

"and we take frickin Mark Johnson.  :thumbsd:"

I guess that comment was made before you found out he was half Croatian?

nah I knew it already - I was just shocked and a bit disappointed at the time that we took an old Essendon delistee, knowing that we would likely take Kepler with our next pick.

Posts since that one indicated I calmed down soon after, and having read and taken on board some of the comments and opinions from some other posters... I'm okay with it. With Johnson you know what you're getting - a 50 game player, experienced, hard at it... if pick 55 were a youngster - who knows whether we would get that out of him - and certainly not from 2008 onwards. PSD + 4 rookie picks - that's where we will pick up the speculative types.

I.P do you know of any other Croats playing in the AFL? All that I know of are Maric and Illja Grgic (who I don't think plays anymore), there is only one Swede however Kris Massie. well that I know of.

There's the one and only Big Pav of course!

And Didak.... :o

There are two Marics now - Ivan and Adam (not related).

From recent days gone by, Scott Watters' mother is Croatian; then there are all the South Freo weagles - Jako + his bro, Suma as well as Tony Begovich.

I'll see if I can find a few more for you... although it is hard to identify the ones who are half-bloods (terminology courtesy of harry potter) on their mother's sides.

Thanks, I could never forget Pav, and the evil ones I tend to put in the back of my mid so it's no suprise I forgot them.

Don't worry about it too much if it's too much trouble to find them as I was just wondering if there were more than the ones that I know of. But Scott Watters was a suprise for me, who would have known, fancy him not being at least a bit taller, oh well.

Technically I dont think there are any, no doubt several with Croatian backgrounds but unlikely any that were born there. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah your right, kinda. But that stuff doesn't matter to us, just like Aussies claiming Russel Crowe and Kostya Tzu as Aussie, at least when we do it they have some background of being Croatian (mother/father craotina) which makes them half croation.

That's splitting hairs now isn't it?

They may be Australian by birth and nationality, but they are still "Croatian" by bloodlines and ancestry.

Not sure about the others, but this is the case of the jakovich boys. If by a quirk of fate a person is born in one country, but his/her entire ancestry, including both parents, were born in another country - then can s/he not claim that s/he is of that "race" or "nationality".

That is also the story of my husband. He was born here after his family escaped the Communist rule in the former Yugoslavia (and I literally mean did a midnight runner as his father was about to be imprisoned for refusing to become a spy for the Communists in his village); and while he is a proud Australian, grateful for what this country was able to offer his family - he is still Croatian. His first language was Croatian, and he and his sister were the first in their entire family history to be born in Australia - you can't deny them their "Croatianism" and say they are not Croatian just because they weren't born there.

Same goes with the guys I mentioned. Sure they are Aussies - no denying that, but they can also be Croatian too.

Anyway - this has gone way off topic, and this is not the proper forum to be debating this... I just made a "brief and jocular" remark (;)) about getting Travis Dulic... I'd like to see us get him - because he sounds like a good player, not because he is of any particular heritage..... (although that helps... :D).

I won't say any more about it and clog up this thread.... let's get back on topic. :thumbsu:

^^ true that. :thumbsu: he is rather, ummmm. well developed for an 18 year old. Please pick him Harves. ;)

I have a good feeling about this rookie draft. We have a good hit-rate with rookies, given the enormously speculative nature of picks taken this late.... Our rookie "hits" in the last 10 years:

1997:
Pick 6 - Brad Dodd - 50 games. 50/50

1998:
Pick 32 - Antoni Grover - 129 games. Hit.

1999:
Pick 18 - Robert Haddrill - 58 games. Hit - injury not lack of talent ended his career.

2000:
Pick 21: Roger Hayden - 80 games. Hit.
Pick 36: Daniel Haines - 16 games. Injuries made it a miss, unfortunately. Maybe 50/50.
Pick 49 - Andrew Siegert - 36 games. 50/50 - good depth player.

2001:
Pick 1 - Luke Webster - 33 games. Hit - good depth player.
Pick 33 - Aaron Sandilands - 93 games. Hit.

2002:
Pick 36 - Daniel Gilmore - 33 games. Hit.
Pick 51 - Steven Dodd - 59 games. Hit.

2003:
Pick 10 - Paul Duffield - 13 games. 50/50.
(remember also Michael Johnson at pick 8 in the PSD)

2004:
Pick 39: Ryan Crowley - 50 games. Hit.

2006:
Pick 13 - Chris Smith. Jury out (will be a hit!).
Pick 28 - Andrew Foster. Jury out (will be a hit!).

:thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Bring it on! :D

Gee IP, that is a pretty good hit rate. I think there is still some very good talent, local lads, in particular, left for the rookie draft. Swans only had 2 of their colts players taken when some in the media were trying to talk up ten, but their is still talent there.

Which brings me to something else I've been wondering for a while, why such a seemingly high success rate in the rookie/PSD draft? Is it because these guys appreciate the chance more, because they didn't get a go first time round?

Ash McGrath would be handy in the PSD. I cant think of any other listed player that would appeal to us

Whats the ruling with our delistees? Are we obligated to take them if available?

With all the stuff we've heard about Collard, I cant imagine Richmond taking him

I've been a fan of Collard but wondering why his stocks have fallen so much now?

Can you (or someone else) tell me the "stuff about him" please? - a PM will be ok if its not suitable to go on the board

Much appreciated

Ash Mcgrath is going to re-sign with Brisbane according to the Worst

geez - leave it till the last minute, whydoncha Ash....

Probably a good thing IMO from a Freo POV - at least then we're not tempted. I'd love for us to go for McGinnity in the PSD - nothing wrong with a young fella in the PSD... look at Johnno - a huge get for us in that draft.

Then I'd grab a ruckman with first rookie pick...

The rookie draft might not be as "exciting" as we hoped, esp if they just redraft Collard / Dunn / Mourish...

I'd be disappointed if we were to rookie Mourish.

As you say IP, with the PSD and rookie draft we'd only see 2 new players if all those guys were to be re-drafted. Dunn and Collard I have no problem with.

Tundra why no probs with Freo going back for Collard? To me the guy had a bigger support base in Perth than Mourish and still lost the plot. Mourish I agree was an / still is an unknown quantity, but to me he has more to offer as a player long term than Collard. Height for one, mobility and versatility for another. Collard is one dimensional similar to what Medhurst was, forward pocket and that's it and if he aint kicking goals he is no benefit to the team. Saying all this if Freo can use picks on Johnson and Bradley than going back for Dunn, Mourish and Collard wouldn't surprise me in the least. I hear Toby Stribling had an ok year back at North Adelaide!!!

Welcome Freezin, I would actually prefer we look at other players first ie Gourdis, Sullivan, Dulic, Wilson, Ellard, Starling, Hardingham. But I think Collard is more widely recognised as being the more talented of the two. I disagree with your view of him being one dimensional. As a 15 yr old he won AA at the Qld 15s Championship as a midfielder, and most of his junior footy has been played in the mid. It wasn't until he graduated to Souths league side that he was placed permanently as a pocket.

Totally agree Tundra, I'd prefer Freo too look at some of the fella's you mentioned before Mourish, Collard etc. In regards to Collard being one dimensional, this is not a slight on his ability, just purely an observation based on the fact that Freo have an abundance of small/medium/tall midfielders in their ranks. Collard wouldn't be Harvey's first option, thus his only chance of making it would be in a forward pocket. If he wasn't kicking goals where else would you put him? At least with Mourish he has the height to go up front or back. But saying that I'm quite suprised both boys got delisted because of their questioned committment! Most youngsters would chew their right arms off to be given half a chance to play AFL! Obviously the kudos of being on an AFL list went to their heads, life as a rookie might open their eyes a bit more eh?

This is what Mercury from DL reported re Collard after attending the members meeting:

Q:Why was Clayton Collard delisted?
Schwab's answer: We have a set of standards and Clayton did not meet those standards. We know we were taking on a risk when we drafted him last year. It is now up to Clayton to sort himself out and then we'll probably redraft him.
