I think he is leaving. If he was staying he would have already signed and avoided the circus that this has become. We are not going to be able to offer anything like what GWS will put out there for him and really what does he owe us? He strikes me as a pretty rational and logical guy and I think the rational decision is to take the money. AFL careers can end in abrupt and untimely ways, the players owe it to themselves to earn what they can in a pretty short window.

If it happens we should be given a priority pick in the national draft as compensation. Even that wouldn't cover him because he's shown that he's going to be a gun, they don't all turn out that way.

The idea of the thread is to make the "BIG" call, not sit on the fence.
Yeah, fair enough.

In the spirit of the thread I'll hop off the fence and say he'll end up staying.:thumbsu:

reckon he'll stay, have thought so all along

because of the media circus, we may pay over the odds for him, but I don't for one minute buy the tinfoil hat theories that are being put out there

Also believe that Tigers supporters are deluded into thinking Scully is the only AFL player who grew up passionately supporting a football team

So much media hype

Take GWS out and its just another contract negotiation

Scully wants it at the end of season, on his terms. All credit to him, he backed himself, could have had a massive injury with no leg to stand on. Do you think the club would have given him the contract he wanted on potential? He's a professional, the club is his workplace, he still needs to take care of himself, something the AFLPA have been really pushing to the younger players of recent

I think his staying.. But I voted that his going. Then I think his going, and then perhaps he'll stay.

What exactly was the reasoning to delay contract talks to the end of the season? Was it not to avoid disruption to himself/team about making negotiations through the season? Because if so, clearly would have been easier to get a deal done.

Other reasoning? He wanted to put in a good year and perhaps boost his contract up to a figure as high as possible? If so, I find that reasoning hard to believe since he missed the first half the season and he was well aware of that from the start of the season.

When it comes down to it, players don't have an awful lot to do when it comes to negotiating contracts, so I can't see why he would delay it. Then there's a little thing called friends. Obviously he played with a few of the Melbourne boys growing up and is apparently pretty close with them. Anyone who's played footy knows you share a pretty tight bond with majority of the boys at the club. Who knows!!

Either his staying. Or he should take up Poker.

Still think he's gone.

Money like what he is being offered is hard to turn your back on. If it was Tom's decision alone i think he would stay, but his manager and a few other people in his life are urging him to keep his options open.

I hope he stays but i dont think he will.

BTW: What are peoples thoughts on the reported offer we made him (something like 2.5 million over 4 years) ? Id rather see him walk than throw our cap out like that for one player.

He's worth 500k max in the 4th year of his contract, no more. 1.8 mil over 4 years i could deal with. If becomes the gun we all think after 4 years then we can talk 750k plus per year.

We have money in the cap this year and next etc, we need to spend it somewhere

And as i have noted previously we will be paying a much higher caliber of players under the same cap that we currently are so where is all this cap room going to come from?

Heads up its there for the taking we made room for tom and others so they stay and will continue to do so

If we cant pay tom or any other player such money next year then we must really be struggling

GWS have a lot of spare cash to dish out. But are they even targeting Tom Scully?

It's been speculated that GWS have made an offer to Tom, though he claims they haven't (and so does sheedy I think?)

We all talk about him going for the money but is there anything in offical print that says an offer of X amount of $ has been made or is it just rumours based on his current contract?

I think you pretty close to the mark Rude, the powers that be will be working on at least a 5 year plan with all of our young guns salaries, sticking as close as possible to this plan is crucial to gaining the end result they are after...

Can someone remind me what Martin (Tigers) was reported to be getting on his contract extension???, surely there is the precedent we should be using, give or take a few thousand...

I think he will be going, good luck to him, I know if my son or I were in his position I would do the same, such a unique situation for players this year & next...

I want the heat to be put on Sylvia, nobody mentions him, who's his manager??? would everyone be happy to see him defect???, we would get decent compo for him being a high draft pick, senior player & high salary...

He will stay with the MFC, fingers crossed he will...

And please MFC sign up stef martin for a minimum 3 year extension

As a side note, I never thought i'd see the day when Stefan became a required player. :D

Hell no would I be happy to see him defect.. is a gun and still has at the LEAST 5 of his best years left.. is a vital part for us with out young midfielders nd players who kick goals nd use the footy like he does are gold.. he won't leave, not after going through the yrs we just have..

I agree that he is a gun, my question is why isn't the heat on him to sign with us??? He is getting off easy while the pressure is put on a 2nd year player...

We'll is there anything to say he's not talking contracts wit the club now?

Sylvia doesn't have the media profile of a number 1 draft pick. The general public wouldn't have a great idea of who he is, as opposed to Scully, so the media don't create a shitstorm about it. As with Scully, it's all about what sells papers: NUMBER ONE DRAFT PICK SCULLY WILL DEFECT is a good headline, SOLID-OCCASIONALLY-SPECTACULAR MIDFIELDER SYLVIA (YOU REMEMBER, THE GUY WE INSINUATED BASHED HIS GIRLFRIEND A FEW YEARS AGO, PLAYS FOR THE DEMONS, CRAPPY HAIRSTYLE) TO GO TO GWS is not.

I'd love to be optimistic about Scully staying, but I feel the lure of big bucks will be too hard to resist. I always said if Ablett goes, then anyone from any team could defect.

Hearing Lynch's words yesterday made me a little more optimistic, but I'm still not convinced enough to be confident he will stay. Oddly enough, the more the season goes on, the more I think he will stay. The club is positive, the coach is positive, the team mates are positive he will stay, so it is all positive news coming out of the club which is slowly turning me around. He is a very important cog in future success I feel. If he does go, I'll be shattered...

Understand its 'Melbourne supporters' only but Scully is a player that is of interest to other supporters. Didnt intrude on your poll.

Can you imagine his hardwork in the middle being butchered by Falau and no change being made because Sheedy wants to prove a point to the football world. Would be deflating for a midfielder.

Sheedy is the key to it being a moot issue. He talks about GWS as his own project for shoving it up Essendon and Richmond. You rightly rejected him also. Has been a bit quiet lately and just needs to start making more comments to make sure of it. Just need him to make a television appearance and give a smug look about raiding teams. Doesnt realise todays generation see right through him.

Most of the younger players will be talking about moving back home in the first couple of years. Its amazing the media have tricked 17% of your supporters into thinking he would go there.

Martin signed an 2 year extention last year (on top of his original 2 years) which was reported to be around $400k in the 3rd & 4th years.

If we give Scully $1.8 Million over 4 years, I'd estimate that Martin will out earn Scully over the same period. (Scully $450k per year on average, Martin $400k for 2 years plus 2 years of his next contract, it would only need to be $500k per year to equal Scully, unless Martin has a bad season or 2 you'd expect him to get more than a $100k increase, especially with player salaries increasing).

Never thought of it this way, but if Martin's worth & getting that, how do we compare Scully? Wrong thread, but food for thought

I would be interested to hear your opinion on why Scully hasn't STRONGLY and REGULARLY voiced his desire to stay at melbourne (besides on scratchy press conference 12 weeks ago)

I've always thought he'd stay and haven't wavered.

I don't believe he's a liar, I don't believe he's fully made up his mind, and I don't believe he'll leave when he puts all the cards on the table.

Players play for premierships. Most end up forming an incredible bond with their mates. They'll usually stay unless they're disenchanted with their club. He'll want to run out on the G every second week in the heartland of the AFL.

He'll stay.
