Well who else’s fault is it?
Clubs can’t just build grounds without council approval.
Leagues should be working with councils to provide more grounds, the AFL wants the code to keep expanding yet do sweet FA to work with clubs and local leagues to develop more facilities .

Local clubs/leagues live off the scraps of the AFL so they only way to get more is to give them more .

You are kidding me aren't you?? AFL footy is incredibly well serviced for facilities for a sport that isn't even #1 in the state. Head to Victoria and try to find the equivalent of Fishermans rd or Moreton bay complex on a rugby league level? We have completely zilch to complain about in Qld for facilities. What is frustrating is that GC council showed a complete lack of appreciation of impact on not just AFL but soccer, league, union, cricket with a knee jerk reaction to a weather report that I don't think ever eventuated and was never supposed to. If there was 50-100mm forecast so be it. No dramas - that can destroy a ground pretty quickly if played on by people in footy boots and may never recover but this was a silly decision. My hope is that some of these people behind glass windows don't see the year of co-vid when events were cancelled at last minutes notice (for good reason) as a template for "other excuses" to do so in 2021 and beyond.

of course the result doesn’t matter but fair to say sometimes a pre season game has you thinking “ geez there’s a bit of work to do” or “liked the look of that” and usually a bit of both.

Broady had a hit out v a loaded Sharks team. Was predictably one sided but despite that both sides would be happy with what they saw. The man on the mark rule in my view will quicken the game at our level and sharks were able to exploit.

but cats cracked in well, did pretty well in contested ball and on occasions moved it well against strong oppo. Great experience for the lads

Sheers, Erickson, Fisher and Lower where good also. But what a difference from QAFL TO VFL. Southport im guessing will be bottom 6 in a 22 team VFL Competition and they were class. It was about 22.17 to 1.4 why would Southport play this game?

It was about 22.17 to 1.4 why would Southport play this game?

Think Southport will be better than bottom 6, and the Gold Coast Suns pulled out on them. Southport needed a hit out, they played each other last year before covid struck. But my understanding last year it was the bottom 25 and players not on their list yet played, this year was top end talent that played.

I'm guessing that the "young blond headed kid for Broadbeach down back" was Bodhi Uwland, who turns 18 this year?

I've seen Bodhi play a few times and he's a very impressive kid. I'm sure the Suns will be taking a very good look at him in this year's draft, and he will excel in the QAFL if he's not playing as a top up for the Suns VFL team.

6 times (twice each team) but agree I think their list is plenty competitive at VFL level

that’s all correct. Last year probably 8 of the top 12 didn’t play. A much stronger team this year and yes the Suns weren’t keen to play them in a praccy for some reason

I think Aspley's midfield will be competitive - Ryan Bastinac, Matt Payne, Corey Lyons and Jack Rolls should match up pretty well against VFL opposition.

I'll be interested to see who makes Aspley's list of players 22 and under - it's a bit hard to assess any team's chances in this comp until you see who will be filling the mandatory 6 spots for "development " players each week.

From what I have seen Southport have at least 6+ that are U22 from AFL lists. Don’t worry they will be top 8 I think.

They have Joyce, Dawson, Crossley all U22 from Suns list plus a few they have recruited.

Pretty sure its 22 or under for development players, but Aspley got approval to make it 23 or under - which is fairly typical of these sorts of competitions where they make the rules up as they go.

Would think both Southport and Aspley will have 6 blokes who are first choice players that fit this category anyway based on their lists, so won't really compromise selection at all.

Yeah will be interesting - disappointing that a guy like Payne in the twilight of his career, didnt get this opportunity 5-8 years ago and could test himself in a comp like this. I'm sure he will be more than handy still but time stops for no one. Any player who excels on this stage will at least be on AFL clubs radar although it did take one bloke at Carlton to win 2 comp B&Fs before even getting rookied!

With the cuts at AFL clubs especially around development, these comps become important as clubs will start to look for straight away types that they don’t need to spend 3-4 years developing in the reserves.

The same kids who think they are all getting drafted and most get used as witches hats for the odd couple that will get drafted, then they think they are superstars but most struggle to get a kick at QAFL level then they seem to be the ones not playing by the age of 23.

Just because you wear a lions academy training singlet and shorts doesn’t make you a good footy player
