At the end of every year I hear some colllingwood fans say that collingwood will win the flag the following year.

my question is for those who where around in 1989.

Did you think that collingwood would win the flag in 1990?
You need a lot to fall into place to win a premiership, even more so nowadays. I'm sure only the very optimisitc of Hawthorn supporters would have been predicting a premiership leading into 2008.

With regard to 1990, at the end of round 20 when we were poleaxed by Hawthorn to the tune of 80 odd points, I didn't like our chances. But then, five weeks later after we'd beaten Essendon by 10 goals in a semi final and the Hawks were already eliminated, the tide had turned dramatically.

I'm not sure about Pies supporters saying at the end of every year that we'll win a premiership the next year. In fact, after 2007 I personally thought we were in danger of dropping out of the eight in 2008. However, seeing the quality of youngsters unearthed, improvement in the 21/22 year olds such as Pendlebury, Thomas, O'Brien, Anthony, etc. and with a bit of luck around getting players on the park (Rusling, Reid, Dick, Presti, Rocca) I believe we have reason to be extremely bullish about the next 4 or 5 years. It may not be 2009 (then again it may be), but we're in for a hell of a ride over the next few years. And this is the first time since 1990 that I've had that perception.

We had a very good team in 88 and 89 that wasn't quite good enough to go all the way. In fact, despite finishing in the top 3 at the end of the 88 season we lost both finals and were bundled out. From memory in 89 we finished just inside the top 5 but was eliminated in our only final. Hawthorn were nearly unbeatable around this time and we never looked like beating them.

1990 saw the recruitment of a couple of smalls from interstate that had excellent disposal that we sorely needed in Scott Russell and Tony Francis. Still, no-one was confident at the start of the year that we would be any better than where we were in the 2 years prior but we hoped we could at least win a final!

As the 1990 season progressed we started looking very good indeed. It was shaky at first and Francis got suspended for 6 weeks but Scotty Russell had an immediate impact. After an epic battle against a flying Essendon at Waverly, which we just lost, I think everyone knew we were a force. I distinctly remember being at Waverly in a game against Carlton where we flogged them by about 10 goals and in one passage of play Francis ran through the centre and titted Taylor with a perfect 40 metre pass. I turned to my old man and said, "yo know, I think we can win it this year". We finally had the extra class in the midfield that capped it all off.

Co-incidently, our bogey side, Hawthorn were very injury struck and were struggling. Having said that, they absolutely flogged us about a month out from the finals. The naysayers came out from everywhere of course. We played 2 very poor sides in Fitzroy and North Melbourne in the last couple of rounds and soundly flogged both of them but people remained sceptical as to whether we had regained our mid season form (as those 2 teams were so poor).

We struggled against an "on the up" West Coast in the first drawn final, however, in brilliant coaching from Matthews (who took a positive view to the draw) we came out and flogged them in the replay. Luckily, Hawthorn were eliminated and we became an unstoppable force (in retrospect).

So yes, it was pretty similar to peoples hopes for this year. We expected to be around the finals but need an extra dimension to take the step (and our share of luck of course). These days you can't usually recruit mature players ready to fire like Russell and Francis, but hope that the kids step up with that improvement. Let's hope the likes of McCarthy, Wellingham etc can have some impact.

I called it in 1987 after we won the under 19 premiership and had players like Brown Monkhorst McGuane Crosisca developing and the others that didn't make it but were good back up Orval Croall Mrakov Keays etc

Strangely though in 1990 I wasn't confident because Essendon had a better team than us.. but lady luck finally smiled on us when Sheedy rested all his stars in the final home and away game to play all 4 Daniher brothers and claim that record.. then when we drew with WC in the final and had to replay the next week suddenly all Essendon stars went from a nice refresh to 3 weeks without any match practice and never really recovered :thumbsu:

We'll have the list to win from 2010 on.. but don't discount lady lucks importance

How bloody similar does that sound to 07, 08.

My old man has said similar things lately, all we need is to have our bogey side (which once again is hawthorn) to be on the other side or the draw or better yet eliminated.

Oh and sidebottom/beams/mccarthy or wellingham need to do a russell and francis impersonation

The club actually told Francis all we need is a rover to win a flag to get him to come to Victoria.. they didn't lie :p

I can never remember not being optimistic we could make the finals in any year but I can remember never being confident we could win the GF if we made it.
Even with 8 minutes to go in 1990 I was a bloody nervous wreck.
When that siren sounded a lifetime of frustration melted away in a few glorious seconds.
Now I can just be optimistic, if we make a GF then we will win if we are good enough. On our day, in any era, Collingwood can beat any side....but is it our day?

I sat there through the entire halftime break with my head in my hands staring at my feet.. we'd been there so many times.. I had visions of 1970 running through my head.. but when Madden hit the post from dead in front I knew we had it.. walking out of that ground is the only religious experience I've ever known.. my body was so light I couldn't feel it, it was like walking on air.. I'd heard of that before but thought it was bullshit until that day.

I was only 5... I remember where I was though, at my Grandpas watching the game. We left before the end though and had to check some shop windows on the way home to see who won.

But yeah, I can't really answer the question in the OP :P

The walk out of the ground was magic. I walked up Punt road to Victoria Park and it was unbelievable. Smiles on delirious faces, tears in eyes, and infectious joy abounded. People came out of their homes to clap and cheer.

The whole party at Vic Park was a blast. I've never seen so many beer cans in my life and although I must have crunched about a dozen in a few hours the adrenilin wouldn't allow you to feel drunk.

It was one of the best days of my life. I want that feeling again!

I was 19. It was awesome. I recall losing both games to the bombers and being pumped by the Hawks. After the West Coast draw where Summich? missed his chance to put us out of it I was sickened and I doubt I was confident we'd be premiers a few weeks later. But entering the GF I had hopes of victory but didn't expect to be able to replicate the previous beating we handed out to the bombers. After the Bombers kicked the opening 2 goals through Paul Salmon I was even less confident. But our backline in 1990 was supreme and held tight. We had a lot of things go our way to win that GF and we have probably been more set to win it and lost in other attempts. Everything went our way, we played awesome, the Bombers looked flat and got nothing out of a few stars like Anderson on the wing. Van Der Haar looked past it too.

I was one month old, and probably watching my dad cry, as he supports the bombers haha

So was I, except my dad is a mad pies supporter. Theres a photo of me dressed up in black and white on the day lol. I've got the match on video as well as a video "Road to Victory" hosted by a young Eddie which recaps the whole year. I must have watched them 100 times lol.

I have that video also. Misplaced it in a move sometime ago. Plus I don't have a working VCR. Can you get it on DVD now??

With Hawthorn's dominance due to its zoning advantages, you'd be a raving optimist if you assumed that you'd win a flag anytime in that era. They pwned us at the time, even when they had chronic injuries in 1990.

We had a good team incubating with Brown, McGuane, Pants, Crossisca all still pretty yong, but the 'surprises' in Russell and Francis couldn't be predicted. I reckon Russell was almost better than Shaw in the Grannie, so the impact he had at age 20 was remarkable, and Scooter gave oodles of drive and pace.

At the start of the year, Essendon had our measure, but we improved game by game peaking when it mattered, although Malthouse almost robbed us of a direct path to the Grannie with the draw (thanks Summich!).

People always discuss the prized top 4 finish, but you really need to be top 2 to go in with some confidence and a psychological advantage.
