By popular demand I bring you the RAGE thread.

RAGE will be the next foray into the FPS genre from Id Software makers of smash hits like Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein FPS titles that have literally moulded the industry.

Platforms: PlayStation 3, XBOX 360, PC & Mac.
Published by: Electronic Arts
Developed by: Id Software
Release Date: September 2011.
Genre: Open World First Person Shooter/Racer
Online/Multiplayer: Yes, 2 player co-op.

So what we know of this game is that it will be using Id Software's new id Tech 5 technology that will combine open world racing as well as FPS action and a Hills Have Eyes Horror type influence in one of the weirder mixes of gameplay seen yet.
RAGE GAME SUMMARY
A brand new IP for id Software (of Doom and Quake fame), this all-new title utilizes the company's unique id Tech 5 technology, aiming to incomparable new levels of graphic presentation in artistic expression and graphic fidelity. Rage offers high-intensity battling and racing gameplay, offering the complexity of race track dynamics and tactics (including a monetary system where you can invest winnings from races to improve your vehicles and character) and the action of a FPS when you take to foot in combat scenarios.

RAGE BRAND NEW DETAILS
The Blu-ray issue

Since Rage is running on the powerhouse id Tech 5 engine, the developer is having a tough time squeezing everything onto strandard DVDs for the PC and 360 releases.

"We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just... we can't cut it into a third like that," Carmack says.

"We can cut it into two pieces. We've got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn't make an arbitrary cut. But Doom 4 is being set up so that it's almost certainly going to be cut up to three DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they've got the ability because of the way it's structured."

"They also comment about all the versions shown, save for the Mac one (as that is a week behind), and say "they all looked quite comparable."

PC: more anti-aliasing, higher resolution, faster graphical page in times for textures.

PS3: took a lot more time early on learning it to ensure that it is up to speed with other versions, essentially. Carmack says more "sweat equity had to be put into" it and "there's a little bit more theoretical raw performance" that gave them "a little bit more headroom."

X360: easier to get where they are now.

Game is being developed with controller first in mind (X360 pad on PC version demo'ed) because Carmack says, " . . . the largest chunk of our market's going to be on the consoles."

Multiplayer planned, but unrevealed because they don't want to promise something and have to cut or change it before release.

RAGE won't be like Doom 3, where you killed the bad guy and that was it -- turn the game off and you were done," says creative director Tim Willits. After the main story is complete, players can continue to explore the world, earn all of the upgrades, go for achievements, and compete for the best times on the racing leaderboards."

-Open World FPS using Id's new Tech 5 engine.

-Takes place 80 years after a devastating asteroid collides with earth and kills most of civilization.

-The player controls a character that was part of Project Eden, a program that buried hundreds of pods or "arks" containing 12 people in cryosleep that would aid in rebuilding society once they emerge from cryosleep. The players ark opens sooner than it was supposed to due to an earthquake.

-The asteroid caused mutations to some people so there will be mutants and stuff.

-You get a vehicle that you get to keep throughout the whole game (it appears that way anyways), that you can upgrade and personalize. "Unlike in other games where vehicles are disposable, in Rage, we want your vehicle to be an extension of you first-person avatar".

-The hero will be a nameless silent protagonist.

-There appears to be quest like structure to the game, you get quests from people and complete them.

-No good/evil mechanic in the game.

-You can build stuff like weapons and sentry bots with an engineering mechanic, or you can purchase them.

-Regeneration health system so no med packs.

-There are races that you can compete in to get certificates used to purchase exclusive upgrades and parts. There will also be race leaderboards. You can do vehicle combat during the races as well and get bonuses for destroying opponents.

-There will be the ability to play stealthy if that's what you prefer over guns blazing. The article describes a mission that involves guiding a remote control car with a bomb on it to infiltrate an enemy hideout.

-There is a show called Mutant Bash TV that you can participate in, it's like a battle arena that is televised.

An better and hopefully bigger look at RAGE next month coming at Quake Con (August 13th onwards).

Source: http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/100/1003292p1.html
Convention goers hoping to catch a glimpse of Rage, id Software's long-developed first-person shooter, may have gotten their wish.

EA sent out a press invitations for Quake Con with news that Rage will indeed be at the show.

"The first look at the next revolution in FPS from id Software," the invitation reads.

If you can't wait until August 13th for when Quake Con kicks off, id released a teaser website for the game.

Look around, click, and enjoy.

Not enough information has been released about this game yet to start judging it, but a cross between MotorStorm and a Far Cry-esque FPS developed by id Software sounds irresistible.

This is one of the few games you would call a must buy before you actually see any of it.

Carmack always makes efficient and god-like game engines, and id Tech 5 looks no different.

The PS3 version will be the definitive console version due to the amount of data that is able to be stored on a Blu-ray disc, not to mention that it will be a PC port and not an Xbox port.

Commander Keen, Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake and Rage. :thumbsu:

That trailer looks good, although compared to previous trailers it seems like they have changed their direction a bit.

I don't know if I would call it a must have title but I am interested in seeing what this becomes.

I guess the fact that even though Blu Ray discs are bigger, we have to remember they don't contain a CPU or GPU. That's the PS3's job....

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=220530

The Xbox 360 and PC versions of id's Rage sport higher framerates than the PlayStation 3 version, the latest issue of Edge magazine reveals.

In a ten-page reveal in its latest issue, Edge writes that the Xbox 360 version of Rage - which uses id's new Tech 5 engine - matches the 60fps framerate of the PC version, while PS3 runs at just "20-30fps".

Still got PLENTY of time to lock that framerate down if they choose to actually attempt that.

carmack is a hoot.....

first kicking xbox fanboys in the nuts with the bluray space issue....

then kicking Sony fanboys in the arse with the frame rate thingamajig issue....

sounds suspiciously like something a Nintendo fanboy would do...... turn the HD nerdz against each other.....

remember he tried to get Nintendo to release a PC clone of NES Mario way back in the John Romero days and admits to playing the Wii the most with his kid >,>

very sneaky :/

Wouldn't NOT developing games on Nintendo consoles be a worse 'kick in the nuts' though? 1 game is all that id have made for a Nintendo console this gen with another supposedly on the way but not even guaranteed of ever coming.

While PS3, 360, PC and MAC still get the best of what id have to offer.

I know which I prefer anyway.

thats just his day job >,>

Nintendo is his first love :)
True, but who cares what he plays. Wouldn't you rather he developed for the console instead or as well?

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but the Wolfenstein beta has been leaked.

It's being developed by Raven though, so I might give it a miss for now. They sure do know how to ruin a game.

*cough* Quake 4 *cough*

RAGE and how it's going 'Back to Basics' with the FPS genre and how they plan on differing themselves from the Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein games. Also a good insight into the id Tech 5 engine's power.

IGN AU - RAGE: BACK TO BASICS
In an industry that loves its buzzwords, id are just as prone to their headline-grabbing ability. Id Tech 5, as its' known (a follow-on from id Tech 4, used on Doom 3), is about as close to hands-off content creation as the developer comes these days. John Carmack, Rage's Technical Director, is spearheading an internal movement towards improving the way in which engines handle textures – reducing the need for repeating textures, which in turn gives birth to environments that look stunningly realistic – without the need to significantly boost polygon rendering techniques.

The results speak for themselves – but the implications for game design are far more interesting and subtle. Speaking with Tim Willits, Creative Director on Rage, he describes id Tech 5 as fundamental to their design process these days. "The cornerstone of id Tech 5 is megatexture technology; it allows us to make the entire world unique and different. The days of 'space station followed by space station followed by space station' are a thing of the past."

The most direct impact is that id Tech 5 takes the pressure off of artists and environmental artists who, these days, seem to be running on a treadmill of ever-increasing geometric complexity as the defining visual trait. Texture effects and clever use of shading and lighting can take the emphasis off complex geometry, which in turn helps designers craft less processor-intensive environments.

Beyond Mutant Bash, it seems id's other breakaway gameplay element is racing – and, as you might expect, it's just as brutal as the rest of the game. After entering the races in Big Town to compete for racing certificates (needed to upgrade your ride with the local greasemonkey), gunplay takes a small sidestep and you buckle into a lap-based destruction rally of sorts. You're still compelled to look after number-one (namely, yourself and your ride), but when you're not jostling for the pole position, you're blowing up your competitors and littering the track with their scrap.

At this stage, it's not clear if your ride is available between races as a form of transportation between towns (though, early preview cutscenes do show cars 'tailing it up to Big Town). However, we can easily imagine hauling butt in a souped-up dune buggy, splattering mutants and chasing down marauding bandits in between missions.

ID should learn from Blizzard - you don't need to sell out to shit consoles to make money. The fact RAGE is being simultaneously developed for consoles and PC automatically means it will be shit on PC.This has been proven ad nauseum.

Who would have thought? The makers of the greatest FPS of all time have fallen to making an FPS for CONSOLES.It is depressing.

Blizzard are pretty much the outlier and the exception to the rule.

the playing field has completely changed from when ID were indie heroes and treated like rock stars...... there is so much competition now ....especially with First Person Shooters.

In those days, you could get away with murder...... eg: John Romero and his hilarious ###$Up at Ion Storm spending 13 million dollars of Eidos's moolah putting arcade machines, candy dispensers and big screen tvs at their offices and delivering shit.

The tech bubble has long burst and that means that developers have to make money....and this means consoles.

Very impressive preview showing the game getting closer and closer to completion, with some stunning screenshots to boot.

IGN - RAGE PREVIEW
Tim Willits wanted to stress one thing when he recently gave an extended demo of Rage: this is the next big thing from id software. Remember, these are the guys that invented the shooter through timeless classics like Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake. This is the company with a technical lead that dabbles in rocket science in his spare time. Rage isn't a spin-off, an add-on, or a one-off. This is the best, current example of what happens when id goes all-in on a new franchise.

And based on what was shown in that demo, that means that gamers should prepare to be blown away.

So after IGN gave RAGE their best of E3 title, everyone has been bragging about this title. How good it looks for a console title running at 60pfs on both consoles and just how visceral, smart and polished it looks for a title that won't arrive until 2011.

RAGE IMPRESSIONS
It's rare to see a game that looks so crisp and runs so smoothly on a console, but that's exactly what id Software seems to have accomplished with Rage. It's the studio's first big budget release since Doom 3, and id's commitment to giving gamers a stunning visual experience is apparent. Dusty valleys choked with weeds and crisscrossing rock ridges make the environments seem natural and realistic, and despite the impressive draw distance that lets you see far down arid valleys there's no framerate hitching. The style is certainly something we've seen a lot of recently – an arid post-apocalyptic world that may remind many of Fallout or Borderlands – but in my mind there's no question that RAGE is the best looking of all of them.

Check the running game out right here.
