I read an article this morning where Patty Cummins was asking for way around getting more overs in due to rain breaks. A great idea Patty. But what about the rest of the time as well.
With the fast draining grounds that we have as test venues now days, there should be no reason why players from both sides can be on the ground warming up, going through their paces, when conditions are good for play.
We have long been robbed of cricket time due to the slow over rate provided by all cricketing nations and even state cricket here is WA.
Even with an extra half an hour, making a days play, six and a half hours, we find the teams are still maybe four or five over short.
The cricket spectator , who has paid big money to go see 90 overs, is being robbed of getting his monies worth.
I think the umpires need to be far more pro active in making the captains hasten the time between overs and stop them holding so many mid over conversations.
In the past, we had teams bowling 100, eight ball overs in a day. And no extra time.
That is 800 balls compared to a sometimes 540 balls, in a days play. That is 260 less balls in todays game. Yet the spectator is paying more now than back in those 800 ball days. Much more.

If the mods want, they can change this to the post four and a half day tests.

monitor the over rates, session by session.

30 overs to be bowled per session and if the bowling team fall short then penalise them 10 runs per over ?
(taking into account rain, umpires flapping about discussing the light, condition of ball etc and running repairs etc, or batting team stalling etc )

the batsman have to stop these constant hold ups with drinks being run out to them etc etc.

not sure how to penalise a batting side batting last, desperately trying to save a match are wasting time, when runs are irrelevant.
