Our judicial system is a joke. I was just reading a story in our local paper where a ex prison guard punched his then partner in the head and face as she cowered on the ground. She then tried to lock herself up in the bathroom to call police but he kicked the door down, threw her mobile in the toilet and continued punching her before trying to choke her. He then verbally abused her before he began punching her in the head and face again. His actions were influenced by alcohol. Then you hear the judge babble on about how some cases of such serious and prolonged assaults involving such extreme violence meant a fully suspended sentence was not an option before handing him a nine month jail term to be suspended after two months served.

What an absolute joke. This bloke is going to possibly serve 2 months in jail when he should be locked up for 10 years minimum.

Can you imagine what this bloke would have got up to with unlimited power over people he didn't love in a system that shuts it's eyes?

Stunning, you can see the intermixing of Russian/Mongolian/Native Siberian heritage right there. Reminds me of the Nuristanis in Afghanistan, who some experts say have links to Alexander's Macedonian soldiers.

The Afghans are arguably the toughest mofos on the planet.

Remarkable people and a meshpot of history and cultures.
Culturally speaking, it's one of the most fascinating places in the world, despite the Taliban doing their absolute best to implement homogeny (or is it hegemony? I always get those two mixed up). It's too bad that it's effectively completely off-limits for tourists. Although I did read an interesting piece the other week about an increase in European backpackers in Kabul in the last few years, who pretty much Airbnb their trip instead of staying in the recommended hotels with lots of security.

One of my uni lecturers talked about his extensive travels in his youth ( I'm guessing this would have been about mid-80s) throughout the Middle East and Afghanistan. IIRC He said that in those times, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan were some of his favourite places he visited and lamented what war had done to some of the cultural icons of those places and its prohibitive effect on tourism. Though he also said that even travelling the ME these gets an exaggerated stigma in regards to risk and encouraged the students to do so. Personally, Iran and Jordan are near the top of my list of places I want to visit.

You are right, Hegemony is more like leader, alpha dog, ultimate boss, etc.

I really enjoyed this series on Afghanistan:

Definitely want to do Iran, a lot of history there.

Absolutely, and Tehran is one of the most picturesque cities in the world as well. Those snow-capped mountains .

Haha and sorry for the edit while you were replying the first time.

Are you being cheeky Rob?
Not at all.

It's a declaration of alliance with Trumpism. Which is isolationist, nativist, anti-immigration, anti-globalist, and in no small part racist. You wouldn't go out in a MAGA hat if you wanted people to think you're not racist, and didn't want the approval of racists. Especially not to a political rally.

So it’s a bit like people that wear the Australian flag and call themselves patriots? Or having a bumper sticker that says “I grew here you flew here”?

Side note, could you imagine Aussies buying in to a politician like the yanks do? Your average Aussie would’nt even know who’s running our state or country, just that we don’t like them.
No, as my political science lecturer told all first years, Australian’s are quite lazy when it comes to politics, citing the fairly limited response to the Whitlam removal.

Would highly recommend it. I've been there 30+ times due to business interests, mainly in Tehran, but did spend time in Ahwaz, Esfehan and Shiraz. Went to Persepolis a couple of times and it is absolutely sensational.
Check out Mr fancy pants "business" man.

The pomegranate flavoured alcohol-free beer was a personal highlight of my time there.

Fair to say we differ somewhat on our interpretation of the word "vermin".

Which led me to ponder.....

Since mice, for example, are widely considered vermin....what would it be like if all mice were actually life-sized Alyssa Milano's?

I'd be getting me a cheese house for starters.

Thank you TOD, for saving Ms. Milano's good name (honestly K4E - "vermin"? Really? That's terrible!), and for always giving us something interesting to ponder. I wish I could think things like that. Well, perhaps not about Alyssa Milano specifically, and I kind of just want to give her a sweater right now, but still...all I ever think is "what if spiders were as big as humans? We'd be eliminated as a species in about 4 days."

Which I know isn't really all that scary for you guys, cos you all live in "Kingdom of the Spiders" down there anyway. But I'll take the cheese house any day.
