Re: John Butcher

Highly doubt we'll have to use more than a 2nd rounder on him.

Sheedy is the only flog who'd throw one of his picks around just to spite us....but I still highly doubt it.

Dylan is too small and unproven for anyone to flirt with a first rounder.

If we're totally committed to him all clubs can do it to spite us and I wouldn't bet that any won't. St Kilda did it to the dogs re Cordy.

Re: John Butcher

There's plenty more who play Dylan's role compared to Cordy. The possibility is definitely there that someone will bid their first rounder, I highly doubt they will though...sort of an unwritten rule between clubs.

GWS are not allowed to bid for F/S selections :)

Im sure I heard Sheedy and GC cant bid on the father sons.

On OWAAT Darcy referred to Cordy as being a top 3 pick if not for the F/S rule. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case but he was definitely a top 10 prospect and was take with pick 14, which was seen to be a bargain.

It's a different situation with Dylan. He isn't as highly rated and he missed the champs through injury.

Who knows, maybe we are keeping him on the DL so that we can pick him up cheaply.

Imagine the outcry from Sheedy if we had a F/S who was regarded as the outright best player in the draft.

Wouldn't that be bliss!
I know .. I would love to upset the Master Shyte Talker himself.

How can anyone beleive the crap that comes out of his mouth ?

Especially when it comes to drafting:

2005 - "We would have taken Paddy Ryder at #1, ahead of Marc Murphy"

and then who can forget this gem, as can be seen from the attached Draft Day Interview with Kevin Sheedy:

2006 - "Jay Neagle was rated to be about Pick #13 in 2006 National Draft".

Really hope you're right but Brad Scott said on Fox that he would have no hesitation forcing a team to use it's first pick for a f/s. Not confident of that unwritten rule.

Thanks for the laugh. :D

Neagle at pick 13...hahahaha

We should bid for Tom Mitchell. :p

Father-Son bidding is yet another example of the AFL's reactionary behaviour. A few clubs and the media make a fuss of a club getting a gun for nothing, so the AFL come out with a knee jerk decision. Just like the tanking debate.

If another club can't out bid you for a Father-Son pick, what's the point in letting them have a shot at the player?

The current system has made a mockery of even having the Father-Son rule. The bottom team could bid for Buckley or Mitchell using pick five. The eighth placed side would bid using pick 19. Port would never take that risk on Buckley, but a top eight side could chance their arm and snooker a club into using their first pick. The muppets at the AFL thinks this band aid system and the salary cap will create the utopia they call an even competition.

The AFL should have an independent body that rates the Father-Son players to make the player's club pick them in the first, second or third round.

The Dogs have offered Daniel Cross a one year deal.

Possibly because they have Wallis and Liberatore coming through.

Is Cross too old and slow to play an inside role with Carlton for the next two seasons?

Cross turns 29 in March.

Cross is a stalwart of the Dogs, there is no chance of him leaving.

Yes. Plays it about as hard as anyone, and maybe it is just the WB's this year, but he seems to be half a yard off the pace...at 29 would be no upgrade on Curnow with a full pre-season under his belt.

Random players that are of interest that may not cost the earth -

Simon Hogan
Taylor Hunt
Nick Suban
Sharod Wellingham
John McCarthy
David Mackay

Suban, Wellingham, Mackay and the Geelong players would be off limits. We'd have to pay over the odds to get them. Cats have done well to survive without Ablett, but they're still an ageing team. They wouldn't want to lose Hogan and Hunt who are young and quick. Don't know enough about McCarthy's character, but his post-GF celebrations with Beams doesn't reflect too kindly on him.

They would?

Cat's may have an ageing list, but a lot of those ageing stars are out of contract this year...still need to bed down deals with Bartel, Enright, Chapman et al. Granted Hogan is more likely than Hunt.

Similarly if the Pies sign Thomas things must be starting to get a bit thin in the middle ranks. Wellingham is class. Don't know a thing about McCarthy's character...people more informed than me (and the press) would need to make that call. Looks an AFL standard footballer though.

Suban only a chance I imagine if any of the Bower stuff comes to fruition. As his buddyI certainly hope not (wish he would give me some football to comment on though).

McCarthy along with Fasolo classic cases of "Bad players in good teams" IMO.

Wellingham, Hogan, Hunt and Suban I like, haven't seen enough of Mackay though.

Hogan as mentioned previously by K1 would be good and gettable.

I think it applies for McCarthy, who is average at best, but Fasolo has the potential to be a really good player.

Hogan and Hunt wouldn't cost Geelong the world, so why wouldn't they re-sign and stick around?

Hunt would see a spot opening up with Wojcinski 31 and an outside chance to retire in the next 12 months.

Hogan would probably stick by the club that gave him time to get his life sorted out.

Macaffer would be the out of contract Collingwood player I'd enquire about.

Collingwood faces massive battle to retain stars
Leon Davis, Nathan Brown and Brent Macaffer are all out of contract at year's end.
