Anyone else think it's stupid how every single public holiday we get news stories about the need for shops to be open. Surely people can find things to do that doesn't involve shopping.

Couldn't agree more :thumbsu:

It's one day. Surely people can survive without all the shops being open for one day.

Plus I'm sure the people working in retail wouldn't mind the day off.

Weekend (including public holiday) trading has been legal in the eastern states for years. Having lived here for most of the last 15 years, I can safely say that the sky won't fall in - and being able to shop at convenient times on convenient days is a massive improvement on the restrictive situation in SA.

Adelaide's trading hours are ridiculous and one of the reasons why SA is so poorly regarded by those in the eastern states. Mind you, WA is no better...

When most things are closed I'd like to have something to do other then go to some public place where everyone is it because they've got the day off

Shopping is a good way to kill a day, Though, a few days here and there doesn't bother me, but the Easter long weekend is a bitch, they need to get some Good Friday football, and/or have Friday/Sunday trading, worst weekend in the year outside of the highly religous people who take Easter seriously

WA still doesn't have Sunday trading! But then they recently CHOSE to be 3 hours behind the eastern states in summer
To be fair to them, the bulk of their population either lives on the far western side of the state (ie the coast) or the far north (where the daylight period varies much less between summer & winter). This is a very different situation to the eastern states, where the population centres are on the eastern side of the time zone - this makes a bigger difference than you would expect.

WA trading laws are a joke!

The City, Freo, Mandurah and Joondalup can all trade 7 days a week

Now i work for a large retail chain, and the Joondalup store is in my area for our company awards rankings. Yet they can open on a Sunday, while i have to keep my doors closed. A massive advantage for excelling in the awards process

Come November 1st though, Midland (where i work) and Armadale will also be able to open, while other shopping centres remain closed

Its bullshit. Then, when they bring in 7 days over the whole state, shoe retailers and a few other groups will not be able to open, while everyone else will have choice! (according to an early proposal)

Make it simple:

All stores can trade 7 days a week with the following exceptions:

Good Friday, Easter Monday and Christmas day are closed

Everything else, you should choose whether you want to open or not

Easy. Its not like retail managers will work extra days, you just get to pick what days you have off

I agree in parts of your post, but disagree with others, just wanted to voice this, but not go any further because I'll get hyped up over nothing, and make a fool of myself, adding nothing to the thread. (It's on the religious topic)

Do you agree with closing for religious days, or against it?

Easter Monday has no religious significance. Other than that, I agree with you - I'm in favour of trading 363 days per year (364 in leap years).

So South Australian farmers are the most efficient, yet they lose the largest share of entitlements (which are already the lowest in the country).

And the reductiosn don't even start in Victoria for another 7 years after us.

Jeez, youd just wish for a day the river flowed the other way, I'd take a shit in the river and wave it off to Victoria.
Any chance we could do it so it only hits Carlton?

I feel the reporting in the media about trading on public holidays largely reflects the poor media we have in this state. Where is the outcry? I don't hear it. It's just an easy story to do on a quiet news day that's all.

Give me a break with this bullshit, 'they are all casual workers and need the cash' arguement. They're just plebs, they don't deserve the day off but I DO, and I wanna go to the shops, THEY should be there.

I do not work in retail, just one of the many believers that believe it is actually a POSITIVE point of difference our state has. It's pretty much a loud minority who want change, or whinging interstaters who happen to be in this great state of ours on these days and get interviewed by shitty Adelaide journalists.

Go redbacks today, smash NSW.

Speaking of, can you believe the Sunday Mail was out stalking the guys in the Brimble case on the '8th anniversary' of her death. Seriously. They got off!, as unseemly as that might be to some ... get over it. Do we expect these guys (none of the main 3 who were staying in the room she was found dead in) to sit at home and never leave the house ever again?

How the hell is that newsworthy and what justifies then contacting the family all over again for a quote about 4 blokes, their partners and some random others going out for dinner to the House of Chow? which apparently went for 4 hours and wine and 'spirits mixed with coke' were consumed. People were also witnessed wearing T-shirts and gold jewellery.

Here''s the article http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/...f-dianne-brimble/story-e6frea8c-1225936505884.

Basically put, gutter journalism at it's worst and I hope Mediawatch hound The Advertiser over it. Interesting that you can't add comments to the article - are AdelaideNow afraid of the backlash they're going to get from the article...

I just read this on news.com.au funnily enough. What a ridiculous story. Surely the writer of the story committed an illegal act by stalking these guys? Journos are an absolute joke.
