This kid epitomises the recruitment strategy put in place at Richmond, bringing in kids with very strong personalities, kids that will take ownership and kids that will make fantastic leaders into the future.

Ellis and Vlastuin are huge pick ups for our club, and it shows that picking up kids with very strong core values (along with great skills of course) promotes hard work ethics within the playing group. I look forward to seeing what they can bring in their 3rd and 2nd years respectively.

Yep totally agree Dr Mike. I think this is all part of the cultural change. Was never going to happen fast enough for many, but when it occurs. It will give RFC sustained success as Dimma has been focusing on all along. He Dimma, has not given us (supporters) any BS (spin) that I'm aware of. He's just stayed the course..... He was always my preferred coach and each year my belief in him just grows. A gradual and methodical build that will (hopefully) be an irresistible force.....RFC......Go You TIGERS !!!!

A big question, if Martin were up for draft now, would he be selected?

Good question, we won't ever know DrMike
But I think after next season teams will be climbing over each other for him....que drool icon. I just had the feeling he was about to explode, if not next year definately the year after.

Well if he doesn't want to stay after this contract we may have to look at trading him.

Just watch the video DrMike......Wow!!! for a young man who's just turned 20 (I think). The potential upside for Tigga, brando, Conca etc.....cue Hommer drool (we really do need an icon).

He's also got some talent, it must be said (and yes, DrMike said it).
But yes, a willingness to set and work towards goals is good. It should really be a given, but they are kids when drafted I suppose.

Yes. He is perhaps in the top 5 most talented players in the league.

The great thing about picking great characters and leaders like Vlas, Ellis, Conca, Astbury, Grimes and you can probably add Houli, Chaplin and Maric to that list is they instil a set of core values and beliefs within our football club.

I look at Dan Hannebery and wonder if he had gone anywhere but sydney would he have been as good as he is. Probably not the same as Dusty for off field issues but still he was a wayward child who was brought into line by the strong culture at the bloods.

Continually picking the right kids with the right attitude brings about a peer group change especially for a kid like Dusty. Are we ready right now to grab a Dayle Garlett? I'm not sure but in 5 years time when that group named above are in their prime they will be making sure that the kids coming through underneath them will be working as hard as possible to get the best out of themselves.

^The way he spoke in his season review tape reaffirmed this for me. Has all the characteristics of a young Cotch.

On field he can literally be anything in the future. No doubting his attitude and work ethic at all, personally I see him developing into a harder version of Lids :) To say I love this kid is an understatement!

Also think personality type is important. Outgoing individuals in a team are important especially in leadership roles. Look at Rance and JR, both extroverted and likeable characters. They would be fun to be around and this type of personality can often help, and give advice to young players without giving offence or sounding arrogant. Don't need too many extroverts, but a few are vital.
I remember not long ago that we had a team of introverts, many players wouldn't say boo (IIRC it was mid 2000's when David King coached as an assistant, he said RF team was very quiet and reserved). Nobody was willing to jump up and give advice and this impeded development of some players.
Good recruiting by the tiges since by combining leadership, attitude and personality.

regards FFS

The 1 thing I took away from this video and all the others is the hurt from the EF loss. In a sense I think this loss will be the making of a better mindset for the group than any pointless game loss during the year. In a way you have to have these losses to further steel your no give up attitude moving fwd.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised

What about the Beans?

There's that many that are coming through by the time Cotch does hand it back as Newman did, it won't be for at least 5 to 8 years i can see even them being too old.

Actually from what I've heard (thank you Richmond TT) he's up there as well

Without getting too excited about it all character and mental ability is so important to future development of players. The research on genius has found that once ther natural talent is there genius is typically associated with hard work. So if we have a choice between players of equal talent choose the best attitude and character.

Big fan of our drafting strategy of good kicks and good characteristics. Talent is obviously important but without a strong culture and club values, players won't be able to make the most of their ability. The young leaders at the club will eventually become the senior guys in the rooms one day and it will be their leadership, experience and standards that the next batch of young kids will play and adhere to.
