The idea of academies in Queensland and New South Wales to identify talent and provide a pathway to the AFL as a lure away from league or union with a view to expanding the national talent base is a good one. However, they should be (and should always have been) run by the AFL. Because otherwise they aren't providing a pathway for elite talent to the AFL so much as providing a pathway for elite talent to a particular club. This isn't expanding the national talent base. The AFL should take their hands out of their pockets and do something with all that money other than prop up unsustainable and mismanaged Victorian teams.

They can take over the multicultural academies too, so we get fewer rorts like Quaynor. If the League wants to run every aspect of football in Australia (even though that should be the Commission's job), they can put more effort into expanding the game than just starting new clubs in areas with large populations but no football background.
