Player Watch Reilly O'Brien - Re-Signed to End of 2028

I know this is accepted wisdom, but why? If there are less interchanges wouldn't there be more need than ever for more running players?
At the very least you'd maybe want to be able to rest your ruckmen forward, rather that rotating them off, so it may depend on how big you want your forward line to be for periods. If we add O'Brien then we'd potentially have Tex, Jenkins and Jacobs/O'Brien in the forward line.

No sub next year. 4 on the bench. Extra ruck?

If you had two ruckman that can "rest" in the forward or back, you can save those rotations primarily for mid!!!

I don't think either of Jacobs or O'Brien meet this criteria.

Guys like Jacobs and ROB are ruck work horses, who thrive off massive ruck minutes. Better off continuing with Jacobs rucking for 80% plus with Jenkins 2nd ruck and giving Jacobs the odd game off.

Unless you have 2 super athletic ruckman or are completely devoid of decent key forwards, the days of playing 2x dinosaur ruckman are over. People blame the sub rule for this, but in reality this was being phased out before the sub rule came into play.

We were very quick to use Tippett as our 2nd ruck/fwd in '08, at the same time Collingwood were using Leigh Brown as their 2nd ruck.

I heard that Essendon were looking at offering him an upgrade to their senior list if we didnt this year. Posted it on the draft and trade forum awhile ago.
I would assume that there must of been some interest from some teams and so the club decided to wrap him up.
Good move. Most rucks dont show anything for the first 4 years, so for him in his first year to show that other than his goal kicking he was ready for AFL already is a massive indication he could well be a future gun.

love this signing, ROB will develop into an elite ruckman

Yeah, dont see many young Rucks do as consistently well in the SANFL - very promising. And another rookie list win from the club.
There's (quite rightly) been a lot of criticism of the way our club has been run in recent years, but we should acknowledge that our development and our strike rate with late picks has been phenomenal.

Great news for the kid, he's had a great season in the SANFL.

I wonder how the club will manage him when he's ready to play AFL footy with Jacobs the obvious first ruck at the moment and Jenkins seemingly in top form. Even with the sub rule gone I can't see us playing all three regularly. Such a difficult proposition, bringing in new rucks when you already have a good one.

Great news! Will be interesting to see how we handle the need to give him substantial game time to keep him interested in staying with us beyond this contract. I doubt someone of his talent would be prepared to languish in the SANFL weaiting for Sauce to age.

There is nothing stopping the club keeping him on the rookie list next year. As an example, Jack Frost from Collingwood was announced a 2 year deal on 29 September 2014. For 2015, he's a 3rd year rookie listed player (albeit the nominated rookie). For 2016, he will be on their senior list.
I think they did that to give flexibility in draft week - and they passed on their last selection.

However, this is a rare situation. Most players that sign deals are upgraded the next draft period. We have now re-signed 2 rookies, so could potentially take just 1 new draftee (to meet requirements).

ROB has shown a lot for a new draftee - very much worth continuing with him. Hope he gets a handful of games next year.

Who out of the current uncontracted players will get delisted? I think Brodie martin is a chance to be delisted?

Pods gone. Martin gone. Osborn gone.
Siggins/Shaw/Wright - debatable.

Rest need to stay (Wilson/Ramsey another rookie year)

Wouldn't think Martin's chances were great to stay on again but I'd have him a far better chance to remain on the list over Siggins.

Wright would be a lot safer then the likes of Shaw/Martin.

Also have Reilly coming off our senior list.

Siggins gone. I dont think we will keep on Ramsey or Wilson.
Osborne has shown alot more this season than before. The club has stuck with him for awhile now and just as hes making improvements it would be strange to let him go. But we do have alot of rucks on our list now.

Osborn doesn't have to go. He's a free hit outside the list and the salary cap as there is no restriction on how long you keep an 'international' rookie. You can also have more than one of those on your list.

This is his 3rd year. That's his limit.

11.1 (d) A Player may remain on a Club’s List as an Alternative Talent for a maximum of 3 years.

Fair enough, I looked at the AFLPA agreement recently and there was no year restriction mentioned in there.

It's great to hear what people are saying about ROB. I'm not an avid watcher of the magoo's so haven't seen much of him, but I'm excited to see how he goes now. Surely no sub in 2016 will give him a window into the seniors. The comments I've read about him on here this year suggest he's on track with guys like Atkins and Knight, and I've loved everything they've served up so far.

How long have we been without guys who play a bit "unsociably". I'm pumped about our future. Get into em ROB!

I'm starting to have a hint of a smell of a late change against the Cats?

Bicks (the real one, not you :p) suggested he may have been brought in for his debut as sub, but didn't happen. He isn't an emergency either. But since there is no SNAFL for us, you'd expect the entire team to travel over for the game.
