Report from a Games Show!

As most of you are aware i get to go to the Gold Coast twice a year for a games show. I get to play the newest releases, some of the bigger games coming out soon and see video of stuff thats a while away

I just got back tonight, and want to write up report for you guys. I thought i may aswell do it tonight, as i won't have time tomorrow to write a long winded post tomorrow, as i will be relieving my wife of our son who she has looked after all week. I will have moments to come in and answer questions (if you have any) and keep up to date. I will try to answer them promptly and as best as i can

We get 7 mins at each booth (and we have to visit 78 of them) so some games i didn't get a heap of time with them (some games were set up over 2 booths so i got a bit more time with them.

These are the best games i felt were worth discussing:

Modern Warfare 2: (P) Yes i played it. Yes its awesome. Played Spec Ops mode. Blood splatter is not that bad and you don't really notice it like you do in the vids. We all know about how good this will be. Only dissapointing thing was that they didn't have multiplayer running like they did with COD 4 two years back

Gran Turismo 5: (P) Sony probably had the best product there this year. I will get to the other titles later though. GT5 was very good, but sense of speed was not so great. Sony rep seemed very confident of a release not too long after Japan.

Heavy Rain: (P) Awesome. Had a level demoed to us in a theatre. Then we got to play it on the floor. Had 3 systems set up and a new level (from the demo) to play. All 3 of us had different endings to a very short scene. Graphics are amazing. Can't wait!

God of War 3: (P) Yep, this ones a winner. Great combo's, tonnes of blood. Taking people's heads off. We all know what to expect. It is looking sexy and improvements are being made!!!

Mass Effect 2: (P) I don't really like RPG's. Got to play a level that had more shooting to do with it. Enjoyed it. Graphics are UNBELIEVABLE! Fans will be making their pants messy and rightly so.

Uncharted 2: (P) YEP

Avatar: (D) Based on James Cameron's movie. Out in December. Has full 3D (3D TV's not for sale in Aus till early 2010) Showed it to us in 2D and 3D. One of the most amazing things i have ever seen!!!! Absolutley blew me away!

Left 4 Dead 2: (P) Played the censored version. Still the same game, minus the gore. EA have another meeting booked with the OFLC on October 22 regarding the original version. There is a slim chance we could still see it uncensored. Have to wait till then

Forza 3: (P) Sense of speed was certainly better than GT5, but it was a near finished code. Nice game. Driving fans needn't look further for a fix.

DJ Hero: (P) i didn't actually play it myself (i was saving myself for MW2) but watched it for 2 booths. Track list is amazing. Daft Punk are by far the coolest characters in their robot suits. Bets mix? how about Ice, ice baby and Can't touch this? Looks fun to play.

Assassin's 2: (P) Seems to be the same game, but its not. Lots of little touches will make for a more satisfying game overall. Disn't look as shiny as number 1, but it wasn't final code.

Borderlands: (P) This game is sexy. Uses the COD control method, so i found it very easy to pick up and play. Graphics are great. Best part? Playing co-op can turn into a mini deathmatch and you can challenge your friends for power ups and the such without leaving the game.

Splinter Cell Conviction: (P) a lot of similarities with Batman (or is that vice versa?) Didn't blow me away, but was solid. Graphics are nice

GTA BFGT: (P) Gay Tony is here for some over the top fun. It is. This will be all kinds of awesome.

FF XIII: (V) Big news is they are very hopeful of an April/ May release! Another graphically appealing game.

Darksiders: (P) Looks like God of War. Thats no bad thing. Seems like it should go well. I enjoyed it and looks to have a good story line.

Brutal Legend: (P) Thanks to Jack Black for being a funny bastard. Good game too!

New Super Mario Bros: (P) Everyone knows what to expect here. Side scrolling Mario madness with friends. One of the few Wii games owning.

Dante's Inferno: (P) Another God of War clone. Nice graphics. But very samey. Darksiders slightly better.

Bayonetta: (P) DMC with a chick? Yes. Fun? a little, but i think it may get repetitive.

Just Cause 2: (D) Close to best graphics of show. Some of the moves the Rep pulled off were mad. Looks to be a whole lotta fun! Out March next year, could be a must buy!

Dragon Age Origins: (P) Another RPG that will more than satisfy fans. Bioware know their s**t.

Napoleon Total War: (V) speaking of people who know their s**t. Creative assembly have another TW game out. And looks the goods. Again.

There was other stuff too, but i can't be bothered adding it now. I might do tomorrow, or you can ask about a game and i can tell you if it was there!

Now for the bragging bit!!! Free stuff we got:

This one's not free, but is very cool. I can buy a 120GB PS3 for $100. New.
Yes i just bought a PS3, but i will stil be buying this one for $100. Who wouldn't?

MW2:

Played a level with the character "Ghost" leading the way (by radio)

Breached into a room (the one that looks like a shower block) and you have enemies swarming towards you, then they appear in an upper position to your left. And to your right. Once you take care of the guys in front of you, you start shooting the guys above you. While you are busy looking at them, more enemies are coming at you from the front, but this time they have riot shields. Not sure what the diffilculty was set to, but it was on at least hard.

Guns used: AK47, Shotty, and one of the new ones. Looks like an M16A4, but is fully automatic, not just 3 bullet bursts

Controls are much tighter than MW1. Had the same feedback form others too. Get fresh pants ready, its gonna be messy on November 10!

The game seems like a generic shooter. Its the 3D that blows you away. The cut scene looks decidely average (which we told the rep) he told us to have patience. Once the game started, he was in a chopper and the magic started! Can't really describe the awesomeness that the 3D really is!

Night cycle is even more magical. This is the sort of tech that will blow people away

Borderlands

I really love the art work for this game. The cel shading just fits it perfectly. Love the controls (being a COD fan) missions are open world, so its a matter of finding one you want to do. A lot of "find this, bring it back to me, get attacked on the way, here's a reward" type missions

These guys are trying to make something slightly different and should be appluaded for trying something new. This will have a decent following

Couple of games i forgot in the OP

Ashes Cricket (Wii): (P) Get some ice ready, your shoulder will need it. Bowling is hard, Batting is easy. I bowled the 1st over and it went for 34. I batted the next over and it wnet for 30. Was on easiest setting. (played against one of the other guys in my group) MCG looked quite nice and accurate without that "HD polish"

Sabotouer: (P) In black and white, the game is stunning. In colour, its a mess. Hopefully they can fix it. But it looks like another Prototype. (a flop)

Forza ahead of GT5. But Forza was a final build. GT5 was still early code. I am more excited for GT5, but i have had GT3 and GT4 on my PS2. Owners of both consoles will be happy with either game.

Uncharted 2 is just awesome. Can't really say much more than has been done to death in the reviews. Only have to wait till Thursday to find out!!!

that is part of the reason i felt it was so far above the rest in the first place.

Did you ask the guy for an estimated release date for Heavy Rain? Also could you please go into detail about the controls and what you had to do in the level?

When you played Borderlands, how was the enemy range (different types of enemies and difficulties)? Were there many different enemies? Also the developer stated there's over 100 hours of gameplay, would you agree with that from what you saw and played?

Heavy Rain is looking at a February release

Controls can be a little frustrating. But only when in a cramped space. The level we did was in a deli. We are a detective looking for info on a killer. The same killer who killed the shop owners son. He refuses to talk. So you go looking for a puffer and an armed robber comes in. You proceed back towards the robber, and depending which isle you walk down, a different speech options present themselves. But if you walk down the wrong isle, you trip over and startle the robber who puts his gun on you. The 3 endings we had:

Me: i talked him down and he left the shop

1 other: Shopkeeper ended up shot dead

other: Detective ended up shot

Controls are simple. Use the R2 to walk with direction. the 4 control pad buttons are used for 4 different speech options. To get taskes happening you use the six axis to complete them

Quite nice

Didn't see many enemies with Borderlands. But one was a gigantic mutant wolf. Good teamwork saw him defeated in a couple of mins.

They were saying 20-30 hours will see someone through the game and 70-80 for completionists

Just another quick question on Heavy Rain. That level you've played, I've seen the footage for on GameTrailers.

When you start talking to the guy and you're nervous, your options get shakey. Is it hard to read and if you take too long are there consequences?

I wouldn't say its hard to read, but it is slightly disorientating. The more nervous you get, the more it shakes

This is one I'm interested in. I know the game looks absolutely stunning. But what I'm wondering is the scale.

I've heard and seen that the game will have such locations as snow capped mountains, a city, a beachy resort type place as well as a desert type place too along with the regular jungle landscapes. Was much variety in terms of locations demo'd? And did the map really feel like it was on a massive scale?

Rep started on top of a mountain (not snow covered) more of a jungle type and parachuted down to the ground (which was a beach) he actually landed in a boat and took off from there. Went to a base a blew some stuff up, used his grappling hook a bit. Stole a chopper a flew to another mountain (with a casino on top) where an eneny choppe rwas trying to take him down, so he grappled over to that (from his chopper) and took the pilot out and stole the chopper! It was mad!

Game looked huge. From the top of each mountain, you could see heaps.

Lets just hope they find a good way to do the missions in such a big world
