Some people are going to be so disappointed when Reid starts out with some dud games down back.

Expect it people, it will happen. We're just hoping long term he'll be good. Short term he'll no doubt he a bad defender.

I for one don't mind, as long as he shows something.

Exactly. He will lose more battles with his opponent than he wins at first.

I'm expecting a lot of 'Reid is a dud' threads on bifooty in 2009.

LOL seriopusly need a good look at youselves he will take 3-4 yrs to develop fully as a defender.
keep him as the chf or ff he was chosen for.

If he could kick for goal, or was a confident kid i would agree with that but neither are true. He can't finish which negates all the good work he can do to win the ball. He also certainly doesn't project as the sort of guy who is going to handle the poor kicking at goal and the flack that follows to well.

Of course he could do a Tarrant role leading around on the flanks and wings but if he could play KPD that would be more valuable even if it is a longish transition

Agreed which is why I think he should be eased into it. His athletic and agile enough and will offer enough on the rebound for him to play a Kennelly type running half back role. Even if they mix it up between that and taking some of the less physical third talls like Fisher, Welsh etc.

Agreed, although I hope and expect that he will not be thrown to the wolves too early. I'd like to see him played as a floating tall to begin with, then given a few assignments as he finds his feet in the back line.

As a third tall defender I could see him impressing a few people - even opposition naysayers - before the questions regarding his ability to actually man a player begin to gain momentum.

If he can take the opposition's third best forward (depending on size/match-ups) whilst reading the play well enough to know when to help out his team-mates, he might just be what we were missing last year in defence as far as finding a solution to the Buddy/Fevola dilemma. Reid could be the second player up in the contest or chopping off the lead, as I hope we don't try to play freakish forwards one out any longer.

I'd be content with having Reid play more games than not whilst being serviceable. He can build from that and hopefully hold down a more pivotal position in the side from 2010 onwards.

Possible NAB team:

ANTHONY N.BROWN JOHNSON

BARHAM REID BLIGHT

THOMAS STANLEY McCARTHY

DICK CLOKE CORRIE

RUSLING DAWES DIDAK

Rucks: WOOD MAXWELL WELLINGHAM

Inter: Sidebottom L Brown (ruck relief) H Shaw
Bennell Macaffer

This is what i'd like to see:

FB: ----Anthony----N Brown----Maxwell----
HB: -----Shaw-------Reid--------Cox-------

C: -----Clarke----McCarthy----Thomas----
Fol: ----Wood-----Stanley-----Wellingham--

HF: -----Didak------Cloke-------Corrie-----
FF: -----Dick-------Dawes-----McCaffer---

Int: L Brown, Sidebottom, Goldsack, Beams

> Fraser, Rocca, Presti, OBree, Rusling, Swan, Pendles, Davis, Lockyer and Medhurst all rested.

> Maxwell to play as the new captain.

> Wood given plenty of opportunity in the ruck. L Brown to be used as a rest when needed.

> Reid tried out at CHB, and Anthony also in the backline.

> Cox played as an attacking HBF.

> Clarke and Thomas pushed to the wing and midfield and given plenty of game time.

> Stanley played at the centre bounce with McCarthy and Wellingham. Wellingham to be used at times as a tagger.

> Didak and Shaw to be played as senior players and show their commitment to the team. The start of a big season from both of them where they repay the faith shown in them.

> Corrie and L Brown to be given game time to show what they can offer. Corrie played along the HFF, Wing and HBF. L Brown given a crack as KPD and used as a rest for Wood in the ruck.

> Dick and McCaffer given some gametime in and around the forward line.

> Goldsack given the opportunity to impress.

> Sidebottom and Beams given gametime to see what they are capable of. If we progress further in the NAB cup some of the other young blokes trialled as well.

Apologies to Cook, Johnson and Barham who I couldn't fit in.

Pretty sure you can have 6 on the bench for NAB Cup Quicky - 8 if it's really hot.

In that case, I'd add Fraser to the bench and Leigh Brown can play some ruck and some defense as you noted. Fraser does not need to be run into the ground but I reckon we need to get some conditioning into him so he is fit and raring to go round 1. Maybe swap him with Bryan each week over the 4 weeks so they both get eased into the year. Wood definitely to play first ruck though - I agree with you there.

I'd like to see young Dawes play out of the Backline for a quarter or two, just to see how he shapes up runing out of the 50 and squaring up a teammate.

Obviously, I wouldn't know the kid's skills as well as a lot of you on here, but I think that it'd be an interesting experiment.

We did this in the nab challenge last year, didn't really look a backman at all

Let me say first I am not a fan of Stanley or Toovey but they need a chance in the NAB cup. But I would like to see the following team take the field
Anthony, Presti,Corrie
Johnson, N Brown, Dyas
McCarthy Clark Cox
Dick, Dawes, Goldsack
Obree, Russling,McCaffer
Wood Maxwell Wellingham
Cook L Brown, Reid, Bryan, Beams, SideBottom and Toovey & Stanley (because we have to)

This would allow Shaw, Didak, Medhurst, Fraser, Davis, Rocca,Swan, Cloke, Pendles, Thomas to stay in Melbourne

The team would allow us to see if Jack is any good down back he could also take the kick ins, Let Wood ruck all day and let Marty play in the middle. The captain would play as a hard body mid field tagger and change with Goldie as both are hard at it and can go forward.
we know what Bryan, Obree can do but they need to be there also we need game time into Presti and Johno

Cox - in the middle

Rusling - up onto a wing

Dawes - Fullback

Dick - roving wherever he wants

JA - at CHB

just to see how they perform, not as a permanent thing

I'd like to see the following team given a crack:

B: O'Brien Brown Lockyer

HB: Shaw Reid Maxwell

C: Thomas Swan Didak

HF: Corrie Cloke Anthony

F: McCarthy Rusling Dick

R: Wood Davis Pendlebury

I: Fraser Dawes Wellingham Barham Blair Sidebottom

E: Cox Bennell Beams McCaffer

I would definitely expect to see Mehurst, Rocca, Presti and O'Bree rested til later in the campain.

Would love to see Blair, Sidebottom and Barham get a crack. and Bennell, McCaffer and Beams at a later stage also given a taste.

As other have said would like to see Reid given a crack at CHB.

Would like to see McCarthy and Wellingham given plenty of time in the middle. I think its important though that Swan, Davis and Pendlebury are our main mids and they start to gel now for the real season. They could be a very dangerous midfield together.

Very hard side to pick as there are many other players deserving of a go also. Good problem to have though.
