There have been many threads on this issue, but i still don`t understand why
we have to play our our reserves in such a non competitive league!
Who sanctioned this travesty? Lots of posts recently have said about promoting
our reserves to the big time, hah 200 point wins every week does not make a
rookie into an instant Afl ready player! All the other clubs have their reserves
playing in very competitive leagues, where players often play against guys that
they will face in the Afl. Why is it that us supporters, are the only people to see
that this experiment has come to an end If they insist with this arrangement
this club is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And your alternative is......................

I think they should do what the SA and WA teams do and lend individuals to different teams here in Sydney's AFL league. They could also invest more money into this league to try to attract good players from Canberra and beyond. Turn it into something half decent. The long term gains are obvious.
I know they want to have total control over the 2s and see benefits in the 2s playing as a team, but these benefits are far outweighed by the simple fact they dont have any competition either here or in Canberra. Better to split them in 2 and play each other week in, week out than what they are doing now.

The most rediculous aspect is playing a full team of professionals against country amateurs.

Even in VFL they limit the number of AFL players allowed in each affiliated squad and if you pick up Inside Footy Phil Clearey is constantly harping that that there is too many AFL players in some VFL sides!

Stand alone Geelong reigning premiers are always near the top

I think your about 4 years late considering Sandringham have won the last three. The reason they have is because there VFL listed players are in there top 10 each week.

That would be a far worse situation than we currently have, IMO. At least in the SANFL and WAFL, AFL reserves players are playing alongside high quality team mates, many of whom could arguably have played AFL had things fallen their way at the right time.

In contrast, if the Swans players split up and played with SFL teams, they would be by so far the best players in their team that it would be a joke. If anything their skills would diminish because they'd have to play to compensate for the much lower skills of their team mates, and chances are they'd get into very bad habits in the meantime.

There is actually very little evidence either way of whether the ACTAFL provides a decent training ground for AFL level performance because so few of the youngsters have been promoted. But that's largely due to the exceptionally low injury rate the Swans have had in recent seasons, plus the fact they have had a very solid and stable group of players in the 22-28 age category who have formed the core of the team.

Certainly the ACTAFL did Malceski no harm. Nor LRT. Buchanan emerged into a senior player after playing one season in that league (and some under the old Port alignment too) while Schmidt is gradually finding his way. Jack didn't look overawed and I think would be getting more senior games now if he was available. Moore is one who hasn't shown he's able to make the step up but that's not conclusive evidence either way since there are also plenty of very good VFL players unable to make the step up to AFL level. Grundy looked competent enough when he stepped up last season and although he's struggled to impact this year, I want to hold off judgement until he gets an extended run of a few games - rather than in and out of the team on a weekly basis - and until he gets to play a role more akin to that he plays with the reserves team (ie as FF, with Mickey weaving his magic around him and Hall playing more of a true CHF position).

We're going to have to wait until the cycle has changed and the Swans are in more of a development mode before we can really assess whether they're able to develop players in the current competition.

ATTEMPT to get them in the Queensland league. Its still not strong like the VFL, SANFL or the WAFL but is a lot stronger than the NSW leagues and the Brisbane Ressies get more competitive matches. Maybe it would be worth investing some money in this venture.

Maybe today, but could they not throw money at the SFL clubs to import fringe players from other leagues and grow the SFL? I know it would take a little while but it is a better long term strategy than belting teams from canberra every week.

I disagree with the perception of Moore. He was on the cusp of cementing his place when injury finished his year in 2006.He played a couple of games in his first season in 2005 when he was emergency in the premiership team .I believe he is just cruising from week to week this year after two small runs in the firsts.I wouldn't be writing him off yet.
