St Kilda Captain Nick Riewoldt last night underwent arthroscopic surgery after experiencing soreness in his left knee. After careful review, Club doctors made the decision to complete the routine procedure which has an expected recovery period of approximately four weeks.

St Kilda Football Manager Greg Hutchison said, “This week during training Nick was experiencing some discomfort in his left knee, the Club and Nick decided the best option was to operate quickly and ensure he is in peak condition for this year.

“As a result of the arthroscopy Nick will miss the NAB Cup pre-season competition; however he is expected to complete a full recovery program with our strength and conditioning team throughout the next month and be on track for the start of home and away season.”

routine these days. dont think there'd be any concern with this.
I do. He missed a similar period of football last season (can't remember what the injury was though) and it took him months to get back to full form and by then our season was effectively over (even though we still managed to make top 4)

Terrible time for this to happen. St kilda's best player and a genuine superstar of the afl. Could be a massive blow for their tilt at the 09 flag. Then again he can definitely recover in time to be ready for rnd 2 or 3.

The concern is that his knees are an on going problem.

Not a good time to be missing a month of work either.

i guess saints fans will be a little more concerned, especially regarding his importance to the team.

it's a reflection on his playing style imo. definately a forward who seems to get knocked about far more than others....not unlike Kozi.

will be missing out on a fair bit of intensive work, but better to manage it now than during the season.

Again ? Wouldnt be a preseason without Riewoldt having some sort of interruption.

Went to another level last year IMO. Champion players drag their team kicking and screaming from the brink back into contention by their own efforts. Absolutely superb second half of the season.

He always seems to have a slow start or interrupted preseason. Maybe i'm just imagining it.

probably not so drastic, no time is a good time for these things, but if it is only a clean up, he will be back and pounding soft pavement within the month. His fitness base will allow him to be back 95% by Rd 1, and in some instances, player with 10 years under their belt actually benefit from the break so close to a season.

GodDAMMIT.

He's been training the house down, I was getting excited about seeing him with an uninterrupted preseason under his belt.

Bad news, but not the worst. Hopefully will be back to 100% by round 1. I think he battled with knee tendonitis most of last year? Didn't seem to affect him too much.

Expect BJ to step up his leadership of the team at training now.

i hope this knee problem doesnt keep niggling through out the season, Kosi gonna have to really step up in the forward line with Riewoldt out for the Nab

I'd be concerned if I was a Saints supporter.

He's done a lot of work over his career and it could be catching up.

He's turnign 27.. I think Dermie was shot at around that age.

Interesting times for the Saints as their golden boys in Kosi and Roo might be on their last legs.

I had the same thing done on the same day:)

Probably won't have the same impact as the "watch up the arse" story from Pulp Fiction, but something to tell the grandkids none the less....:D

I hope he is okay. timing is real bad.

Could be worse, he is not 19, doesnt need much more fitness, he is a superstar arguably the fittest guy in the comp, one of. Will start late probably round 2. Good news for saints we only have the crows as a potential loss in the first 4 rounds.

My worry is this will turn into round 10 as it always does for us.

:(
